ProFootballTalk.com - Greg Ellis Picks The Raiders

Pretty funny one. Not like even we as fans don't make these kind of cracks about Patriots signees.

Former Cowboys linebacker/defensive end Greg Ellis, whom some linked to the Patriots because: (1) he can play outside linebacker in the 3-4; and (2) he’s over 30, will sign with the Raiders, according to Calvin Watkins of FanHouse.

It’s a three-year deal, and it’ll be signed later today.

Ellis reportedly visited the Raiders on Friday, and he agreed to terms Sunday night.

We thought Ellis might land in Cincinnati, where former Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer now arranges the X’s.

Since the Raiders primarily run a 4-3 defense, Ellis likely will play defensive end exclusively — further greasing the skids of Derrick Burgess’ exit, possibly via trade to the Patriots.

After all, Burgess can play outside linebacker in the 3-4, and he’s over 30.

I liked Ellis more than Burgess because no compensation would have been necessary.

Burgess has a $3.5 M salary, unless that is changed I don't see him becoming a Pat.
Derrick Burgess

Hope this is true, but this theory rests on the faulty assumption that there is some method to the Raiders' madness.

That's a dangerous assumption indeed.

All and all, it would make a deal to send Burgess to us seem much more likely and it's the last glaring positional hole to be filled before TC, Pre-season and into the regular season..... Outside Linebacker.

I'm on-board with a high second or a third round pick to Oakland for Burgess. Preferably, a third!

I don't know a lot about this guy. Is the prospect of getting him exciting? Are we sure he'd be an upgrade? I'm not asking to start a fight, I just don't know.

All good questions, JSn..... I don't know either. If BB pulls the trigger on compensation for Burgess that's good enough for me. Not all FA's work out but a lot do once BB brings them in, we'll just have to wait and see.......

I would say no, but someone once told me that BB is smarter than me :D
I just don't see how we have the money right now to do that trade, and sign rookies. Also, i think Woods will surprise some people this year. Or, ive lost my mind

I too, have high hopes for Pierre Woods this season. As well as Sean Crable. Maybe if BB decides to trade for a Burgess he sees him as OLB insurance, and a bridge to the 2010 season. I just theorizing here. I think it's safe to say, IF BB acquires him he sees the value of the player better than almost anyone else, God might be the better judge but I wouldn't bet on it!

Why would anyone *choose* to go to the Raiders as a FA? That's just crazy. Ellis needs to get his head checked.

I would shocked and extremely disappointed if we gave up a "high second" round pick for Burgess.

I think he might be a nice pick-up, but not at that price

Given the reference in the alternative to the 3d round pick, I assume he meant a "high" number selection, what most of us refer to as a "low" second round pick. If Burgess can provide what the pre-injury Colvin provided early in 2007 I would be on board for trading our own 2d for him.

I get my highs and lows confused when it comes to the draft sometimes....

By "high second round" I mean the worst of the three we currently possess. Would that be stated correctly as the "lowest" second rounder we have?

Ask yourself: If a player was drafted 'higher' than expected what would that mean to you?

Oakland will trade Burgess to the Patriots after the Raiders

consummate their deal for Julius Peppers.

Peppers to Oakland! That'll never happen............... Oh, I get your point suddenly! Heh, heh......

I don't think he had much of a choice tbh, no-one good wanted him, probably

I refer to picks as early or late round picks. To me that is the least confusing way to think of them. A late round pick is near the end of the round. And an early pick is near the beginning of the round, etc.

I'm hoping we pay no more than a 4th round pick for Burgess. Wouldn't he also be a conversion project for 3-4 OLB or has he played OLB before?
