I don't know why, but ever since Jason decided to end his career where he had fame and fortune,Willie entered my mind and now I am expecting #55 to return to the team to finish his career just like Jason did.

Willie is still in good enough shape to play and I think someone will sign him - I just don't think it seems possible he will retire on another team and his only spot is right here in New England.

I expect this announcement of his return and signing as a part time player at OLB any time now.

Am I being realistic here? or is this a pipe dream?

(Ty Law is another one I thought about, but there is no room this year for him so I pass on that thought)

Seems like JT has alot more left in the tank. Willie hasn't brought much the last couple years.

McGinest might be good for a training camp body and help to teach some of the younger guys like Crable and Redd, but I can't see him making the 453 man roster. At best, he is a situational player. I don't see him playing special teams at this point. So I can't see him being activated on game days.

What I can see is him doing a year like Troy Brown did his last year where he wasn't activated except for one game to get his catch and then was mostly used in practice.

I would rather see Colvin then McGinest at this point.

Why dont we just bring back Tipp while we're at it.

Willie is so old... He ate at Pizza Hut when it was still just a tent.

Man, the Patriots have 452 players BETTER than Mcginest? ;)

I have a tough time seeing it too. One thought I did have was are there any potential LBs out there, maybe playing in the last year of the contracts or buried on a depth chart, that the Pats could trade a 2nd for? I'm NOT talking about Peppers, but someone more affordable, who the team either thinks they won't resign or just doesn't have a place for.

I have no names in mind, just a thought since we have the extra 2nds next year.

If you're talking about giving up a 2nd for a one year rental, it better be a pretty good player. The one year rental business has been tried a lot more in baseball than football, but you're right in that the concept does seem to be starting to work its way in NFL team's thinking.
A 2nd for one year of an expiring contract vs four years of service from a drafted player is quite a bit of difference. They might do a trade with a lower pick, or be able to demand quite a player if they're giving up a 2nd. Not exactly sure who that could be, but .........

Well, my thinking is we've had pretty good luck bringing in players for a year, selling them on our system, then locking them up. It's an avenue to explore, not sure if there's even anyone out there that fits our scheme who's in the situation.

I AM REALLY CONFUSED

First we get all the Lets get Young OLB threads Now we have started Lets get OLD threads.

as we can only carry 7-8 pure LB and have them in the roster the question here is
GET Willy for who ? Who are we cutting the only guy we can cut based on pure Zero production is Crable.

Pipe dream. Willie isn't looking for work on the field. He's looking for work in a studio. He'll be 39 in December and he had 8 sacks, 1 int, and 9 passes defensed in the last 3 years with Cleveland...

If he wanted to retire here, he could have...by restructuring a couple of years ago. He didn't need the money, but he wanted it. If he'd stayed here and performed as he did in Clevelend fans would have been looking to cut him for the last 2 seasons...

Why not sign Adam Seward??:D I know he is on the colts, but seriously Wille Mcginnist, and how he could be a teacher is a joke.. Willie would teach people how to get his snoop dog on, before how to tackle a rb..

Re: Anyone feel Jason Taylor back to Miami to end career = Willie McGinest back to NE

One of the biggest problems we have had (and often overcome) over the years is injuries. We had the 2 SB winners with the most injuries (based on games lost by starters due to injury) in history, we have had numerous occassions where we reached to the bottom of the depth chart due to severe amounts of injuries (including using players out of postion) we have had times when we brought in a street FA and he ended up starting (both Colvin and Seau last year).
With all of that in mind, why in the world is there such a burning need among fans to bring in old players just because they have proven they can stay on an NFL roster? (consistently any player with experience in the league gets touted as what we must have)
I would MUCH, MUCH prefer to have young players who are less likely to get injured (they get injured too, but not as frequently as older players) who have played in BBs system, knows what he wants, have been trained here, and are guys BB apparrently believes in than to go out and sign old guys, either becuase we remember what they were before they got old for former PAts or becuase the name rings a bell.

That's a fair point and I agree with it. The point I was making is that the number of years left on a contract greatly effects the value of that player, so much so that giving up a second for one year of service better bring an excellent player. I could see the Pats giving up a fourth or a fifth for one year of service for a good player before I could see them parting with a 2nd for one year of service of an excellent player.
You're right that the one year gives the Pats the opportunity to get that player to buy into the system and then extend him, but it's also a risk that he won't go for it, leaving the Pats without that pick next year and the same hole on the roster.

It's like the Cassel and Cutler situation. I'll agree with most people that Cutler was the more experienced and proven quarterback, but a lot of the discrepancy between their trade deals came down to the number of years under contract and the salary. A similar cost/benefit situation would exist for renting an OLB for a year.

Re: Anyone feel Jason Taylor back to Miami to end career = Willie McGinest back to NE

I would rather see McGinest come back as a OLB Coach!! He can be here and mentor our younger OLB!!

Who is our LB coach now? or is Pees coaching both areas?
