New England Patriots 2009 Preview | NFL Touchdown
New England Patriots ‘09 Preview
June 29, 2009 by Andy Benoit

Maybe Bill Belichick’s legions of critics were prophetic. Maybe his New England Patriots did wind up pissing off the football gods. During New England’s historic 2007 season, most of the non-Patriots fans who were not irate about Spygate were eventually turned off by what they perceived to be the head coach’s hubris.

Nice synopsis......

Re: New England Patriots ‘09 Preview

Hi Box. Thanks for the preview.

Would it hurt your feelings if I said that guy is one of the worst writers I've ever read?

Could be he needed to use colorful terms like Football Gawds another ten or twenty times. I never thought Seymour and Warren were very vociferous. I'd say they are both rather laconic, even taciturn.

But it's good to know Gary Guyton is ready to step in at outside linebacker if Woods struggles. I thought he was being worked at inside linebacker, but what do I know?

Glad Mayo's already the best ILB in the league, when did that happen?

Your Truly....

Re: New England Patriots ‘09 Preview

Kids been writing crap since he's been in the 4th grade ... with the help of his mother. supposedly never went to an NFL game until college which he might have graduated by now. Probably a Jet's fan.

Re: New England Patriots ‘09 Preview

It was a nice preview to read but I disagree with a couple of his points.

New England’s 2007 first-round pick, Brandon Meriweather, will work at strong safety.

I seriously hope the Pats don't play him at SS because he is clearly better as a FS. I want to see Merriweather playing "center field" where he excels, not trying to be a "in the box" safety which he isn't. Sanders and Merriweather should flip positions.

And if Pierre Woods, Vrabel’s replacement, should struggle, New England has a very talented alternate in second-year pro Gary Guyton.

Because of injuries, they tried to put Guyton at OLB last year and he got manhandled. Unless Guyton steps up his game, he's better as a ILB. Shawn Crable is the next in line to replace Woods if he struggles. In fact, I'm sure we will see Crable in a lot of pass rushing situations this season.

At cornerback, the tentative plan is to start Jonathan Wilhite opposite newcomer Leigh Bodden.

I highly doubt they want Wilhite to start at CB, that role would belong to Springs. In fact, the Pats aren't paying Springs just to be a motivational coach for the young guys. The most likely scenerio, Wheatley, Wilhite and Butler will be battling for the "slot" CB position unless they're ahead of schedule and beat out Springs or Bodden.

What’s more, playing behind this line is second-year star Jerod Mayo, already the league’s best inside linebacker.
While Mayo is on the right track, he's not the best ILB in the game. I think that award belongs to Patrick Willis.

Heybrowhatup, you're right. I agree that that is what they drafted Chung for and this guy barely mentions his name. The guy was our top pick aferall.
That wasnt a typo. im alitte dwunk.

Yeah I don't understand why they had Sanders playing FS and Merriweather playing SS. Sanders biggest weakness is speed/tackling in the open field and Brandon's biggest weakness is run stuffing.

You hit the nail on everything else. But don't forget about TBC (even if you may like too). For what he lacks in the run game he makes up for in the passing game. He is fairly quick and I could see him in on passing downs early if Crable isn't ready or hurt.

I definitely agree with your analysis of their relative strengths and weaknesses, but all in all it seems pretty clear that the Pats are going for more versatile safeties who can perform either role as needed. When they do need more free/strong distinction, Meriweather will probably move more into the 'free' role once Chung steps into the starting lineup, whenever that happens.

Agreed, although an offseason of NFL conditioning can do a lot for a guy's strength. Whether he's at ILB or OLB (and I agree that he's sticking at ILB), Guyton will need to be more stout against the run if he wants to become more of an every-down presence.

I highly doubt they want Wilhite to start at CB, that role would belong to Springs. In fact, the Pats aren't paying Springs just to be a motivational coach for the young guys. IMO, Wilhite's going to be more in the slot CB role either way, since that fits his skillset better. In the modern NFL, you realistically need 3 starter-caliber CBs, and if you can have someone who matches up with guys that are split out wide, and others who match up against slot guys, you're in good shape. If the slot CB is the traditional #3, then I'd guess that makes Wilhite the #3. Wheatley seems like more of the classic #2 CB.

Do a shot anytime someone on Patsfans mentions Pierre Woods or our lack of a pass rush.

Meriweather at Free Safety - good grief: When has anyone here seen him at Free Safety for more than a handful of plays? Prior to Rodney going down, Meriweather worked at CB and Dime/Nickel Safety with a few reps at either Safety position to rest Rodney or James.

After Rodney went down Meriweather was the primary Strong Safety, the result: nine passes defensed, four interceptions, two forced fumbles, two sacks.

Yes, he's lighter than Rodney and he doesn't pack the punch Rodney did when he tackles, but by playing closer to the LOS he's better set to disrupt plays. Can he play centerfield? Sure, he can stay deep and provide help over top for the CBs, but he's a big play man like Asante, which means you want him in the short to intermediate areas where most of the plays occur. Maybe when Chung is up to speed we'll see him working low and Meriweather working high, but as of the end of the 2008 season, the best place for Meriweather was down where the action was, and Sanders staying deep kept the Pats best Secondary Field General back where he could direct the action.

If you look at Meriweather's Combine numbers compared to Samuels', you'll see they were very close. If you'll think back to Meriweather's first season, he took a significant number of his reps at CB for Asante. I believe BB wanted him to take over Asante's playmaker role at CB, but he just wasn't able to play CB as well. Safety was his fallback position and he's in Rodney's shoes because he's a big play kid - Asante's stats his second year when he took over as starter showed fewer big plays, so think what Brandon might do as he gets more experience.

You folks who want Meriweather playing centerfield need to wake up and smell the field turf because Brandon is one heck of a short stop, don't mess with what's working.
----------
Gary Guyton: Yep, he took injury reps at OLB and struggled with technique before NE lost him to injury and had to bring back the retreads. I expect Guyton to crosstrain at OLB because that's how BB builds depth, but he's in the running for starter ahead of Bruschi at ILB. We'll see how much a year in the system and a full offseason program did for Gary and Jarod, both needed to get stronger and get better with their hands, but given BB and Tedy's offseason remarks, I think those two are going to be a dynamic duo inside. Let's not forget the OLB idea though, Woods and TBC are the two developed at OLB in the system, both needed more than one year to pick things up, Gary could still work out okay there and be solid as an emergency option.
----------
Wilhite was the starter at the end of the 2008 season, I'd expect him to start Training Camp working first string, after that we'll see. I expect Springs to be more of a nickel (outside) to keep him fresh for the entire season and postseason run. Wilhite and Wheatley and Bodden look to be the guys battling for the "starter" tag. I don't expect Butler to see a lot of time before mid-season - the same as BB & Co. handled Gay, Hobbs, and the two W's from last season. At this point, I'd say the secondary depth is quite comforting heading into this Training Camp.

Re: New England Patriots ‘09 Preview

I'm not sure what insights the author has into the Patriots but I've never quite viewed Floyd Reiss as replacing Pioli... he's more of a rental in my eyes - a good football guy who can help provide important insight and help take some responsibilities off Belichick's plate

Aside from that this article really illustrates the depth on the offense that will work itself out - I wouldn't pen anyone into the starting TE job just yet - they'll all have to fight for it

Same with the DBs - who wins the jobs as starters? Who knows but we've got enough qualities bodies to fight it out and give us a good shot at having a quality secondary.

The defensive line and LBs are solid as always - and others in the league may indeed begin to look at Mayo as the best ILB in the game.

Re: New England Patriots ‘09 Preview

I think 19-0 is not impossible this season and I will believe in it until they suffer a loss, I think the only teams that could take us down are New Orleans and maybe Houston in a trap game...

If we make a run again though, I don't know if my heart can handle the disappointment twice...
