Re: OUTRAGE: Pats to issue troy Browns # this season?

I believe TEs need to have jerseys in the 80s, and it might even be limited to 80-87, not sure. But so far the roster numbers in the 80s are:

80-
81-Moss
82-Listorti
83-Welker
84-Watson
85-DeVree
86-Thomas
87-Baker
88-Aiken
89-

Not sure if he could have gotten 89 as I don't recall a TE with that number. The NFL has weird rules.

Anyway, what do you suggest they do? It's a number.

When one of the scrub TEs gets hurt, maybe he switches. It's a non-issue. In a few years, someone will be wearing 54, too.

Hell, Vrabel was just given away for nothing, and you think they will hold back a jersey number?

This is about the dumbest 'tradition' in all of sports, not just football.

Chris Cooley, Redskins TE, is #47.
WR and TE are supposed to take numbers in the 80's, but if all the 80's are used up, then they can take a number in the 40's.

Did you just make that up?

No one can take 89 because it's retired. (Bob Dee)

Re: OUTRAGE: Pats to issue troy Browns # this season?

Assuming he makes the team, can't they reassign him another number in the 80s once they get down to 53?

I hope so. He is the Pats to me, as much as any player.

Relax people, its a number. Everybody on the team needs to have one and he got number 80 deal with it. Hopefully he will represent that number well but if he doesn't it wont make me or anybody else think of the number 80 differently.

Re: OUTRAGE: Pats to issue troy Browns # this season?

If anyone deserves to have their number retired, it's Troy Brown.

They probably shouldn't have issued it. They haven't issued a #56 since Tippett retired or a #14 since Grogan despite the lack of official retirement.

#14 was worn by Vinny Testaverde in 2006 so it's been used before.

Smith has some large shoes to fill when he puts that shirt on. Troy's done so much for this team both on the field and off that fans will remember that #,always. The number may not be retired but I hope whoever wears it over the years represents it well, and that it doesn't get handed out lightly :(

Did you just make that up?

They are normally worn during training camp but they do issue the numbers to players:

Lovett Purnell wore #48 in 1996.
Chris Eitzman wore #46 and Rob Tardio wore #48 in 2000.
Johnny McWilliams wore #43 in 2001.
Jabari Holloway wore #49 and Arthur Love wore #48 in 2002.
Spencer Nead wore #49 and Rob Trafford wore #47 in 2003.
Zeron Fleminster wore #46 and Mignery wore #42 in 2004.
Joel Jacobs wore #47 and Andy Stokes wore #46 in 2005.
Garrett Mills wore #45 in 2006 and 2007.

Purnell and Eitzman switched to new numbers when they made the team, Love kept his number 48 even after making the roster. Mills wore his #45 during the season and into training camp before being cut, he still wears it in Minnesota.

Re: OUTRAGE: Pats to issue troy Browns # this season?

All non HOF #'s should be released.

Bingo, as Troy would say. They should have unretired them in conjunction with opening the Patriots HOF. That gives those players sufficient honor, and retiring an NFL number should be strictly limited to players who enter the Football HOF who played the majority of their career/or earned their HOF status with that team.

It would be fine to have any players wearing a Patriots HOF'ers jersey to wear it with a commemorative patch honoring the guy who wore it before them.

Teams often go through 80 odd players a season in the NFL...

I don't remember this much of an outrage at Patsfans when Seau took McGinest's number a year after Willie left.

I think Willie was a bit upset when that happened, but I doubt Troy is,Brown was a TEAM player and never about himself and that is how I think he would react here.

Re: OUTRAGE: Pats to issue troy Browns # this season?

Given that this is a football message board and not the abuse hotline, I'm going with "No" on this one.

I just hope the abuser wasn't wearing a Pats #80 jersey.

Troy is more beloved.

He took Irving Fryar's number so he knows what it is to take a number worn by someone who casts a long shadow over the number and position...I doubt he has a problem with it.

Sorry for the delay in responding, but no, I did not just make that up.
It really is part of the NFL rules/by-laws regarding the assigning of player's uniform numbers.

edit: by "they can take a number in the 40's", I was referring to tight ends.
If all the 80's are used up, then a WR can then take a number in the 10's.

Hopefully some of that Troy Brown magic and workmanship will rub off on Alex Smith!
