Maroney is a shy guy due to his shoulder injury?

If you don't think criticism from people who haven't played NFL RB or who would "run scared" is appropriate, then no poster is ever allowed to criticize anyone...after all who among us could play any position?

Maroney runs too upright which is probably partly why he was injured. He has a good heart, is brave, but danced behind the lines too much even before, long before, he hurt his shoulder.

he broke his shoulder because he runs too upright?

Yeah, I hear ya EOM...but in defense of kline...

if you are getting tackled you want to cover the ball and go forward not backward (leg/spinal hyperextensions, exposed head and neck etc) I'm not referring to Maroney's injury but reiterating a simple rule when rushing the football. Leverage and momentum=inches.....this is a game of inches....and violence.

There are intangibles involved in the fundamentals. Some players are former Wrestlers (Neal, Vollmer) or have been in Martial Arts (Andre Tippett). I won't get to specific-most of you already know this.
There are unconventional things to give you an edge at ANY position and they're legal (offense/defense/st). Pay attention the to the leverage, hand work and movement on the line. This isn't baseball, basketball, hockey....not even close.

It's like the playground. Someone hits you-you hit them back-unless you want them attacking with the feeling their gonna bury you. Great example of relentlessness would be Wes Welker!

Regardless of what side of the ball you're on-you have to play like that. I want Maroney to play harder and earn that reputation among competing defenses. Fred T has it. Maroney has shown it and I'm excited to see what he's got!

Maroney simply got injured-can't blame it on anything but contact in a contact sport but you always need to protect yourself and make sure the tackler understands that you'll hit him too.

Stiff-Arms are great too:cool:

It's time to beat A**!

Clearly, that is correct. And, it would be the rare doctor who could perform brain surgery if the competency criteria included having been a patient for such surgery oneself.

In raising the "run scared" point, I was only expressing my exasperation with those who seem to enjoy calling Maroney all sorts of names but who have little understanding of the game and/or no appreciation of what it takes to be a successful RB in the NFL.

I have no objection to the kind of critique that you offer in your second paragraph; it is fair, objective and it is offered with respect for the player. That is definitely NOT the case with some of the nonsense that is written about Maroney and that was, for example, written about Matt right after he took over for Tommy last year. That is what I gave rise to my comment.

We all come out here to express our opinions on the quality of play in a rough sport in an even rougher League, a League in which few if any of us could ever play in our wildest dreams. That's a given. What I don't like are comments that betray both ignorance of the game itself and a lack of respect for these guys who bust their guts (and shoulders) playing in it.

I agree w/ you 74.
I misinterpreted and reacted to the "running scared" comment-completely misunderstood what you meant.

Maroney and all the guys deserve more respect and should NEVER be called *****'s. At 34, I couldn't ever imagine lasting one game as a pro but then again my knees are pretty beat.

There are a few here on the board that I respect and its usually the older dudes....some others obviously play too much madden or fantasy.

We forget-the games are literally battles-lots of pain-the team needs our support not insults

Thanks. For what it's worth, I've never had an issue with anything you write.

I've studied the NFL and its history, going back to its earliest days...and its prehistory. This is a game that demands a selflessness and commitment that is almost heroic. It's only in recent years that there were pensions and compensation that rewarded the average player and, in some cases, even the Star.

Fair criticism, respectfully and fairly made, is completely appropriate and great, but it just frosts me when people, who have little understanding of the League and what it takes to step between the lines, take off on guys like Maroney or Cassel because they don't meet some fantasized expectations.

I once worked with a (in business, highly successful) guy who washed out of the Boys and Jets camps and never played a regular season down in the NFL. He was totally dedicated to football and had wanted nothing more than to make it in the NFL. His knees and back were wrecked from the effort he had made. I came away from that friendship with a deep respect for the people who play the game and so I have zero patience with the juvenile, mindless crap that people have thrown here at guys like Maroney and Matt.

Fred Taylor has a tough reputation? Are you smoking crack? He's been known as "Fred Glass" for most of his career.

You are obviously an uneducated football fan basing your opinions on reputations and what others SAY.

Stop watching t.v. sweetie and go to the gym like I do.

Fred is pretty high on the all-time rushers list. He has been hit-duh.

He has played quite a few games-so injuries are natural. Especially at RB.

Most knowledgeable football fans understand this

and no....I'm not a big fan of crack
but I heard your dad was
