What's the best case scenario for Kevin O'Connell?

TFB says he wants to play for another decade or so. Conversely, I'm sure O'Connell's had a dream or two where #12 retires, and BB trusts the team to him right away. Conversely, while I'm sure we wouldn't mind if Brady played every snap for the O this year, it would also put the Patriots back in the situation of relying on a backup with little to no NFL game experience.

So, here's my question: in your opinion, what would be the best case scenario for all involved—the Patriots as a team, for #12, and for O'Connell?

I would imagine that his best case scenario would be either to settle in as a long term backup here (ala Damon Huard).........or show something to other teams (as in Cassel's "luck" in getting to show his stuff last year......that would provide him the chance to be a starter. For, as long as Brady is healthy................He WILL be starting here.......so Okee will either be our backup........or be on the trading block at some point...IMHO

I'm only going to look at this year and hope he does not play at all.
The exception of course would be if the Patriots blow a couple of teams out and he gets to play some clock killing garbage time.

I have high hopes for KO'C............

Best case scenario is he solidifies his back-up status to TB in training camp, something happens to TB this season or next and he shines as a big, strong and fast QB, elevating his value ala Matt Cassel. In the end, I think he's a better QB than Matt Cassel, but that's just my opinion at this point. Obviously Matt gets a fair shot in KC to really prove his worth beyond argument.

I don't like to think about worst case scenarios.

I am not secretly hoping TB gets hurt again, but the NFL is a tough place, injuries unfortunately are not uncommon. I'm glad we have KO'C on our team!

Best case for Pats is O'Connell sits in the real games but plays well enough in the next couple preseasons that he develops trade value ala Matt Hasselbeck.

From KO's view point, you are right or something close to it that gets him
lots of exposure and he does very well.
Actually it may be better if it happens in the last year of his contract.

What's best for the PATs is another question. I think PATs would be happy
knowing they have a very capable QB to step in if needed. I don't think
they will let KO go unless they were offered a lot. Especially not knowing
the long term condition of Tom. In fact they may have long term plans for KO.

Right now he's working with the best QB in the NFL and that can only be good for both parties, Kevin and NE. If he learns from Brady and develops in whatever game time he can get, he presents depth at the QB position or in the future possible trade value.

Here is what I was thinking as well... even though my opinion of Favre has fallen to ridiculous level, I still admire the way they did things in GB : sell off their backups as reliable would-be-starters (and some of them were).

Right now KOC is merely the flavor of the month backup QB binky. This time last year it was Matt Gutierrez... If he throws a couple of picks in preseason (or god forbid a pick off the bench cold in mopup duty...) most of the kneejerks here will overreact and jump off the future of the franchise bandwagon faster than they turtled on Matt Cassel...

I know, KOC was drafted in the third. About two dozen slots above the immortal Rohan Davey. That said, if he has real talent he will be long gone by 2012 because they all want to be a starter. So the best case for him is we win the next 2 Superbowls, he gets increasing time in preseason, Bill lauds him for running the best scout team in the league, Bill O'Brien gets tapped as the next branch of the BB HC tree in 2011 (or Nick Caserio gets tapped as the next branch of the BB GM tree) and lands with a franchise absent a starting QB and replete with draft picks.

That and Stafford and Sanchez flounder and that poor kid Tampa tapped disappears into the field turf...as the majority of overhyped first round QB's do, while Cassel establishes himself as the real deal long term.

Oh, yeah. And Favre finally retires.

There you go...that's the right answer. TB's successor is still in elementary school because TB isn't going to retire until he conquers a few more records, like 4 in a row, etc.

Yep, this is what I was thinking. Best case for KOC is that Cassel does real well and that he (KOC) looks good when he does appear in games.

I am hoping that Brady will be pulled this year in the fourth qtr if the Pats have a commanding lead, especially in the early games.
