ProFootballTalk.com - Cowboys Are Shopping Greg Ellis

The Dallas Cowboys have placed linebacker Greg Ellis on the trading block, according to Calvin Watkins of FanHouse.com.

Ellis, a first-round pick in 1998, is due to earn a base salary of $4.15 million in 2009. He has a cap number of $6.25 million.

Watkins says that the Cowboys have targeted New England and Cincinnati as potential destinations, but that the Pats aren’t interested.

Maybe they're confident because we have that mini camp stud Crable?

I'm kidding.

Considering the Pats cap situation and Ellis having a $4.15 million base salary, I would say that lack of interest is a given.

Though I am sure somebody will say that the Pats saying they are not interested is a smokescreen and the trade will surely take place within a week.

At that amount?? I understand WHY they are not interested..Peppers?? THAT ship sailed awhile ago...

I was going to make fun of a source with a name like fanhouse.com, so I checked it and saw some legit writers on its roster.

Turns out Calvin Watkins is the NFL beat writer on a Dallas paper, so he's got cred on Cowboys news.

New journalism - can't tell the players without a scorecard.:D

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

Why would the Pats want to deal with this....they have plenty of picks in the 2009 NFL draft and will be addressing the OLB position then.

Oopsie....my bad.

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

im assuming this guy is an OLB.....

can he rush the passer? if so, can he play cogerage and set the edge?

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

I thought he was pretty good... I think the Pats are expecting him to get cut, and then hopefully might make a move.

6'6"

3-4 OLB

2008 - 16 games - 8 sacks - 36 tackles
2007 - 13 games - 12.5 sacks - 31 tackles

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

If they didn't trade for the cheaper Burgess why would they trade for the older, more expensive Ellis, and possibly unfamiliar with the system Ellis?

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

So now we're discussing players who we don't want.

What's next possible Patriot players who are playing in division 3 who we'll never put on our draft chart?

Wanting to trade for and wanting after getting cut can be two different levels of desire.

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

he will be 34 when the season start's and would take up most of the CAP and none of the rookies have signed yet and that why the pats are not interested

and if the cowboys are shoping him that mean's he will be cut by july

i cant see makeing trade's for LB on the worng side of 30

if it's a vet that was cut by a team and they bring him in for a good price why not

but to give up draft pick's for a 34 year old LB who may not even beat out woods for a starting job i cant see it

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

for that cap hit, of course they aren't interested.

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

From just the better player perspective Id take Ellis over Burgess. More experience in the 34 and is still pretty productive.

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

If you're talking about giving up a mid-round draftpick, you better be bringing in someone who can contribute for 2-4 years.

Ellis is 34, he's only got so much left in his legs. Considering that the Pats need pass rush, a speed based skill, it would not make much sense to me to pick up a guy on the verge of hitting the wall to improve the pass rush.

Burgess doesn't know the system but he 3-4 years younger than Ellis and wasn't a full time player his first 2 years in the league. He probably has more football left in him than Ellis.

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

Why would we replace Vrabel with a guy that is the same age with the same cap hit but doesn't know our system?

If he's cut and willing to play for short money, that's one hting. To trade and absorb his 2009 salary PLUS give up trade compensation? Makes no sense at all.

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

I hear Rosie Colvin's available.

Seriously, is it impossible that the Pats will stick with Thomas on one side and Woods/TBC/Crable/Redd on the other? Is that the worst situation imaginable?

I'm just getting a little tired of following the crowd whenever any DE/OLB 6-2 or taller might become available. It's over. I'm with Woods. Vive le Pierre! :woot:

Re: Cowboys are shopping LB Gregg Ellis and the Pats are not interested

Another thread countering our get young at defence threads by lets get an old guy for a high pick one.
