Solomon Wilcots: "Mark Sanchez is a major liability for the Jets"

I like Wilcots on Sirius NFL as he holds no punches when he feels he has something to say.

On his NFL Sirius Radio slot today he discusses the AFC East and Points to the Patriots as the division winner with Buffalo getting 2nd with 9 or 10 wins and then Miami and the Jets in last place.

He says the Jets will not be any better than in last place because Mark Sanchez is overrated by all the hoopla concerning his debut this year and had not had enough time or production at USC to say he will be a good pro and thinks he will be a liability especially this year and laughs at the prognosticators that say Mark is this years Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco.

In other words, he says the Jets are fu(ked with Sanchez.

I agree with Wilcotts Sanchez isn't battle tested yet and even Pete Carroll publically said he should have stayed in school (I heard Sanchez's brother spin it that Carroll was just testing him to see if he was really mentally prepared to make the jump). Both Ryan and Flacco had a lot more starting experience.

Sanchez could become a good NFL QB, but he most likely isn't ready. I think taking him is a gamble and the Jets could look back at the last two drafts as the years they had back to back top 10 busts. He could be Carson Palmer or he can be Matt Leinhart. Unfortunately for the Jets, he has shown a few signs of Leinhart's love of off-field distractions (granted not nearly as bad). He has already done a GQ shoot and dating a model. Being in NY can provide plenty of other distractions.

I still think even if Sanche becomes a HOFQB, this year will be a struggle for him. He has a lot to learn and no receivers to support him.

On one hand, I agree. Pete Carroll said publicly that Sanchez isn't ready, and he only started one year at USC (where his production was good, but not great). OTOH, as college defenses become more complex and athletic, I think that the learning curve from the NCAA to NFL drops for QBs somewhat, allowing for some of the limited rookie success that we've seen the past few years. I think that having a rookie QB will certainly limit the offense in many ways, but I dunno if I'd call him a major liability when he's replacing a QB who threw 22 INTs last year. He'd be hard-pressed to be more of a liability than that.

I look forward to seeing this qb corps during Jest games. few things are more therapuetic and better for the soul than a struggling Jets team.

Does anyone remember how accurate Solomon was with his predictions last year? I don't seem to think he's anything special at predicting, but also not terrible.

in a somewhat related note, the Tyranosaur Rex Ryan named Gholston the starter on defense for the first quarter of the season. It's hard to be green in NY.

To predict that a rookie QB will flounder is a safer bet than Chad Johnson displaying his immense imaturity on a monthly basis.

Sanchez has impressed me so far though , in terms of intangibles - he appears to be a confident guy who is ready for the inevitable scrutiny that comes with being a sports star in New York.

Last years rookie QB sensations (Ryan and ,to a lesser extent, Flacco) both had strong running games (ranked 2 and 4) to help- carry the load.

On paper, despite contract disputes, the RB trio of Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Shonn Greene appears comparable.

Sanchez will also have a very nice pass catching TE prospect in Dustin Keller to throw to.

As much as we all hate to admit these things, I think the Jets made the right call trading up for this guy.

At USC, Sanchez was known for having a big head and not exactly exhibiting the best judgment off the field (he had to take a rape awareness course after certain allegations came up...), so I wouldn't necessarily say that he has intangibles nailed down or anything. The media's trying hard to sell that story, since if he comes through for the Jets he could be the face of the NFL in a few years, but his history doesn't exactly back it up.

That said, I'm not ready to swing in the other direction and call him a bust in the making, either- there's no denying that the guy's extremely talented, and even if he is an enormous jerk he's far from the only one in the league. I'm just saying that we should wait until he's actually played in the league before we evaluate his fit on or off the field.

Isn't it unfortunate that the one person who knows for sure who is and who is not an NFL bust is stuck working for a satellite radio station?

As far as I can tell know one knows anything about any of the rookies just yet - and indeed Sanchez could likely have a first season as bad as a guy named Aikman. I think things wound up working out pretty well for him.

I don't begrudge a guy for dating a model if he can get one, but the NFL and models, Playboy Playmates, and actresses don't usually mix. The only ones I know who have successfully done it are Brady and Jeff Garcia (at least for bigger stars). Heather Kozar single handily destroyed both Cade McNown and Tim Couch when she stepped out with McNown on Couch. Jessica Simpson has done wonders for Tony Romo's play on the field. Matt Leinhart lost his starting job because he was more interested in dating Paris Hilton and othe reality stars than spending time in the film room.

And yes, I am just jealous.

The Lions will need to make the most important draft selection in team history in April, and the front-runner for the pick appears to be Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford.

If they select Stafford, he'll become another player in the long line of Lions draft fiascos from this decade.

How can we be so sure? The answer has to do with the research first presented at FootballOutsiders.com by David Lewin; namely, that the only two stats that matter for a college quarterback are games started and completion percentage. For quarterbacks taken in the first two rounds, the numbers are inextricably linked to NFL success.

In his three seasons at Georgia, Stafford started 33 games and completed 57.1 percent of the passes he threw. That puts him in some pretty uninspiring company.

Yes, reigning rookie of the year Matt Ryan appears on that list, but with a bit of an asterisk. Ryan played for a Boston College team that had no running game and threw 654 passes in his final season, skewing his completion percentage some. Even if Ryan doesn't come with an asterisk, a one-in-five shot of picking a quarterback of Ryan's caliber shouldn't encourage Stafford's selection in the slightest.

One of the arguments against a statistical-based system for projecting college quarterbacks is that a system quarterback such as former Hawaii star Colt Brennan would put up inflated numbers that weren't true indicators of his NFL ability. Although scouts should sniff that stuff out and encourage teams to avoid taking such players in the first two rounds (something Lewin built into his system), another easy way to control for system quarterbacks is to compare the quarterback to the previous starter at his school.

Stafford was directly preceded at Georgia by the recently retired David Greene; both spent their entire college careers under head coach Mark Richt in similar offensive systems. Stafford's college numbers are actually worse than Greene's, with the latter completing 59 percent of his passes and averaging 8.01 yards per attempt to Stafford's 7.83. If Stafford was really a star in the making, wouldn't he have put up better numbers, in the same system, than a guy who washed out of the NFL without taking a professional snap? If it was our $25 million guaranteed, the answer would need to be yes.

Sanchez posted 16 starts and a Comp% of 64.3 for the Trojans.

The starts are a negative, but his outstanding Comp%, pedigree (USC), playing in a pro-style offense, and success at the highest level of NCAA competition, outweigh that one negative.

I hate the Jets with the burning heat of 10,000 suns, but IMO, the Jets made a shrewd selection, the Lions will be forever bad, and Wlicots doesn't know what he's talking about.

Anyone who brings up the argument that Sanchez had limited playing experience probably never heard of Matt Cassel. Sanchez actually has a good chance to not flop because the Jets will be relying on it's defense to win games. That said, they won't win any games where the opponent scores more then 14 points.

Cassel studied for years under TFB, had Belichick as a head coach, and threw to Welker and Moss.

While Sanchez can jump right in and be successful, he won't. He's the media darling of the moment who will be forgotten after he starts showing his true colors.

I disagree. If you're only going to play 16 games, it's better to play well in those games. Plus, Sanchez played at the highest level in college.

I never said he wasn't. Of course he is. But he's a lesser gamble than Stafford, who was worse than Greene in the same system. Moreover, Stafford came from a system that hasn't produced a successful NFL QB. Sanchez has.
