It is somewhat misleading to read that Miguel lists us as having 36 signed with $52M available, so we are fine. First, Vrabel's dead money and that of other dead money that will be there is not accounted for. Also, many players (at least a dozen) listed are not likely to make the 2009 roster. On the good side, the 2009 rookies aren't listed. I revised and ended up with 32 players coming back. I have not included any RFA's except LeVoir who will almost certainly be tendered.
I think that we are in normal shape, except for the situation on the lines, where so many have contracts that are up, including Seymour, Wilfork, Green, almost all the interior linemen and almost all the tight ends.
As I have indicated, extending Wilfork and Green would go a long way toward 2010 roster stability on defense. On the offense, I suppose the best that could be done in 2009 is to extend Neal and/or sign a long-term deal with Johnson or Hochstein.
OBSERVATIONS
1) At $1M a roster spot and $6M for end of the year stuff ($25M or so), that still leaves us with $20M-$25M for top players, presuming there is a cap at all.
2) We are fine at QB, RB, WR, CB and S.
3) We are very thin at TE, OG, and DL.
4) We could be fine at LB, depending on Crable.
5) We have no kickers, punters or long snappers.
