Good read on McGowan

Thanks for the link. With so much focus on all the draftees, who will play OLB, new corners, free agents on offense, and some guy named Tim Brody, I had forgotten all about McGowan.

Yeah I think everyone has really, along with guys signed after the season ended - before draft.

Thanks for the link..a great read...I was happy about the signing...he will bring a lot to the team...

McGowan has the talent to be a good corner but injuries have hampered his career a bit.

So you figure him and Tank are vying for the same roster spot?

Big thanks to fair catch fryar for posting. Good stuff!

Could it be possible that in this case Tank would be penciled in with the ILB's, for the so called hybrid role? It's just a thought, it may be stupid though.

I think McGowan makes the team, hands down. He can tackle well, and provides us depth at the safety position. I'm looking forward to seeing the defensive backfield gel together, and hopefully become a vital asset to the defense again.

IMO Tank will definately see both LB and S if he can stay healthy,We will need depth in both areas

How many safeties does BB usually keep? 4? 5? Right now it's:

Sanders
Meriweather
Chung
McGowan
Spann
Tank
Ventrone

Locks are:
Sanders
Meriweather
Chung

So that leaves only one or two spots for the others? Maybe three if Tank is one of them and he counts as ILB/S?

I'd love to discount Spann & Ventrone, as neither adds much past ST, but yet they keep making the roster ...

It could be that they kept making the roster due to lack of better competition, as I would bet for sure one is gone this yr. Just my opinion, though. I think the problem would sort itself out then with the following:

Sanders
Merriweather
Chung
McGowan
Either Spann or Ventrone

Tank could be in with the ILB's then, as I see him making the cut for sure too. I think Belichick was somewhat excited about his potential use of options with him before he was injured last yr.

Spann is a waste IMO and Ventrone offers little as well - Both need to go if the roster is limited to 5 safeties - if Rodney returns which is unlikely then you may see competition between Tank and McGowan for the last spot or maybe BB puts the Tankster full time at ILB

My pleasure. Anytime I can contribute to the board with some material I would, but it isn't often the local paper scoops up a story like that up here. Besides, I'm not exactly an avid Black Bear football fan, if they exist, but I was impressed to learn that he was on the team at the same time as Stephen Cooper and Lofa Tatupu before he transferred to USC. Plus, he sounds like a smart & tough kid.

Maybe this will be the year we carry 10 defensive backs instead of the ususal nine. However, I think one of the corners is the backup free safety. I would have drafted one. I also like Tank. I think he makes it if he is healthy. So, I have

Meriweather, Sanders, Chung, McGowan and Williams

all making the team as safeties. And yes, Williams will be an ILB in certain situations.

Absent injuries, I don't see Spann winning a spot. Ventrone, as last year, is competing for one of the WR/ST spots.

I would like to keep Tank, However, I think that most of his reps will come on special teams. There is now plenty of safety depth in McGowan, Chung and even Springs. With regard to linebacker depth, I expect that we will sign at least one additional linebacker, more likely two or three. Tank will certainly get camp and preseason reps at linebacker.

IMO Tank will definately see both LB and S if he can stay healthy,We will need depth in both areas

I had that dude on my fantasy team last year --- he's a tackle machine all around the line.

I can't wait for week one!!

Ventrone is a whiz on ST; could be Practice Squad eligible, don't underestimate Bubba.:D

I agree. And he will competing with Aiken, Slater and Tank Williams for ST roster spots.
