NFL Network's Jamie Dukes compares Bill Belichick to Phil Jackson, head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers who just won the NBA championship.

Belichick is the NFL's 'Zen Meister'

Few can argue that Phil Jackson might be the best coach in the history of professional sports. Ten NBA world championships in the modern era speak for themselves. But upon closer examination, I find similarities between Jackson and New England Patriots coach.

Then after comparing the two in this brief column, he finishes up with this line:

So I ask you, is Belichick the NFL’s Zen Master or are you still holding onto the joke that was Spygate?

He also says: "The Patriots are renowned for having the highest collegiate graduation rate among NFL teams."

I didn't know that.

HAHAHA Awesome ending. I like his way of thinking. Well if brady wasn't injured in 2008, we'd be in possession of the Lombardi trophy and not the Squeelers. Compared to NBA coach jackson, he lost to Celtics, came back and won the damn thing. Second time the charm this time. Of course for us its gonna be the 3rd.

comparing phil and bill is a diss to bill....

in a way...phil wouldnt have won this (at least not so easily) if it werent fro the refs

however, i do like the sound of that ending

Furthermore, PJ had MJ and then KB.
Sure BB has TB but MJ is 1/5th of a Bball team.
QB is 1/22 of team at worst and 1/11th of the team at best.
TB is great because he was under the BB coaching tutelage.
MJ was already awesome when he came to NBA.
BB gets the nod.
Sorry PJ.:singing:

Hold on there. Jackson is not even in the same league as Bill and I
don't mean sports league.

Let's see how Jackson does losing his key player.
Doc made the playoffs after losing KG and others.
Bill went 11-5 after losing his key player.
Jackson although a good coach has had the benefit of
tremendous players to do well.

also: given the Lakers stating 5 talent my guess is
50% of the league coaches would have had similar success.

Jackson's not even the best coach in the history of the NBA, nevermind in all of professional sports. That pretty much kills the article with the very first sentence.

Until BB produces a 19-0 record, nobody is going to believe it.

jackson had the greatest player of all time and the second coming of the greatest player off all time on his teams and he had shaq. auerbach had to beat the greatest force in nba history in wilt and he did it many times. jackson never faced any competition like that. jackson is a great cherry picker that never had to build a team. once jordan retired jackson turned tail and ran. he couldn't get out of chicago fast enough. red is still the best coach ever. and of course spygate was a joke but i do give dukes credit for saying it, unlike any of those bozos on that other joke of a network.

For argument's sake, Jackson took the Bulls the year after Jordan's first retirement into the Eastern Conference Finals and were 1 phantom foul call away from going to the Finals. I'm not arguing that Jackson is a better overall coach, but you can't use the argument that Jackson's had the best players tied to his success and not say the same thing about Bill when compairing him to Bill's accomplishments because without Brady, Bill as a HC only won one playoff game.

when jackson went to chicago, jordan was already there and great. bb drafted brady and when bb went to the pats they were considered the team furthest away from the superbowl.

I think you are wrong. Jackson never went to a conference championship
game in Chicago without Jordan.
He didn't even win his Division the year after Jordan retired.

BTW, in the NBA you've got better than a 50% chance of making the
playoffs. In the NFL your chances are 6 out of 16. Big difference.

Now if you want to compare Jackson and Parcels you may have a match.

I'm not arguing that. Someone made a comment about Jackson not winning without his key player. I simply referenced him to the 93-94 Bulls season where they had a pretty good year without Jordan.

For the record, I think we have the best HC in sports. I just think that some people are unfairly discrediting Phil's accomplishments because he had the best/some of the best talent. You still have to coach. If it was the case of simply having talent in your team, Doug Collins would have multiple championships and so would Del Harris. You don't "luck" into 10 championships.

I think BB is one of the best defensive minds to ever coach in the NFL, but let's face it, he has not won squat without Brady.

Parcells on the other hand has gone to the playoffs or better with every franchise he has ever coached/GM'ed. Regardless of QB, regardless of coordinators, regardless of owner. And while Parcells will never be considered in a conversation involving great minds, he is beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of (maybe even #2 behind Lombardi) the greatest motivational coaches of all time. I find it amazing how loyal "Parcells" type players are to him, even in an era of free agency.

You're right. It was a second round playoff loss. Even still, pretty amazing for a team that was led by Scottie Pippen who proved that he wasn't the player people thought he was when he stopped playing with Jordan.

Not a big NBA fan but I believe neither Chicago or LA won anything before his arrival.

Also, didn't he get hired in LA because they had talent and couldn't win?

However, comparing football and basketball is a stretch. An NBA coach isn't in the realm of difficulty of an offensive/defensive coordinator.

Any football coach who wins multiple championchips is above Jackson.

Ten rings to three. Long way to go.

If BB had 6 rings and a 19-0 record, it's a statement to his excellency.

I'd take that. :D

Some people here are just being Phil Jackson haters. We should consider it compliment to be compared to the winningest coach in NBA history.

Not to argue with you specifically, but I think that comparing Bill and Phil is a futile attempt. I think a closer comparison to Bill is Red Arbauch, simply because both are/ were for responsible for both the present and future of their respective franchises. I cannot recall for the life of me a single draft pick that Phil can lay claim to. Meanwhile, both Bill and Red can lay claim to Hall of Fame picks. That to me places more franchise value in a coach than just jumping from team to team.
