AFC East Coach Blasts Ryan: Could It Be BB?

"You don't do that," a coach of another AFC East squad said of Ryan's back-and-forth in the media. "It's a lack of maturity. It shows a lack of knowledge of (the role of) a head coach.

"This is just about publicity. 'Look at me! Look at me!' That's all it is."

there are some AFC East coaches who don't think Ryan did himself or the Jets any favors. They simply can't see the point in engaging with a coach or a player from any opponent, let alone those that he must face twice per year.

And they agree that he should have thought twice before tweaking the nose of Belichick, who had no response for Ryan's rings crack.

"Whatever you want to say about Bill, he has the pelts," one coach in the division said. "(Ryan) has nothing."

The Jets might very well have the sort of dominant defense that Ryan was able to build in Baltimore. Yet, their chances of having a better team than the defending AFC East-champion Dolphins or the Patriots, both of whom finished 11-5 last season, could be severely compromised by the fact they won't have an accomplished starting quarterback.

In all likelihood, the Jets will enter the year with rookie Mark Sanchez as their starter. That, alone, could easily make Ryan's first season as a head coach a very humbling experience.

"You can't win without a quarterback, and right now (the Jets) don't know what they have at that position beyond a lot of hype," an AFC East coach said. "Nobody knows what (Sanchez) is going to be. He might very well be another Matt Leinart.

"And I don't care how good a defense you have or what kind of (other offensive) weapons you have. If you don't have a quarterback, you're not going to win."

Only time will tell just how cheap all of that chatter in the AFC East will prove to be.

Power of a preposition. The article leads off with the phrasing "the coach of another AFC squad" which would indicate he is the entire coach of the team, i.e. head coach. If he'd said "coach from another AFC East squad" I'd tend to agree it could be one of many positional coaches or coordinators.

However, the article seems to be written in a way to intimate it's a head coach; of course, that could be intentionally misleading and it's really the asst. special teams coach from the Dolphins but that isn't nearly as sexy of a scoop.

It's obviously not Bill Belichick because his name is mentioned within the quote. I doubt he would refer to himself in the third person as well. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a head coach but an assistant.

I don't know what planet Ryan has been living on, the Jets haven't done jack since 1998. Sure they have made the playoffs a few times, but they were always a lock to get bounced out of the first round. This year, a rookie QB will probably start and they play the Patriots twice a year. With Brady coming back, you can just chalk up two automatic loses on your schedule. No matter how good the delusional Jets think their defense is, it probably won't be enough to win 8 games.

I agree, reading the whole piece it doesn't sound like a HC; but the lead-off to the piece (i.e. what 99% of the audience will read) says "a coach of another squad", which makes me think he wants it to sound like a HC even though it isn't and he technically never says it. If that makes sense ...

The quote doesn't sound like BB to me, but I'll leave the exegesis of the words to those who are more familiar with his mode of discourse than I am.

But, the tabloid press in NY (Gary Myers of the News, e.g.) is already firing shots across Ryan's bow to the effect that he should walk the walk before he talks the talk. If I were Ryan, I'd be worried about that. It means that he's going to have little, if any, Goodwill Capital on which to draw with the ravenous NY media when things get rough.

As for Sanchez, it's my opinion that the Matt Cassell phenomenon last year snookered the Jets into taking a risk on another (relatively) unproven USC QB--one season isn't much on which to bet a franchise! Will NFL lightning really strike twice in the case of two relatively untested guys at the same position from the same school? We can't know of course, but I'm going to say, I really don't think so.

If that's the way it turns out, it will be another delightful chapter in the long history of the Pats in general and BB in particular messing with the heads of the Jests.

OK. Here's how I'd phrase it if I had permission to use a quote w/o the name of a HC:

"Another AFCE Head Coach said..."

"The head coach of another AFCE team said..."

His phrasing looks deliberately slippery. I have never seen BB described as "a coach of the NE Patriots." You don't say a coach to mean the assistant strength and conditioning coach.

It also seems extremely unlikely that a HC will speak "off the record" really loosely but would be conscious of their "on the record" impact. That's more something you do when your boss will get you. So HCs would do that in "league matters" or even when the head coaching "fraternity" might swing into action, as in the cameragate matter... but for this sort of silliness? I don't see it.

Now then let's think about the possible alternatives:

- An assistant from another AFCE club, including us

- A past assistant from another AFCE club, including us, or the Jets (it was another Jets team, see...)

- Anybody, including a voice in the writer's own head or down at the corner bar. This is the problem with anonymous sources.

It's degrees of mendacity at this point, but that's the problem with a little innocent stretching in a story like this. You notice the innocent stretch and you wonder how much more stretching is possible when the writer's up against deadline and wants it to be good.

This kind of phrasing is to a sportswriter in the offseason what steroids are to major league sluggers. Come on man... it's what entertains them... everybody does it... how am I supposed to compete...
