Palmer to Brady: 'Be prepared for the mental obstacles'

"I would just tell him to be prepared for the mental obstacles when he gets back on the practice field -- and the game field," Palmer said. "You have to get over being uneasy about people being down around your feet and get over feeling like you need to step out of the way to protect yourself."

The article goes on with some statistics that show the Palmer, Donovan McNabb and Daunte Culpepper were sacked more often in their first year back from knee surgery, and has some quotes from current Pats about coming back from an injury.

Tank Williams: "You have to get used to doing the things that, as a player, used to be second nature to you, whether that's running or cutting or moving. And you have to get that mental confidence that you can make every play you used to make."

Fred Taylor: "The mental part is usually the thing that comes last," says new Patriots running back Fred Taylor, who has fought through a litany of injuries as a professional. "It really depends on how strong you are mentally, how much you love this game."

"I've always just been excited to get back -- it didn't make it tough for me. Still, if you don't have those types of games you usually have, you go down a little bit, but you have to keep pressing forward."

Well - to hear Brady in his interviews, he's not experiencing the normal psychological impacts of a traumatic injury as of now.

It's possible - though not proabable - that he won't.

God Brady isn't human so I don't expect any major mental obstacles.

This quote should make Patriots fans who know TF Brady well, psyched and confident.

I love how these websites show the stats of Culpepper, McNabb, and Palmer coming back from surgery but choose to ignore the stats of Rivers. Slant much?

Rivers injured his plant leg and spent a good amount of the year throwing off his front foot. Credit his strong arm for compensating on the downfield throws. So the thing to look for with Brady is how willing he is to extend his stride leg on deep throws. If he holds back, his accuracy downfield will probably suffer greatly.

Phillip Rivers does not have a strong arm, nor has he ever. He has an above average arm, but its not strong at all.

ya, he has that awkward shot put style delivery

Didn't Breer include Rivers in his article? I thought Breer's stats showed some good QB ratings, some bad sack %, and one guy (Rivers) who bucked the trend.

I don't know Tom Brady. I've never sat down with him. Never even met him. Some on this board seem to have done so and I respect that.

All I can say is that "I don't know." I don't know what will happen when TB takes the field in a "live" NFL game.

The indications are that he will be great and will come back strong. But, none of us can know until that happens.

For now, we hope and we believe.

Brady to Carson Palmer: 'Be Prepared For Mental Asylum'

"I would just tell him to be prepared for the mental asylum when he gets back on the practice field -- and the game field," Brady said. "You have to get over being uneasy about criminals being down around your feet and get over feeling like you need to mace your teammates to protect yourself."

What you said. I have no idea how the injury affected him mentally.

I think a lot of Brady's psyche depends on the play of the offensive line.

I expect them to rise to the challenge in a big way.

And I don't think Carson Palmer is in the same mental toughness league as Brady. One's a very good player, the other is a Hall of Famer people will be talking about--and voting for (Sen. Brady?)--for decades to come.

But I'm a little biased.

I'm not in the least bit worried about his mental state. If anything, I'm worried about another/the same injury sidelining him again.

Mental Obstacles are for mortals, they don't apply to Tom Brady.

Mental obstacles are only there for the first few games or whatever activity you do, then you just get back into it and your enjoyment and focus makes you forget all about injury.

Palmer threw for over 4,000 yards, 62.3 completion percentage, 28 TDs, and made the Pro Bowl his first year back. I don't know why people think Palmer struggled so badly when he came back. That season he threw for the second most yards, second most TDs, second fewest INTs, and second highest passer rating of his career. In fact, Palmer's numbers that year tied Brady's career high prior to 2007 for TDs, was higher than any season passing rating Brady had prior to 2007, and was only about 70 yards less than Brady's career high prior to 2007 in passing yards. If Brady has a similiar year this year to Palmer had his first year back, I will be happy (not estatic, but happy).

As for Culpepper and McNabb, both are mobile QBs who use their legs to their advantage. Neither are like Brady. Also, Culpepper didn't rehab with any team and did it on his own at a local gym.
