7. Does Tom Brady's return mean the Patriots win and win big?

Well, the Patriots figure to nurse Brady into playing shape this summer, but Bill Belichick has bigger concerns. Can Laurence Maroney prove he's durable enough to hold off ex-Jaguar Fred Taylor at running back? Maroney has been full of excuses the last couple of seasons, but his shoulder should finally be healthy. And what happens if LB Tedy Bruschi retires or simply slows down? Yes, Jerod Mayo is very good, but Bruschi knows the system. The bottom line is that New England's defense, particularly the secondary, is in full transition.

Czar's Prediction: The Patriots barely win the AFC East and Brady falls well short of 50 touchdown passes.

Don't really follow this writer, but what jumps out at you there that is moronic? Maroney will be in a battle with Taylor, the secondary is in a complete transition (three new starters from last year) and Brady will be nursed back slowly, he had a major knee operation in case you missed the memo.............

What jumped out at me as stupid is :

Unless you have Maroney on your fantasy team it doesn't matter whether he can beat out Taylor or not. As long as we go into the season with a strong running game, I don't care if it's from Maroney, Taylor or both (in addition to Morris and Faulk).

Mayo doesn't have the experience of Bru, obviously, but I think we'll see him "knowing the system" just fine to run it 100% should it be necessary.

The secondary is in full transition - to anyone who watched them play last season, this is a GOOD thing.

His delivery and how he phrases his points are sophmoric at best. I kind of wish he wrote the article like this:

A. Based on his injury history, yes. He has a tremendous amount of talent but to protect themselves from potential depth-issues, the Pats were wise to add Taylor to the RB group.

Although it will be a challenge to duplicate his 2007 season, with the skill players such as Welker, Moss, Galloway, Faulk and the additions to the TE position and RB, coupled with a veteran OL and talented rookies such as Vollmer added to the group, the 2009 Patriot's offense will still be amongst the league's best.

Q. Should Patriot fans be concerned about Bruschi's production at age 35?
A. Yes. Although with Gary Guyton, who had a promising rookie year at ILB and which more is expected from him in 2009, it is assumed that Belichick, as it has been proven with older LBs (see McGinest, Pfeiffer, Seau), he will utilize him and put him in situations that will maximize his effectiveness.

Q. With the many new players in the secondary, should fans be concerned?
A. Not really. Bodden and Springs are new to the team, but have experience in this type of defense with other clubs. Willhite and Wheatley are in their second year with the Pats and should contribute more than the previous season. Butler and Chung are outstanding CB and safety prospects respectively and will gradually be eased into the program as the year unfolds. With Merriweather, Sanders and Tank Williams, this group is experienced, talented and should be very productive.

I love how he predicts Brady falling well short of 50 TD passes as if he's going out on anything even resembling a limb by saying that. That's only happened one time in history, so I'm going to really stick my neck out and offer up that that's a pretty safe bet.

This wasn't meant to be a clinical diagnosis, Czarnicki's past articles have heavily prejudiced him for me, this item did nothing to encourage me to reassess him.

In that regards calling someone moronic for not seeing eye to eye with you without either of you knowing the future is well.....moronic itself in a way.

In fact by the quote of his column that you added he is right - Maroney's excuses should end now that he is healthy (for now,anyway - Once he gets banged around we will see if those bones can take it)

The fact that Tedy is slowing down is something we all recognize and there is even a thread on that today on this main forum.

And I don't know what you find moronic about the defense in full transition - It has a practically new secondary with only 2 players left from 08 if I am not mistaken and we have little in pass rush right now unless Crabel or Tully steps up to help Thomas.

The defense beyond the front 3 is definately the concern of this team and I can't for the life of me see anything 'moronic' in that paragraph.

Anyone who thinks Brady will come near 50 passes is really hoping for a duplication of 2007 - This is a different team and what should be by far a more talented running attack with Taylor on board and the ball should be run MUCH more often than in 07,especially by the assumption that BB will take the ease off of Brady early in the season if possible by running the ball.

Having read a number of Czarnicki articles over the past few seasons, I'm quite comfortable with my characterization of him, defend him if you must, but his sometimes keen grasp of the obvious and more than occasional flights of idiocy place him low on the read list. I should have left him for you to post, but with Toothless and maverick4 dominating the forum I was looking for anything with a mild NEP angle.

As a subset of the fourth group, I'd identify them as being the type whose opinions are about as informed and supported as something that you'd expect to find on this (or another) message board from a generic poster in the first place. Blogs like this have no real power as persuasive arguments here, since they're really no more or less credible than any other post.
