True story: He made my birth announcement card in 1965.

My dad knew him and asked him to do it. We still have a few copies floating around my folks' house.

I guess I'm a born Patriot!

thks Shmessy: yes , you born a real Patriot !

did he made designs with Pat Patriot ?

i saw this week on the Globe the article about our loss January 1964 against SD in the AFL Championship and there was a design with a lightning with written 'Chargers' infortunately 'killing' Pat Patriot...

he made it ? and he made many of that designs ?

they are beautiful !

Lost and forgotten. A symbol of failure.

Unfortunately, Pat wasn't on my birth announcement, but he did a great job on it nonetheless.

42 years later, wherever he is, I hope he knows that it is much cherished.

He was a cartoonist...like Larry Johnson...papers USED to have cartoonists that told sports headlines much the same way political cartoonists did...LJ is in that dying tradition..Growing up I LOVED how the sports pages were...now..it's lacking a great deal of nuance...maybe some better writers..more stats..but
Bissel i believe is still alive...and in his early 80s..Pat Patriot was BIG in the early days of the Boston Patiots..the AFL one..and MANY of those teams were quite good...with the move to Foxboro..a new stadium..a new name..Pat Patriot retired..

let's hope we will see them somewhere-do you think so ?

I hope they finally pay him! lol

EDIT. I guess it was the Globe that took and gave it away. Billy gave him something. Not much, but probably the going rate for a cartoon then. Successful songwriter Willie Nelson sold "Crazy" for 25 bucks.

I know a lot of people here are boycotting the Herald and Borges, but that was a pretty good column.

'Pat Patriot' creator and his 'son' happily get back in the game by Ron Borges of The Boston Herald

As luck would have it, Phil Bissell had been looking at some photographs of Boston College football players the day Nason told him he wanted a cartoon for an upstart team from an upstart league, and his eye settled on a lineman. From there Bissell’s creativity, which remains abundant to this day, took over and Pat Patriot was quickly born, a 45-minute gestation period before he popped out of the end of Bissell’s ink pen as a Minuteman in full uniform snapping a football with a puckish Irish face while snorting, Now to make some history around here!!

“It was a day’s work for a day’s pay,” the 83-year-old sprightly father of Pat Patriot recalled. “That’s all. Then Pat was abducted.”

That is a very rare must-read article from the Herald and Ron Borges. Nice story-- too bad he didn't make a little more off the drawing. It also includes the story of the "replacement logos" voted on by fan applause at a game, and nobody liked them but they loved Pat.

He was asked to make the logo less angry-looking and more like a Disney cartoon character but wouldn't do it since his Pat was a blue-collar New Englander who scrapped for anything he ever got.
