Meet the Rookies: Sebastian Vollmer

Here's an interesting little tidbit to whet your appetite: at Houston, Sea Bass's OL coach was Joe Gilbert—who was the coach of another Patriot lineman.

"he thinks the guy he sometimes hired to watch his kids as arguably the world's largest babysitter has a very bright future ahead of him."

Wow, I wonder if he's available on weekends? That's one guy who could get my kids to brush their teeth.

so his OL college coash though he projected as a RT.....and yet we still have him at LT
I don't think it said that. Gilbert said "You're going to be competing with a guy that I coached at the University of Toledo, Nick Kaczur. Your probably going to be competing with him for the right tackle job".

Gilbert assumed Vollmer would be started at the easier position, that doesn't mean it's his long term projection for Vollmer.

I agree with the stellar Patriots coaching staff: this guy is the real deal.

Athleticism, size in super abundance, and coachibility--this guy's a keeper. A starter next year if not sooner.

Guten tag, Sebastian. Ich freue mich, Sie diese Jahreszeit zu sehen. Sie sind groß!

I have a real good feeling about this guy.
I dunno, I think he just might turn into one of our better
blockers... with time in the Pats system of course.
My bosses in Germany like him too.
Who'd of thunk it.:)

Coach Scar has a thing for foreigners coached up by Joe Gilbert... I guess we'll have to watch and see if Illinois recruits anyone else from outside the U.S. for their OL.

The key for me is coach Scar. Hey - if this dude can take wrestlers, unsigned free agents, etc... and turn them into millionaires...

There should be reason to optimistic because now he can work with a high pick with all the tools already mentionned by the posters.

uhm............do to my lack of article finding ability

just curious but what ever happend to that wrestler from kent state BB signed after the draft?

did he get cut or something?

Not yet, he's been working at RT with the third string.

that is interesting

Not very uncommon at all. I don't think the percentages of college LTs who make it as an LT in the pros is all that high... most are projected to shift to RT claiming the added diversity of being able to fill in at LT if needed.

Projecting him at RT was probably intended to boost his draft stock - not lower it.

Yeah Seabass is the real deal. I mean there was very little known about the guy but BB taking him that high when people were calling it a reach just shows how highly they regard him.

He just looks the business in the youtubes I seen of him, he has the quick feet and the size and that height. Man I can't wait to see this guy starting.

SeaBass was my adopted rookie and I'm glad to finally see some press on him :) xfingers crossedx he's going to prove to be a great find; I bet we see him this season even if just for a cameo:singing:

When everyone was calling Volmer a ROT, I was the one who thought there was a possibility that the Pats saw him as a complete LOT, able to both Pass block, as all LOTs must do; BUT also excel as a Run Blocker, that ply the best LOTs do,and allow their teams tot be even-handed and able to run both right and left.

Especially after I saw the short video of him at LOT. His feet looked pretty good.

Then I heard that none other than Dante Scarnechia worked out both Beatty and Volmer, seeing them when they were running his drills. Belichick also went to see Beatty and Butler, which was very unusual.

The Pats (Dante!), must have thought that Volmer was something special. As you DO NOT take a ROT when a highly prized LOT is available. Especially since the thing, driving him into the second round was simply that he needed some weight room and development work; and the Pats had no need for him to start immediately, with Light a fine LOT.

It may be that Volmer breaks in at ROT, frees Kaczur to go to solidify the interior positions, and in a few years when Light is done, that Sea Bass is moved to LOT.

Vollmer is legit. Watching a few of his videos, I got to see several really good things. First, he dominated Larry English in the drills. English won every matchup on the practice tape other than when he was against Vollmer. Second, Dante was working him out in one of the tapes. He had him doing quite a bit of kickslide drills. He's quick into his kick step, explodes off of his plant foot, and keeps his weight balanced. Dante started doing that agressive clapping players live to hear coaches do several times during the workout. In another drill, he was blocking two defenders. Kicking towards the outside guy, pushing off and driving hard to the inside. This drill simulates picking up delay blitzes. Vollmer was scary fast in his footwork. I'm talking Ryan Clady feet. In run drills, he got his ass low, exploded through his hips, and drove upwards with his arms. He looks like a nasty inline guy. Some other drills showed him clearing out into space on screen drills. Vollmer was quick into his bucket step, exploded into his screen zone and settled nicely once he arrived.

Add all of these to his unquestionable intelligence, high character, track record of success, clear work ethic and one begins to see why he was drafted where he was. He's going to be a special player, and my favorite German genetic engineering experiment to date.

Great post .. I think Vollmer and Ohrnerger could be starters on the line in 2010/11

Unfortunately, the head researcher of the experiment was fired because he produced the wrong type of "football" player. ;)

I'm talking Ryan Clady feet.

Thanks for the analysis! If Vollmer really has Clady's feet but is bigger, stronger, and 20 Wonderlic points smarter, I'll settle for that. :)

Holy crap. If Patchick says good job and doesn't slice my post to bits with superior intellect, I truly have arrived as a poster. This is the greatest day of my e-life:D
