Coaching & scouting nuggets
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

A few nuggets on the Patriots' scouting and coaching staff that were previously unaccounted for:

Brian Ferentz, who joined the team as a scouting assistant in 2008, will serve as a coaching assistant in 2009. This is a common transition for young scouts/coaches in the Patriots' system, as Bill Belichick works to create linkage between the elements of scouting and coaching. Coaching assistants are sometimes promoted to position coaches in future years.

Bob Quinn, who served as a national scout in 2008, is now the assistant director of pro personnel.

Patrick Stewart, who served as a scouting assistant in 2008, is now an area scout.

James Liipfert has joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant.

Ferentz is the son of Kirk and was with the Saints and the Falcons after he finished up at Iowa.

Here is a good story on Liipfert:

Looks like the Ferentzes owe a lot to Belichick. Kirk Ferentz was his OL coach with the Browns, as well.

Reiss' report and your links make this site worth visiting. Liipfert is buddies with 2 young Pats but can't socialize 'cause he's administration. :)

Excellent story -- Liipfert is clearly bursting with energy and ambition. Let's hope he's smart too!

Bill (along with Ernie and Mr. Kraft) has the market cornered on finding smart people, I don't think we have to hope - I think we know.

Matt Walsh says "Hi!" ;)

Thanks for the thread PATS1 and especially thanks for the links. The first article is very well done and a good read. Its is funny, I just read the article by Czarnecki (different thread) and had to comment at FOX about what a waste of space it is then I read this article which is well writing and detailed. There are good reporters out there still!

Indeed -- but not a good hire by any standards ...

True, but Bill Belichick was the defensive coordinator of the New Jersey Jets when he was hired by the Patriots. Don't blame BB and Ernie for the pick.

Good point. OK -- it's Mr Kraft who isn't perfect. Now who hired Tom Casale? :)

Wasn't he already here?

He was hired as a scouting assistant in 1998 and moved on to be an assistant to Video Director Jimmy Dee in 1999- so he was here before BB took over.
