One interesting question that I think Reiss was mixed up on...

[Comment From jrpelotte]
Mike, with all these draft picks being signed you have to think that vince Wilfork is wondering when he gets his deal. Have you heard any thing?

Mike Reiss:

Doesn't sound to me, from the people I've spoken with, that there has been much progress there at this point for a long-term deal.

Sounds like hes trying to say hasnt been much progress for a long term deal..

i was wondering about that today myself. Since these are all at most 2nd rnd picks its not going to be nearly as expensive singing them, and after they were all singned would Wilfork be next.

Hopefully he wasnt mixed up and really meant what he said that they are making progress.

When i first read it thats what i thought he was saying.... that thy were making progress. This one i don't get, Pro Bowl NT's are hard to find so why treat Wilfork poorly when he wants to play here and would take a fair deal.

I don't see any reason why they'd go out of their way to sign Wilfork now - there's too many unknowns w the CBA. They can franchise him or Seymour next year if they have to. I'm comfortable with both those guys reaching free agency, and our ability to re-sign them next year.

It reads to me that there HASN'T been much progress. As long as Vince isn't planning on holding out that's not much of an issue. We can re-consider next year, the CBA may be clearer, what we have in Brace will be clearer.

Miguel lists the remaining cap at $5M, unless they start to do major restructuring there is no way the can sign Wilfork (or anyone else).

Next year Seymour & Wilfork all hit free agency, one will be franchised, one will likely be gone. That is the way the cookie crumbles.

Miguel's UNOFFICIAL 2009 Patriots Salary Cap Information Page

Last updated on July 11, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

The following figures include the cap impact of the Darius Butler signing and my guesstimates at the cap impact of the Rich Ohrnberger, Nathan Hodel, Al Johnson, Wesley Britt, Russ Hochstein, Chris Hanson, and Terrence Nunn. According to my figures the Patriots' 2009 cap figure is $124,776,058 with 76 signed players and 10 tendered players. The 2009 salary cap is $127,997,000. The Patriots' 2009 adjusted cap is $129,831,466. I like to thank Adamjt13 for providing the information about the Patriots' adjusted cap number. So I have the Pats under their adjusted cap by about $5.055 million. Profootballalltalk.com reported on 5/15 that the Pats were under their adjusted cap by about $5.1 million before the cap was increased by $947,000 so my numbers were off by about $356,000 at that time. That is, the Pats are under their adjusted cap by about $5.4 million.
DISCLAIMERS - My numbers are a snapshot in time. Things will change between the as of date and a future date.

Best case scenario is Brace can play. I'll be Pangloss here.

What do you see happening with Vince Wilfork situation? Can we sign him long-term or is Ron Brace the long term option?
12:40 Mike Reiss: I don't see Wilfork and the Patriots reaching a long-term agreement. I think there will be a short-term incentive to placate Wilfork -- either a bump in salary or an agreement not to franchise him next year if certain parameters are met -- and Wilfork will be play 2009 with some extra motivation to set himself up for a big payday in 2010.

reiss thinks if the pats don't sign him this offseason, he won't be back the following year..

Wilfork is a good player.. But he's not the best NT in the Division.> That honor goes to Jenkins.. Lets see what Brace has..

Interesting. I had no idea Vince needed "placating". Granted I was away so maybe I missed something but the last I knew about a month or so ago Vince stated he was prepared to play and that he'd put any contract thoughts behind him for now. That and he very much wants to stay with the Patriots-he Loves it here. So unless something's happened since then I don't get why Mike has that impression about Vince:confused:

At that time Mike ran a "Vince's Contract" column along these same lines and I remember some of us questioned it even then.

Unless there's been recent negative news out of Vince's camp, I'm not going to worry about it this year.

The Wilfork situation, I'm afraid, is looking more and more like the Samuel situation. Vince will report, he will play hard with assurances there'll be no frachise tag, and he'll move on for boatloads of cash.

Jenkins ha, the same guy who wore down lil over half way through the season playing the position. Sometimes I hope he leaves just so fans can realize how important he is to the D.

What me worry, NE is lining up both Vince and Seymour for 2010 deals (amen).

Vince doesn't sound like he's going to bring drama to the situation though. We'll see what happens down the road but I just don't see the constant hype over it at this point. Vince intends to play this year and it's a little early to start attaching some deeper meaning to the fact contract talks haven't progressed lately. It's mid-July and Vince isn't making any threatening noises so jmho but it's too early to call.

Totally agree... he has already said he is a man of his word and would live up to the signed contract. There won't be a "get paid" style interview in the winter. It just seems as though he won't be the Brady (I'll take less to get the team some leverage to build around me) type.

The Patriots are going to drag this out until after the season.

If Ron Brace can play and Belichick feels he can be an adequate replacement for Wilfolk, then Wilfolk will be allowed to move on to another team.

If not, they can always slap that franchise tag on him and go from there.

There is absolutely no hurry to do the Wilfolk deal. The Patriots selecting a NT in the 2nd round ought to tell you what the front office thinks about extending Wilfork.....it's gonna be a wait-and-see and watching if Brace can take over the position as a starter in 2010 if Wilfolk leaves.

You don't select a player in the 2nd round to be a backup throughout his contract, as Brace would be if Wilfolk stays. Eventually I think all teams envision second rounders to eventually start somewhere down the road.

I think Seymour and Jarvin Green gets extended after the season, and Wilfolk leaves.

Unfortunately Jenkins wore down because of the amt of snaps he was playing, little rotation.. But against the run, he's the closest there comes to Mount Washington (that being TED)

Wilfork is a good player but he's not a franchise player like Seymour..

Reiss has a different opinion... he seems to feel that the tactics you describe are in bad faith and that the Pats would prefer giving Wilfork a garantee he won't be franchised to entice him to come to camp on time and see what happens. Having said that, Vince has already stated, in the media, that he'd be there and would honor the last year of his original deal.

Who's Jarvin Green...

I don't think they were looking for a backup so much as someone with starting potential to rotate and play some different fronts as well as represent replacement insurance should they hit a wall with Wilfork.

If Seymour gets extended after the season, then the tag will be Wilforks, whether it's to buy time or trade him.

If all he's looking for is a fair deal they will extend him. If not, they'll move him. The problem is often semantics...defining a fair deal. Warren took the early bird discount with a couple of years left on his rookie deal. I'd be amazed if Vince wasn't offered a similar option. If he was and turned it down, then you can see where they would get caught up in semantics.

Which is just another example of why I question Mike's opinions. Why would you have to offer someone something of tremendous potential value to do something they said they intended to do and in fact have already done, report for mandatory workouts. It's one thing to offer a tagged player his freedom in exchange for reporting. Last time a player who was not yet eligible to be tagged asked them to agree not to, they just went ahead and traded him pre-emptively (Branch). Entering that kind of agreement with a player still under his rookie contract would set a horrible precedent.

You bring up good points - there doesn't seem to be a reason to "throw him a bone" since he's already said he has no hard feelings, plans to play hard for NE this season, and see what happens... it's just that Reiss has stated that same opinion so many times in his chats or in his mailbag...

Either way, I think it'll be hard to keep Wilfork long-term, because I don't know if what HE sees as fair is in the same range as what the TEAM sees as fair.
