Does he have a chance to make the team?
Perhaps destined for the practice squad this year, and on the 2010 roster?

University of Virginia Football: Antonio Appleby

2007–Started all 13 games at inside linebacker ... made 60 tackles ... was in on six tackles for loss, including three sacks ... broke up six passes, tops among ACC linebackers ... helped defense allow just nine rushing touchdowns, the second fewest in the ACC and fifth fewest nationally ... career-high 11 tackles in the opener vs. Wyoming to share the team lead.

2006–Assumed a starting position for all 12 games at inside linebacker ... second on the team with 68 tackles ... five QB pressures tied for third most on team ... recorded seven tackles in games vs. Wyoming, Western Michigan, East Carolina, NC State and Miami.

2005–Played in every game with two starts ... started the final regular season game against Miami and the Music City Bowl vs. Minnesota ... saw extensive action on the punt team, as well as the kickoff and punt return teams ... 27 tackles led the team’s true freshmen ... was in on six tackles in his first start against Miami ... made a career-high 10 stops, including eight solos, in the Music City Bowl win over Minnesota.

Beach's Appleby hoping to crash the NFL party

"I know everybody wants to go to the combine," says Appleby, an inside linebacker from the University of Virginia, "but it's kind of a long, drawn-out process of how they select people. I just took the attitude, there's no reason to cry over spilled milk. I just tried to use it as motivation to get where I am now."

If Appleby truly is going places, there are a couple reasons why. One, he's a load of a linebacker - 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds - well able to fend off linemen and stuff runs.

And he was a three-year starter in U.Va.'s 3-4 defensive alignment, which could be important. The 3-4 is all the rage in the pros. Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl with it. As many as a third of NFL teams plan to run a version of the 3-4 this season. Who better to work into a fledgling 3-4 than a hulking, mobile guy who understands its intricacies better than most?

"That very definitely does help him," U.Va. coach Al Groh said. "When teams can look at a kid playing the 3-4, they don't have to project nearly as much."

That is, Appleby says, "they can look at me on tape and directly see what I do within schemes that are similar to what they're going to run. That's really a bonus for me, knowing that a lot of teams are converting over."

NFL.com Prospects

Former UVA star Chris Long and outside linebacker Clint Sintim earned most of the credit for the success of Al Groh's 3-4 scheme, but Appleby's size and physicality in the middle made him just as integral. With the focus on gaudy statistics, it isn't difficult to understand why Appleby never received more attention. His average output of 67 tackles and six tackles for loss over his three years as a starter isn't eye-popping. For teams looking for a physical inside linebacker prospect capable of making an immediate contribution in a 3-4 alignment, Appleby makes sense as a second-day prospect.

The Sabre Roundtable: 2008 In Review

Q: Any individual surprises for you?
A: The other is linebacker Antonio Appleby, who had the best year of his career as well. He recorded a career-high 72 tackles despite missing time (essentially two full games after getting hurt on the first drive against UNC) with an injury. Appleby was on pace for nearly 100 tackles and he may have threatened Jon Copper for the season lead if he didn't get hurt. Kudos to Covington and Appleby.

Also, from Andy Hart of Patriots Football Weekly after the rookie minicamp a few weeks ago:
ILB Antonio Appleby, a rookie free agent out of Al Groh’s Virginia program, struggled a little in pass coverage working one-on-one opposite the running backs. Add him to the list of guys I expect to look better in pads in training camp. Plus, inside linebacker with 3-4 experience are clearly more suited to contact drills in the running game than pass coverage in shorts.

Knowing nothing about him, he has some advantages. Played a 3-4 in college, cheap and will likely be competing against free agents and jags, unless the Pats decide to draft or spend for linebackers again.

I've spouted off a lot about the LB position, but i have no problem with saving money at a couple spots and depth.

To do that successfully, you need to look at a lot of cheap players to mine a few gems and that's why a guy like this would be wise to try to get to the PS if he gets cut.

More likely he will follow in the footsteps of ILBs Claridge, Lua and Ruud (go on IR and then never play a down for the Pats).

i would love for him to take over mckenzie's spot now that he cant fill it, and sevre as the 4th guy in the ILB rotation/buck up role

more then ciuriu, or the guy we just picked up....

I don't know why we seldom fill up that PS with linebackers. We end up with guys at positions they'll never break into.

Except for OL, we've used it well there.

OK, I'll ask. Why would you want an UDFA over a 7-year veteran who has never been injured, is a top special team and who had 120 tackles last year.

What secret knowlege do you have that would lead you to believe that Appleby would be more productive than Lenon?

Graduated high school with this guy, wasn't friends with him though. I really hope he makes the team.

i never said Appleby would BE more productive then Lenon....

i WANT Appleby to be more productive than Lenon...and its precicely b/c of the age....we would be able to pair guyton, mayo and appleby together for the future where Lenon has i would say about 3 years left

He is a long shot but looks stronger against the run than most of our guys. I guess on 3rd and short we go 4-3.

I look at Lenon as a proven commodity, a measuring stick with which to compare the rookies. If the rookie out performs the veteran, then the quality of that position is better than the benchmark. So, I hope Appleby does well for this year not only future years.

Because 120 tackles doesn't mean anything, and being a great special teamer doesn't mean hes a good LB. Bad defenses spend a lot of downs on the field, and linebacker tackle numbers get inflated by that.

Detroit was terrible against the run (32nd). Their pass defense against TEs was terrible(32nd). Their pass defense against RBs is the only good spot (8th). I see very little reason to believe that any of the LBs on detroit are any good, let alone the one they didn't even make a vet min offer to keep.

I don't think Appleby will be able to beat out Lenon just because Lenon is looking like a solid contributor on ST. My only hope if Appleby can make it on the PS and not get picked up. If he does well in the preseason i don't think he'll last very long.

Yay!

Let's get all excited about an UDRFA whom we honestly know nothing about other than what draft websites wrote about him and throw Paris Lenon to the curb, because after-all, he's just an NFL veteran who's had good production and the unfortunate luck of playing for some crappy teams.

Weird stuff.

I will guarantee Lenon not only makes the team but also get significant reps at ILB.

Appleby...I know nothing about the dude. I know he fell off the draft board. I hope he is a diamond in the rough and is able to contribute.

Yay, lets get exited about a 7 year veteran who has been cut by 5 different teams, had to spend a year in the XFL, and didn't even get a contract offer to return to the DETROIT LIONS.

Hes a special teamer. Circui is the one who needs to worry about his roster spot.

I don't think anyone's excited about Lenon. Just happy he adds some depth that was lacking. My opinion is he'll be more than just a special teams contributor. Not because he's a late blooming star. More because I believe our LB situation is even worse than advertised at this point.

Based upon pure proven production to date, who would you wager $1000 on to contribute the most to the team this year at the LB position:

Appleby, Redd, Guyton, Woods, Crable, Alexander, or Lenon?

If you're picking anyone other than Lenon, I know a bookie that would love to do some business with you.

Betting on Pure Proven Production?

I'd bet on Guyton. He's the starter this year.

Lenon is on a 1 year deal with minimum contract. THats classic "lets see if he sticks in camp". I wouldn't even bet $10 that he makes the 53.

all you need is 1 or 2 injuries and youll be kissing lenons butt, appleby wasnt even invited to the combine, at least lenon knows how to tackle in the nfl and has experience something you cant teach rookies

Are you serious?

If you'd said Appleby, Alexander or Lenon, maybe you'd have made some sense. Guyton was an undrafted rookie who surprised many in his first year at ILB in the pats system. He can only get better in his second year. Crable is a third round pick that the pats have a lot of confidence in. Woods started a few games and carried the load until breaking his jaw. I don't think the pats would have traded Vrabel if they didn't think they could get some decent production out of those two. Each of these three has a legitimate shot at starting due to youth and upside.

That's not to say Lenon may not be a surprise in this system, but right now, he's on a lower rung than the three I just mentioned.

Neither was Wes Welker.

The NFL doesn't keep track of missed tackles, so I don't see 120 tackles as all that important of a stat. Tracking defensive player quality by tackles is patently absurd.
