This shows that Belichick has really dropped the ball in drafting LBers over the last four or five years.

The point has been made on this board before that Pittsburgh seems to be able to draft quality LBers in abundance over the years. http://www.patsfans.com/new-england...out-com-public-article-page2.html#post1416079

I agree with Hey Bro.

Our LBer corps the last two or three years have been slow. Woods isn't the answer. He's. Not. The. Answer.

He's a STer who can sub. I can't be fair to him, though, since his execrable attempt to hold onto a fumble recovery on a miserable SB vs. the Giants. How he gave it up to a tiny RB who wasn't even drafted seems to me to indicate he doesn't have that toughness and grit I'm looking for.

Thomas-Mayo-Guyton-Crable. Now that sounds more like it. I like Crable. You should too.

Woods has a daughter named Paris. Wonder if he ribs teammate Paris on that.

Totally agree.
I know there are some posters who like this guy.
I'm not one of them. It's not just the SB fumble recovery that wasn't, either.
I have never seen or heard of this guy making a big play for us.
If he has, then I missed it.
Don't know why BB keeps him around.
I'm sure that with all the training he's had in the system
that BB doesn't want to let him go and thinks he will pan out some day.
I hope we're proven wrong because he probably will get the starting nod
over Crable this season.

This means that the team won't have 11 Pro Bowlers on defense! That's never happened before in the history of the world. Whatever will we do?

Count me in with the "Not sold on Woods" crowd.
I hope I am proven wrong.
Seeing what Crable has to offer is certainly one of my biggest intrests this pre-season.

:D:D So, based on 1 muffed fumble recovery, you feel he's not qualified to start? That's how I felt when Tom Brady threw his first interception:D:D

Are you also in the "Not sold on Crable" crowd? I'm not picking on you specifically, but I think that realistically, at least to start the season, Woods has a better chance of producing than Crable.

I understand that Crable may have a higher upside but he hasn't played in any regular season games...

"State", what up bro? Thanks for the love. It's pretty rare when someone agrees with me. However, just get ready because most people on this board will come after you like they already have come after me.

I couldn't agree more with who you think should start. If Guyton and Crable show they can start, they should start. Woods and Bruschi as starters makes this group slower and liabilities in the passing game.

I dont think woods is the secong coming of willie Mcginest but geez like deus put it we dont need 11 pro bowlers we need players to play well within the system and play off of each other.

If he can be a "Do your job" guy Im happy with that because we have bonified playmakers in the LB corps in AD and Mayo and hopefully a healthy crable on passing downs

I think state amongst others are doing their best stan van gundy impression right now

I think this "look at what a good job Pittsburgh does drafting linebackers" theory is starting to get blown out of proportion. This decade the Steelers have drafted ten linebackers, including six in the first four rounds. I would certainly hope and expect that any team that uses so many draft picks on one position (or four positions, depending on your point of view) end up with a few good players from that group.

Wow, a panicky thread on Linebackers, who'd a thunk it? :yeeha:

Someone could argue there is a worse starter on the D than Woods, but it would be a tough battle. One way to look at it is someone has to be the worst, and it's Woods.

Look on the bright side -- the Steelers worst player on offense was their left tackle, and yet they still were able to win the SB.

Hopefully the Pats can overcome Woods lack of ability. (Or preferably, someone else steps up -- because I agree he has yet to show starter ability.)

That was a fumble recovery. If you recover the ball on the ground, and no one is around you, you have possession. As soon as the defender touched him, he was down. Bad call by the refs.

And even worse NO CHALLENGE by Belichick, one of many mistakes BB made that game.

Obvious statement of the century : Woods isn't LT. SBs have, however, been won without LT.

Who *would* be sold on Woods? There's nothing to be particularly sold on at this point. When he started last year, he was capable. Not great, not irreplaceable, not even necessarily good, but he didn't make the team worse by being out on the field. If that's the worst-case scenario for opening-day OLB, which it seems to be, then I can live with it. Maybe Crable will supplant him soon. Maybe not. Either way, the extent to which people are freaking out and harping on this is kinda stupid.

better than Eric Alexander?

The is one dumb thread as the DPY was harrison a UDFA like woods someone who got kept getting cut and was a fringe player .woods was never a fringe player. Yet harrison took a few years to move from DE to OLB........

I am sure you knew he was great when he was being cut and was 25 ?.

Woods and Wright did a good job in the 3 games he played. when thomas was swapped from ILB and OLB he played behind seymour. raven ran just right at him.Look at the game woods started ,him and wright held up better than expected. Warren is a upgrade over Wright so woods is going to better this year.

Guyton!!! He is a good 3rd down player. He has the speed and lanky presence to be in on 3rd downs.I have no clue why you want to beat him up against gaurds and pulling tackles and put him IR.

Crabel - This guy could not even make the active roster till he got IRed.Yet you feel he is better than woods ?. I have to see him perform against 1st team offence before i believe.the guys he played against are in walmart now.

The steelers have drafted 10 LB and 4 in the first round ...btw and yet the LB that is DPY is a UDFA fringe player for years and did not start contributing after 26-27

The problem is that the facts have been pointed out to these people time and again. They either don't care or they aren't capable of processing the ramifications of those facts.

As I posted in another thread that ended up being about this topic:

Prior to 2007, the Steelers had take an linebacker in the 5th round in 2005, the 2nd round in 2003 and the 4th round in 2002. That's it. It's not exactly an amazing sign of devotion.
