NOOOOOO....16 games is a perfect season (no pun intended). Why fix whats not broken? I love the length of the season as it is now. Lengthening the season would push back the Superbowl a few weeks. The one move the NFL recently made that I like was moving the Pro Bowl to the week in between the AFC Championship Game and the Superbowl.

Awesome move, Roger. I'm sure the players are going to love this- will really make it that much easier to get a new CBA amicably worked out when the players realize that:

a) they're not getting paid more
b) they're being told to play more, significantly increasing chance of serious injury
c) their contracts still aren't guaranteed against such injuries
d) the owners are making that much more money

I love me some football... but the lure of football is the pure animalistic tendencies... its short lived and savage... can the pads make up for the sure to happen injuries at this point? when the NFL MVP goes out in the 1st 15 minutes of a season, I don't think we're there yet.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with posturing for the pending labor negotiations.

I wonder if all this talk about lengthening the season is simply a smoke screen for the upcoming CBA. Bring it up enough times and in the court of public opinion, fans will say yes - more games! Eventually the owners can then concede at the negotiating table - and expect the NFLPA to do the same on another issue. That would be a win for the owners, since in reality they would not have given anything up at that point.

First, donating to Patsfans.com was one of my best financial decisions. Ian, any way myself and others can donate additionally? Maybe a lifetime donation of something like $300? It truly is a great service that you provide and you deserve to see substantive revenues from your ideas and efforts.

Towards the subject, Goodell needs to realize the strain those extra games will put on the players. It will reduce careers, increase injuries, and only serve to increase the demand for greater guarantees. In my opinion, this is the single most detrimental idea to be presented in a long time.

Seriously 16 games is very few compared to other sports ... Rugby which is a far more physical sport (i.e 80 minutes, one half time break no pads) is 30 odd games a season with league, cups etc

I think 18-20 games is fine and you could optionally start the season earlier to make use of the better weather .. what's the problem with SB being in March for example?

More = better in the eyes of the commish...it means more injuries and the quality OF games being lower....the revenue increase is minimal if one takes the 2 preseason games away...the differential between a reg game and the local preseason..so THAT is not at all a windfall.....
There are three things that teams need to do in the preseason...1) get the team ready for the reg season 2) evaluate talent 3) develop players IF the preseason is 2 games the latter go out the window... Goodell has paid lip service to a sort of developmental spring league..THAT will be needed if 2) and 3) are to be done. There may have to be expanded rosters and other things.
To me it's the owners trying to get this in place as inevitable to force the point in the CBA...I think fans should voice opposition to that so this lever with the fans can not be used.

I think the shear number of injured players by the end of an 18 game regular season will be too great. Offensive Linemen wear down at the end of a 16 game season, especially in the playoffs. It's going to lead to protection breakdowns and hurt QBs. It could become like a last mand standing deal.

The game will change, emphasising depth and the resting of veterans.

With this type of change, instituting a second bye week might mitigate the damage somewhat.

I would add all but one of the additional weeks to the begining of the season. Some winter playoff games are good, but too many will wear players down even further.

I don't think it's a good move.

If Bradys record goes down in a longer season it just means the big ole asterisk
