Personally I think it IS time for him to go to a team that can use him as a starter,He is simply way too talented to ride the pine his whole career - More than half the teams in the NFL with a less than modest DL would have him on the front line as a starter.

I still think Green could be a part of a deal before camp is up,maybe to get a player like Burgess in here.

Chris, it sounds like he just wants to go back to his home town. There is nothing wrong with that. Who knows? It's a long time between now and the end of the upcoming season. He might just change his mind.

That seems like a harmless comment to me.

seems like he is saying he is in his last year of a contract and that it would be nice to play in front of his hometown....I don't think this means he wouldn't negotiate with the Pats. Just that it would be fun to play in New Orleans.

More like he realizes how many free agents we have and that he likely will get more money elsewhere but not that he wouldn't be willing to return

I think the term, "it is wjhat it is" comes to mind here. Hey, he's been here a long time, and is on the downside of a pretty good career. Green is one of the good guys. Good teammate, a player who plays to his potential, and a better guy off the field than on it. If you remember he's taken the time to realize there is more to life than football. He's taken classes, done interships, etc to prepare himself after he's done.

Its only natural to think about going "home", and if he can get another year or two, and play for the Saints, god bless. But he's a smart guy and knows that his time with the Pats is done. His playing time will go down some with the emergence of some of the backups like Smith Wright, and now Brace, and his cap, while not high, won't justify keeping him on.

I hope he goes out in a blaze of glory

Interesting quote from a really good guy. I've got some calls in now to try and get to the bottom of it. As for my opinion? I agree with Patfranken. He's been around the league for awhile now -- he's going to be 31 in January -- and I think he's smart enough to see the writing on the wall. There are a bunch of contracts that are up at the end of the season, and he may not be a priority. If he wants to return home and get paid, then I say good for him.

The reality of things is that he probably has more value to another team other than the Patriots and they will pay him more. I don't know if Green would be a full time starter here even if Seymour leaves. I could see him starting on a number of 3-4 and 4-3 teams though.

With the number of free agents the Pats have to deal with after this year, the likelihood of Green returning is slim. I wouldn't be surprised if he was used as trade bait during camp if the Pats think they can pry away an OLB like Derrick Burgess. Not likely to happen since player for player trades aren't common this time of year, but I wouldn't be shocked.

He is 31 but I dont know if the end of the line is really as close as some say,I think he could have at least another productive 3 or 4 years in this league if given a chance on an every down situation.

I dont really care what his intentions are after this season is over. I just dont get the need to make a declaration prior to this season that this is his last in NE. The comment wasnt necessary, it served no purpose, it stands to possibly burn one very strong bridge, and it could only serve as a distraction. I feel the same way about a player's retirement. You retire when youre done. You dont talk about it before hand. You start talking about retirement, you may as well just hang 'em up. This is a strange statement to read. And having read it, I kindof hope Green was actually misquoted.

A team like New Orleans that seems to perenially be in need of a better defense to go with their already good offense would obviously be interested in Green. Both sides benefit from the local guy returning home angle, plus Green finally would get a chance to start. So a move to the Saints would make sense for both the team and the player.

On the other hand he could have simply been talking off-handedly, or simply referring to the fact this is the last year of his contract. If he does move on than I say thanks for the production and effort, and good luck. But it is certainly not a done deal yet, a lot of things could happen between now and March to change any current plans.

His cap hit for 09 is a manageable $2.5m so a cut is unlikely unless he is just done. I suppose he could be traded for a OLB who can make an impact. I like Jarvis. I dont expect him to be a pain in the locker room over this. He was hurt for the most part of 08 which cut into his normal production and maybe there are some lingering complications which has him down.

I'd like to cut him some slack and think that he has a good rebound year ahead of him. Maybe he is depressed over the thought of two-a-days....

Hopefully you find some clarification for us, at the moment it's just another 'sad' in our Patriots saga.

You are being too kind, Chris. Where there is smoke, there is fire. He and his agent are hacked off with the Pats as Jarvis does not have a long-term deal. In frustration, #97 cries on the shoulder of a hometown scribe. This oozes Pedro talking to a reporter from the D.R. under the mango tree.

With that, in order to avoid losing any kind of leverage with not only the Pats, but with potentially other teams, the wonder agent follows the spin control playbook step-by-step. in addition, the last thing he wants is for his client to be cut or traded to a crappy situation.

I don't think Jarvis is trying to shoot his way out of town by any means, but I do think he let his true feelings known- and that can't be misconstrued.

Does NO have any decent pass-rushing LBs? How old is Pat Swilling?

I think Pissah means when it says "he wants to end his career as a Patriot" that it could mean he wants to leave the organization and not retire as of yet but go to another team like the Saints for example.

I certainly hope this team does not get stubborn and let Seymour,Wilfork and Green walk or this team gets mediocre on defense really fast in 2010
