The Top Five: Best 3-4 Defensive Ends in the NFL

I notice that Seymour, in particular, gets a lot of flak on this board. I guess his production isn't up to the standards of some of you guys. But reading this gave me an idea of how to better approach the situation: if Seymour isn't good enough, then who's better? Who would those of you that don't like him rather have at DE?

I would'nt say I dont like him but he is not the same player he was before the big contract in 2005 and his injury history is part of that consideration although he did step it up last season.

Signing a player like Julius Peppers or Mario Williams or either Williams DL on the Vikings would certainly help me get over Big Sey if he goes elsewhere next year for bigger $$$

The flak Seymour gets is downright insane. He is in my mind, without question, the best player on the defense. AD might be the most important due to versatility, but Seymour is, flat-out, the best player on D.

Any even cursory glance at either tape or metrics shows that Seymour is a friggin beast. While I'm not always huge on KC Joyner, he did come out recently and say the metrics & tape say Seymour is better against the run then anyone else on that line (including Wilfork) and I agree completely.

Just to back that up...When opponents were running behind left tackle (at Seymour), the Pats had the 2nd best run D in the league. When opponents were running behind center/guards (at Wilfork), the Pats had the 15th best run D in the league. Yes, granted, many other factors & variables are involved, and the huge drop-off may also be an indictment of the ILBs behind big Vince.

And if you've paid attention, anytime Seymour has been injured in the past several years, the run metrics towards his side become dramatically worse.

Not to mention, aside from AD, he is our best pass rusher - and he provides interior pass rush, making him that much more valuable.

Would you want them to play DE or OLB?

And what did he do in 2004 that he didn't do in 2008?

Agree completely. I'll go a step further, even, and say that after Brady, he's the most important player on the team, IMO.

Wow, two of our starters made the top 5. That's pretty awesome and incredible.

Definitely, and at the end of the day it's just Belichick's defensive philosophy in action. It's all predicated on controlling gaps, so you have to build your defense from the inside out.

That's why Belichick does crazy things that get clueless fans and writers in an uproar, such as drafting Ron Brace over Everette Brown (who would be either a one-dimensional LB or an undersized 3-4 DE that would have been destroyed at the LOS).

Leads to absolutely priceless quotes like this one:

“On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sack last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

I think Seymour is a valuable part of our D, and if he goes, he will be missed.

But I also think Warren is underrated at times.

I have never understood the hate and dissrespect for Seymour. In this defense hes asked to hold the line first and rush second which he has done very well except when he was injured a couple of years ago and required surgery.

Couldn't agree with you any more, and I can only hope we end up keeping him. Any player who has 3 SB rings, and has gone to the pro bowl what(?) 5 times has to be incredibly dominating and his position.

Not only can he do so many things for our D such as block kicks, demand 2 players, be the strong side of the run D, and rush the passer interiorly--he can play all 3 downs, and all 3 positions on the line.

If he isn't our best dfensive player, and the best 3-4 DE in the league, then I'd surely like to know who is!!

Warren being 100% could have a huge impact on the D this year. He played well last year, but was clearly slowed by the injury, and not a force like he can be.

I'd agree with that. AD is up there due to versatility but beyond that, Big Sey and Brady are the cornerstones.

I'd rather have a DE who didn't step on the face of offensive lineman.

Got a smaller paycheck?????

So is the argument that he was never worth what he's being paid or that he was worth it but isn't as good as he used to be anymore? Both arguments are wrong, but let's at least clarify where it's coming from.

Lets not forget about Jarvis Green, not only is he a very solid backup, but he could get to the qb on passing situations.

As for seymour, not only is he the best 34 end in the game, but also one of the best dlinemen in the nfl. Lets hope we get to keep either him or vince, id be bummed if we lose both.

Green hasn't been much of a factor the last year, unfortunately. Its what led some people (myself included) to think that he could be cut or traded this year because of his extremely high salary cap hit for a reserve player.

Not my argument.
I'm saying the perception of Seymour changed when he signed a bigger contract.
The question was what did he do in 2004 that he didn't do in 2008, and my answer is nothing, and those saying he isn't the player he was are holding a grudge against him for wanting a fair contract.
I was being a smart @ss.

I would agree, and it also seems like he moved behind Mike Wright last year on the depth chart. Even LeKevin Smith seemed to be taking snaps away from him.
At this point Green seems much, much less than the #3 DE 'almost starter' that he appeared to be a few years ago, and I'm surprised by it.

Sorry about that, then, my bad. Didn't read it as sarcastic, misinterpreted, etc. etc.
