Time To Finally Break Up The Big Three?

This article made me realize how lucky we have been to have one of the best young defensive lines in the league for all these years. With exception to Seymour in '07, they have stayed healthy and have performed at a very high level, perhaps the best in the league among 3-4 defenses (and maybe even overall). Honestly, I am secretly (or not so secretly) hoping the Pats find a way to keep both Seymour and Wilfork. However, if I were pressed to pick one, it would obviously be Wilfork for reasons the article mentioned. Replacing a NT in a 3-4 is a lot more difficult than replacing a DE and Wilfork is younger than Seymour, albeit not that much younger. Anyway, we'll see what happens. Either way, we've had a good run with these guys.

the article brigns up a very good point...

what if BB is thinking of changing to a 4-3? and therefore does not need an expensive nose taclke like wilfork, and will settle instead with lesser priced DT's?

wut if he also gets rid of seymour, and we lose both these guys, and then Brace and Warren are the only 2 ppl left, and they play the 4-3, and we add a quick DE with another DT?

you never can know wut bb is thinking, but maybe, just myabe, BB's solution to the pass rusher problem is going to a 4-3 with more pressure directly from the DL, much like the giants, and hence leaving space for 3 LB's Mayo, and AD with whomever else shines (if u recall, he only drafted one LB this year).....

wut if this season he used the time to complete the backfield, and now he'll focus on the front 7?

it would be very interesting to say the least

BB is the guy who preferred calling Colvin & Seau to keep the 3-4 than going 4-3. Also, in other seasons that people have suggested the 4-3, he keeps finding guys to play OLB to go 3-4 (ex : TBC).

He might fiddle with the 4-3 (as always), but until I see it, I think BB will be a 3-4 for the forseeable future.

I do not know that is being referred to the cheaper DT.you mean haynesworth money or tommy harris money or the guy al signed recently.

all made more than seymour btw.

Interesting...about the Big Three....and I agree lucky that the team has had these three for awhile..NOT SURE..if they would go to a 4-3 or??? Who knows...I think they could??? But they had a 4-3 in 02 and..it wasn't the best...I still think they have the players for the 3-4..and will work out of that as a base.. Maybe more 4-3...yes... Time will tell...I would like to keep both..BUT..I know that might be impossible.

If it comes down to Seymour or Wilfork, I'd rather see us keep Seymour personally. Nose tackles may be harder to find overall, but Seymour is a rarer talent (there isn't another 3-4 DE in the league who can do what he does) and a three-down player.

I would note that it is likely not the patriot front office that will break up the DL. Seymour has no interested in playing here in 2010, although he certainly would play for the franchise tag amount. :)

Well, it looks like GM and Chrysler are on board with breaking up. Now it's just Ford left.

I'd have to agree with you here, but unfortunately, we're going to be in the minority.

Unfortunately, this may be Seymour's last season as a New England Patriot. In fact, it makes me sad because he was the first piece of the defensive overhaul in 2001. He was a big reason why the Pats improved their defense in 2001 and won the super bowl. Although some people think he gets injured too much, I can't find anybody else in the NFL right now that I would take over Richard Seymour as a 3-4 defensive end. As he regained his health last season, he dominated without having any stud pass rushing LB's taking pressure off of him. That's pretty impressive if you ask me. I'm sure he will have another great season now that the Pats improved their secondary and maybe get something out of Crable, Redd or Woods.

In the end, Seymour will command top dollar and be in high demand because he is the best 3-4 end in the league.

Seymour is the best 3-4 DE in the league, so surely he won't play for the patriots.
Wilfork is one of the best 3-4 NT's in the league, so surely he won't play for the patriots.

Should we continue with Brady, Moss and Gostkowksi?
=========================================

At times in the pats, the patriots managed to have the best on ouer squad. Sometimes, these players were in the top 5 as far as current compensation as their postions.

The patriots may have Seympour and Wilfork playing for us next year. Wilfork is more possible because OTBE, he'd like to stay. With Seymour, OTBE, he'd like to go.

==============

My favorite scenario is to have extensions in place for Brady, Wilfork and Gostkowski and to franchise Seymour for 2010.

Franchising Seymour would cost a ton of money obviously, do you really think it's possible that we'd give him almost 20 million guaranteed--just for one yr?

What would the figure be, approx.?

Similar to Peppers this year

But yes, we might do it, especially in an uncapped year, or to give a new 2010 draftee a year to develop. If Green is gone for 2010 (quite possible), then Seymour would provide one more year of stability at DE. Belichick may choose to keep Green and let Seymour go, especially if he getws a top DE. However, a 2nd round DE is more likely.

When BB selected Brace in the second round my first thought was, is BB thinking of using a 4-3 alignment? Wilfork, Brace, Warren and Big Sey would be a formidable wall! It's inevitable that Warren, Seymour and Wilfork will not be together much longer... We've had a nice ride with them though......

You guys are so daft. Belichick won't let them walk. he's already proved that.

Belichick constructed this DL, as a key priority in building his Championship teams. Seymour won't even turn thirty until mid season. He already gets Haynesworth money; or more appropriately Hayneworth gets Seymour money, since Seymour has been getting that for 4 years. A small pay raise of a million a year keeps him for his career. Wilfork will be signed for $7 million a year long term. Supposedly, Tough but doable as that is only a $3.5 to 4 million kicker on what he makes now. So the Pats can keep BOTH for a $5 million more a year. Tedy's retirememt will provide more than half that sum. Its a piece of cake.

Signing Mankins may not be necessary yet. That leaves Bodden, Woods and Neal. Finding money for them doesn't seem outrageous either.:)

And the rest of that could come from Green coming off the books. I like the guy, but if he's the piece that has to go to keep Seymour and/or Wilfork here, then so be it.

I don't see the Pats re-signing Green unless Seymour signs somewhere else. Green is replaceable.

two words franchise tag...can we please worry about this next year
