I was watching the replay last night on NFLN. There were 7 seconds left when Vinatieri kicked the ball and after he makes it, the place explodes, Pats run onto the field, etc. My question is: when, exactly, does play end on a field goal attempt? I've always assumed it's supposed to end when refs confirm good or bad and blow the whistle. I believe this has been questioned before, but I wonder if there might've been a second or two left on the clock after that kick was made. If so, the Patriots would've been required to kick off giving the Rams a final chance to handle the ball. Did the league ever address this? Or, was the full 7 seconds really used on that play?

The Rams complained, and rightfully so, and the league did address it. Now, no more than four seconds can come off the clock from the time the ball is snapped and the attempt is either deemed good or no good.

What did the league say? I tried finding something on the web and no luck so far.

I don't know what, if anything, was said in the form of an official statement. However, that is the rule that was instituted after that situation occurred.

I still clearly remember - being the eternal pessimist Pats fan at that time - watching that FG go through the uprights and thinking "OK it's not over, we still have to kick off to the Rams and they have playmakers".

Not until I saw :00 on the clock and everyone celebrating did I realize what just happened.

To be honest, I was celebrating so hard that I didn't even realize how much time had ticked off or any of that. As far as I was concerned the game was over.

That Rams fan who built the Superbowl 36 conspiracy web site always points this out. At the time I was too busy being drunk and screaming to care.

LOL, pretty sure me and my friends all immediately ran outside screaming at the top of our lungs and did snow angels, so I can't recall much of what transpired after the FG went through.

so if there are 2 or 3 seconds left........the pats squib kick it.........it touches a ram and game over...........

I do believe there should have been a second or 2 given the way it turned out......but I don't believe that a kickoff can be downed that fast as to have any time left for a play

Yeah, i remember seeing that site somewhere. Its as if BB told the team before the game..."guys, if there's a FG to win the game with 7 seconds left, be sure to run out on the field as soon as it looks good. This will confuse the refs, and they'll just let time expire, and we win"

We also have to remember that BB had film footage of the Rams getting off their plane. Surely the NFL was helping us to win

Yes he does. However, if you actually watch the footage that he has, the footage shows that the clock had incorrectly stopped for 3 seconds.. So the time keeper running the time off the clock actually did the correct thing.

P.S. Pats1 and I tore into him pretty thoroughly. He was just too deluded to realize he was wrong. Also, the site is finally gone. It used to be located here: http://stlouisrams.net/xxxvi/

It's stupid but Raider fans are worse about the Snow Bowl game. It go to the point where I really think some of them believe the ball had some kind of navigation system installed by the NFL to make sure Vinatieri hit the kick.

That's probably the one thing that the 2001 whiners actually do have a gripe about. No way a FG takes 7 seconds no matter how long it is. But it wouldn't have mattered anyways so it's not much of a gripe

Repeat word-for-word to see how I felt after Moss made the touchdown catch in the final minutes against the Giants.

Leave it to me to focus on the Big Loss, in a freaking thread about a SB we actually won!

I'll never assume we won again, until we've won. Rookie mistake.

The bruhhah from post-sb36 might have been part of the reason the refs were so anal about having one more play at the end of the sb with the Giants.

I'm going to find a way 2 watch future Super Bowls in a 3rd world country, so if we go ahead with 2 minutes left, I can just turn it off and live out the rest of my life in blissful ignorance.

I can distinctly remember thinking the same thing, that the Pats were still going to have to kick off and stop the return.

What if a few weeks later, you suddenly see local village natives walking around wearing Pats SB Champs hats and T-shirts? That would be an even worse way to find out.

I was at the game....and regardless of the 4 second rule there should have been time left...I believe and if I am wrong ignore but the time should stop when the field goal crosses the plain of the posts. I watched it hit the net and saw tics left on the clock...I went nuts that the field goal was good but it was somewhat and I stress somewhat subdued because I expected to have to kick off. but I quickly realized it was over and WE WERE CHAMPIONS!!!!

Didn't we have to kick off after the field goal in SB 38?
