Actually, I believe that the Patriots hold exclusive rights to the players they drafted, whether they are signed or not. Same goes with every other team. That's why, for example, the Saints can't target a Patriots unsigned draft pick. The Patriots own them until they say otherwise.

Yup. An unsigned player would be free to sign with the UFL, the Arena League, or the NBA if he wanted to, just not with any other NFL team.

I'll be darned... that site wasn't there last week when I did a search. Maybe they haven't folded after all, but I wouldn't hold my breath either.

The USFL played three seasons. A lot of future big-name NFL stars played in it, such as Steve Young, Jim Kelly, and Reggie White, just to name three. Marv Levy coached there.

It's funny that one of the two guys that founded the UFL was also a minority partner of the Oakland Invaders in the USFL. Guess he didn't learn his leason.

What's even funnier is that the USFL is slated to come back in 2010, with 12 teams playing a 16 game season.

Are you sure about that, TrueBeliever? Now that I've thought about it, I think you are right. The Bills drafted Jim Kelly, and he went to play in the USFL instead. If the rules haven't changed, I guess that's the way it is.

Sorry, I guess I never considered the possibility. Some of these unsigned drafted players WILL go there for a chance to start and showcase their talents. You know NFL scouts will be keeping an eye on the UFL this year. I bet somebody is going to find his way to big money this way.

Legally I don't think the NFL, as an employer, can stop you from working somewhere else just because they're considering hiring you.

You've made a True Believer out of me. Just something I haven't though about in a long time. I'm a Bills fan. I can remember sitting in stadium and my dad telling me that if we got Jim Kelly, the Bills would go to the Super Bowl...he didn't say that we would WIN it, just go. LOL. I remember it vividly...then we DID draft Kelly, and he went to the USFL for a while.

Here's something maybe YOU didn't consider: if the NFL has an uncapped year soon, it could lose a bunch of their players to these other leagues, and here's why. While there would be no ceiling of players' salaries in an uncapped year, there would also be no floor. So you could offer Tom Brady a billion dollars and offer a backup player a dime. At least that's the way I understand it. So, in an uncapped year, you could see a bunch of these guys taking a hike over to a different league because there'd be more money in it for them.

These upstart leagues could take off this way. After all, there is a huge demand for football, and it's a short NFL season. If they were smart, these leagues would start their seasons in Febuary and hope to pick the bones of an uncapped year.

lol the lions should do that!!!

a bunch of UDFA`s could easily loose 16 games in a season and itd be much cheaper!
