Put this thread in a time capsule until December 31st and predict the best to worst offense and defense for the AFC East this season ....

1 - Being the best
2- 2nd Best
3- 3rd Best
4- Being the worst of all 4 teams

My Rankings are ...

OFFENSE

1 - Patriots - Unless Tom Brady has forgotten how to throw a football, this offense will be dynamic - Not as good as 07 but no one should expect that.

2 - Bills - I think T.O. has found a team that may make good use out of him and I dont see him complaining about not getting the ball - Evans and Owens will give defenses a lot to work on and Lynch could be in for a 1,200 yard season even after the 3 game suspension.

3 - Dolphins - Ronnie Brown is a threat anywhere on the field and the Wildcat will be not a shock nor will it be as successful once the opposing teams have figured them out - Ginn has yet to impress but with the return of Camarillo it will help Chad immensely.

4 - Jets - I really doubt that Sanchez can duplicate what Ryan and Flacco did last season in getting their teams in playoff contention as rookies - The Jets lack of a receiver threat will come back to haunt them,if Thomas Jones does not have a good year this Jets offense could be horrid,Cotchery and Keller are not enough ammunition.

DEFENSE

1 - Jets - With Ryan as HC you know the focus will be on defense and if Rex can get Gholston and the linebackers going in the right direction like he did in Baltimore, then this defense could be a top 10 defense - The secondary looks solid and if they can get some productive LB play they will be very good on the D - Best in the East,on Paper at least for now IMO

2 - Dolphins - Porter is again the leader on the Defense and they did not lose too much from last years squad - I would think they will be pretty decent and if Jason Taylor can end his career with a productive season then the Dolphins can have an even better pass rush then last year.

3 - Patriots - O.K. I will not get much love by putting the Patriots at #3 but we are talking about a secondary that is just about totally rebuilt with a 34 year old CB starting and a CB from an 0-16 team and a rookie back there as well - no one including BB knows if they will all gel together at this point.so its up in the air as to how good they will be.
The LB corps aside from Mayo and the front 3 are all question marks,Bruschi is down to being a mentor more than being a factor and the Pass Rush is simply unknown as to who will pick up the slack - If Lenon,Crable,Banta Cain and Woods can't get it done opposite Thomas then it could be up to experience from this team at safety (Merriweather and Sanders) to carry the load if the front 3 have problems. -
I think this defense will be somewhere ranked around 14th when the season is over but hopefully the high scoring games that I expect will be plentiful this season will be on the winning side of the Pats.

4 - Bills I think the Bills have a fine corps of good young LBs but I dont really see much from the rest of the D to think they will be better than 4th in this division on D,The offense must be explosive to keep the Bills in games.

I really think BB and Pees will use Lenon in various ways depending on formation, situation and injury.

I hope that Lenon is not expected to be the #1 pass rushing threat but I do expect him to be able to add a little pressure to the QB at times,I think BB thinks he is capable of this too.
Although once again, any member of the 0-16 Lions that is playing here deserves some wonder if they are going to be good with another team.

3 - Patriots -...a 37 year old CB starting (Springs is 34) and a CB from an 0-16 team and a rookie back there as well (plus others) - no one including BB knows if they will all gel together at this point.so its up in the air as to how good they will be.

Offense

1. Patriots - enough said

2. Bills - The addition of Terrell Owens helps

3. Dolphins - They will get better when the Dolphins get a QB that can throw the deep ball. Maybe Henne is that guy.

4. Jets - They might have the worst offense in football. They will struggle to put points on the board this year.

Defense

1. Pats - As people on this board know, I'm very critical of the Pats defense. They had complete garbage in the secondary last year and they still managed to be 11th in the league in pass defense. However, they gave up critical plays when they needed stops the most. With that said, by no means am I being a homer on this one, they just seem to be the best in the division. The additions of Bodden, Springs, Chung and Butler should improve the secondary. In addition, Wheatley and Crable will also feel like extra draft picks for the defense. Lastly, the return of Adalius Thomas will boost the pass rush.

2. Dolphins - The addition of Vonte Davis and Sean Smith will help out their secondary. Also, the addition of Jason Taylor can't hurt either.

3. Jets - I already wrote a long post about what I thought about the "best defense" in football and I don't see it. In short, their D-line (minus Jenkins) is pedestrian, their LB's are no better than New England's and their secondary minus (Revis and Rhodes) are no better than New England's.

4. Bills - Their D-line is weak and can't generate a consistent pass rush. Lastly, their secondary gets picked on a lot.

I'm still not in love with the Jets' defense as everyone else is. I don't get the fascination with Lito Sheppard and obviously neither did Andy Reid or Jim Johnson with the Eagles. I still question whether Bart Scott is as good as he looked in Baltimore because of the players around him although he is still an upgrade at the position. They have zero depth at many of the defensive positions. Kris Jenkins has yet to prove that he can play at 100% for an entire season anymore. I may drop them to #2 behind Miami and they could be third if the Pats can turn around their woes. I do expect that stats wise the Pats will be the better defense just because like in 2007 the offense hid a lot of weaknesses of the defense because teams were forced to get one dimensional to keep up with the Pats.

I think you got it pretty close to right with your initial predictions. Here's something to consider : will the Jets offense be so bad that the defense LOOKS worse than it really is because it has to play too many minutes ? Using that logic, I think people might look at this thread in December and say that the Pats D is #1 - because the offense might be really good at getting 14 point leads (see 07).

So... I think the initial rankings are right, but certain things might be misleading during the season due to the team's deficiencies (Jets O) or strengths (Pats O) on the other side of the ball.

4 - Bills I think the Bills have a fine corps of good young LBs but I dont really see much from the rest of the D to think they will be better than 4th in this division on D,The offense must be explosive to keep the Bills in games.

Why put the Bills last in this category? They finished above the Jets and Dolphins statistically last year in overall defense. Their biggest problem was lack of a pass rush IMO, and a lot of that had to do with them losing Schobel early on. Schobel will be back, and they drafted Maybin #11 overall. Stroud next to Schobel is a solid situation...both of these guys have made the Pro Bowl more than once. If Maybin can step it up and contribute this year, the Bills d-line could actually be pretty good.

The Bills secondary is actually one of their major strong-points, ask me. McKelvin and McGee, the Irish duo, are going to be pretty strong Corners. Youboty was finally coming on excellently in the nickel before he was out for the season fairly early on. Whitner will be solid at Free Safety. Jairus Byrd, the second round pick, has great potential at Strong Safety. The Bills have a lot of depth in the secondary. It was the lack of pass rush that made them look bad a lot of times last year. That was the key, and that's why they drafted Maybin.

Their linebackers are pretty good, with OLB being the glaring exception. Keith Ellison was a starter by default last year, and it looks like it's his spot to lose this year. He could lose it.

This is such a waste of time. Porter and Ryan (& Co.) have already spoken. The Jets will have the best defense in the NFL, but the Road the the (division) Championship goes through Miami.

Frankly, I'm just hoping the Patriots can salvage a split with the T.O. & Bills this season, to keep from going winless in the division.

I mean, come on people. Crowder's already conceded the OTA title to the Jets. Let's just hope the Patriots finish last in the division with a little dignity.

Offense
1. Pats -Upgrades at QB (Brady>Cassel), RB (Taylor>Jordan), WR (Galloway>Gaffney) and TE (Smith>Thomas.) It also appears that certain players will be heading in to the season healthier than they were a year ago (Maroney, Neal, Kaczur, Light.)

2. Dolphins - Miami didn't make as much of a splash as the other teams did on offense but now that I look at it again they may have done just as well. They added three WRs in the first 87 picks to replace Ernest Wilford and have somebody else to go along with Ted Ginn and Davone Bess. They were alreadt set at RB, and C Jake Grove is an improvement over Samson Satele (the guy the Dolphins drafted with the pick they got in the Wes Welker trade.) Their best move may have been re-signing RT Vernon Carey.

3. Bills - Buffalo signing Terrell Owens made NFL offseason headlines, but did there offense really improve? LT Jason Peters is gone with no direct replacement. The Bills drafted C Geoff Hangartner, swapped LG Derrick Dockery for Seth McKinney, drafted G Andy Levitre and also signed C Geoff Hangartner. It takes time for offensive lines to gel; my guess is that Trent Edwards is going to have another concussion or two before that happens.

4. Jets -the Jets draft picks are expected to pay dividends down the road, not this year. Looking at only 2009 in comparison to 2008, Mark Sanchez is a temporary step backwards at QB replacing Brett Favre, and RB Shonn Greene is a 2010 replacement for Thomas Jones. Jerricho Cotchery should be a #2 WR, and after that it's Chansi Stuckey and David Clowney. With Chris Baker gone the next TE on the depth chart after Dustin Keller is Bubba Franks. Damien Woody is due to be replaced but it looks like that won't happen till next year.

Defense
1. Dolphins - Just like on offense, they didn't lose anybody worth worrying about. At CB Miami should improve with the additions of Vontae Davis, Sean Smith and Eric Green. FS Gibril Wilson is an upgrade over Renaldo Hill. Jason Taylor and Cameron Wake improve the pass rush at OLB.

2. Pats - Huge upgrades at CB with the additions of Leigh Bodden, Shawn Springs, Darius Butler - to go along with a year of experience for Terrance Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite - made Ellis Hobbs expendable. Rodney Harrison's leadership will be missed, but someone from the group of Patrick Chung, Tank Williams and Brandon McGowan should be able to fill his role on the field. A healthy Adalius Thomas and Shawn Crable should make up for the loss of Mike Vrabel at OLB. At ILB Tedy Bruschi may be slowing down, but Jerod Mayo and Gary Guyton should continue to improve, and Paris Lenon adds depth. Ron Brace adds some depth on the DL to help keep Vince Wilfork fresh. I'll move the Pats up to #1 when I see evidence of more pressure on the opposing QB - and ability to make stops more often on 3rd down.

3. Jets - The Jets have upgraded, but thanks to overlooking the offense they may find themselves on the field more often than they would prefer. At CB Lito Sheppard is an upgrade over Ty Law and Dwight Lowery should continue to improve. Bart Scott is a huge upgrade over Eric Barton at ILB, and Jim Leonhard is an improvement at SS over Eric Barton. Even with these three, I'm not sure Rex Ryan can improve the team's defense if they're out on the field for 40 minutes a game.

4. Bills - Aaron Schobel's return helps a lot but I'm not crazy about Aaron Maybin with the #11 pick in the draft. DT Marcus Stroud is good but John McCargo is not. At OLB Nic Harris replaces Angelo Crowell, but I wouldn't expect a whole lot from a 5th round draft pick in his rookie year. The Bills may end up like the Jets, where the defense is simply on the field too much.

I will play.

Offense
1. Pats
2. Dolphins
3. Jets
4. Bills

Defense
1. Jets
2. Dolphins
3. Patriots
4. Bills

LOL, heat for pats as 3rd? no way...

i believe I would put the pats as 1st on defense as well...its a little homerish, but heres the logic

i would say off the top of my head that half if not more of the defensive starters for the NYJ did not play there last season...that a lot of turnover, and i dont think theyll get in sync from the beginning of the season....

the bills will be same as last yr, pretty horrid

the fins i expect to not be as good....i expect them to be playing from behind much more this season, hence making the defense weaker, but also i dont see porter producting half the sacks he had last season....and all in all that defense is pretty mediocre...only have Taylor come back is a question mark...

us? we got AD, so we have a better pass rush, we have an actual body on the other side, instead of an innefective Vrabel ( i dont think whomever takes that spot can be worse then vrabel), the DL is the same, but with brace....
the LB, with AD's return, and with Mayo's more experience is better then last yr, and do I have to mention the backfield? ohhh man, the improvement on that should be amazing....with weatley and wihlhite healthy, with two GOOD starters, and with the rookie CB (whom i cant believe that I cannot remeber the name of).......not to mention chung in the rotation?

ill go on a limb, and say well have the best defense this yr in the aFC EAST, as well as offense

1ST POST!!!

OFFENSE:

1) Patriots - look to see them returning to near-07 form.
2) Jets - smash mouth running game, great O-Line will carry this O - led by a rookie QB with some young, unproven receivers
3) Phins - It's an odd # year, which means Pennington will suck. Trust me, I'm a Jets fan.
4) Bills - It's the Bills. T.O. will complain that Edwards sucks, and than they will implode.

DEFENSE:

1) Jets - Rex & Pettine's system will work here. Look at the talent of the starters: off the top of my head; Revis, Jenkins, Harris, Scott, Sheppard, Leonhard, Rhodes, Pace, Ellis, etc. This should be a feared D throughout the NFL. The only concern here is depth.
2) Phins - add a solid rookie corner & don't lose anyone key.
3) Pats- need work on their secondary.
4) Bills - the whole D isn't that good.

Good first post. Comments: Agree with you offensive comments. (Does that sound right?)

Defense:
3) What work do the Pats need on their secondary? Signed 2 quality CBs, drafted a CB high, got last year's 2nd round CB back from IR. Added quality S Chung.
4) Bill's D is even worse than you state. There is a good chance they will finish 5th in the division in D.

Haha... That bad, huh?

How the hell can you justify putting the Phins' defense ahead of the Pats'? Whatever the opposite of homerism is, it runs rampant around here with people who go way overboard in a misguided attempt to appear objective, but just end up looking foolish instead. Jason Taylor does not make an entire defense go.
