Antonio Appleby released
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
June 16, 2009 03:42 PM

The Patriots announced that rookie inside linebacker Antonio Appleby has been released today.

Appleby was originally signed by New England as a rookie free agent out of Virginia on April 30, 2009.

The Patriots have had success with rookie free agents emerging (e.g. Randall Gay, Mike Wright, Pierre Woods, Gary Guyton), and some felt Appleby would be the next in line. Because he played in a 3-4 defense at Virginia under Al Groh, Appleby was projected to have a head start in his transition to the Patriots.

The Patriots have Jerod Mayo, Tedy Bruschi, Gary Guyton, Eric Alexander, Paris Lenon and Vinny Ciurciu as options at the position, with Mayo and Bruschi the returning starters.

Third-round draft choice Tyrone McKenzie was projected to help, but he tore his ACL in rookie minicamp and is expected to miss the season.

Yeah, but Rex Ryan isn't afraid of the Pats or Belichick and he'll just take him to prove he means business.

Vinny's chances of staying with the team just increased.

This has to mean there making room for Peppers!

Opening up a roster spot for Burgess, perhaps (or Vick, Plax...OK, I'm kidding!)?

Let's get 'em ALL in while we're on the Peppers subject.

Heartbreaking. (The food at Appleby's, I mean.)

I still think we should get Peppers...

If you want peppers I suggest heading to your local Price Chopper or Farmer's Market because that may be the only way you will get peppers this year - Do you like the green or red ones?

Neither,... You honestly dont think the pats can make a move for him...

The only thing that surprises me on the linebacking cuts is that

there is so little depth. There is a grand total of 11 linebackers

competing for 9 or 10 spots. In the meantime, 3 players from

Navy who probably can't play until 2011-2015 are still on the

roster.

Would seem to suggest Mayo is healthy.

First McClinton and now Appleby; two forum UDFA binkies don't even make it to through June on the Pats' roster.

I do think Appleby may be good enough to catch on somewhere, so for him perhaps it is better for the Pats to cut him now - giving him more time to sign with another team before the start of training camp.

I believe it is a testament to the quality of depth on the current roster that players like Appleby can't stick around. Between all the free agent acquisitions and the number of draft picks the Pats had, it is going to be extremely difficult for any UDFA to make the final cut on this team.

Where is the quality depth at inside linebacker?

No,First off John Fox will not let his best player go for a few draft picks and the Cap would almost have to be totally restructured for what Peppers wants.

Also,You would have to hope for Peppers to join the team at a reduced rate like Moss or there is simply zero chance IMO

Bruschi (or Guyton) and Lenon would be the backup depth behind Mayo and Guyton (or Bruschi). In my opinion if there's a question at ILB it is in the starting quality of whomever starts next to Mayo; not the quality of the backups.

Do you think he'll consider a pay cut??? Sometimes its not all about the money, Championships and Legacy means more to others...

Another point, maybe he doesnt wanna be on that team... Maybe thats the reason he has signed the tag...

Peppers will take 14.9 million dollars a year instead of 15 million

and 49 million guaranteed instead of 50 million to play for the

Patriots.

Lets sign this beast!

Oh wait, that is only the automatic response for players cut by the other 31 teams....never mind.
