Defending WildCat

A a scouts inc writer said in terms of defending it:

"the run blocking angles are so good on this play because all of the offensive linemen have a down angle to block, so the first goal of the defense is to stop the dive up the middle and force the run to the outside where they have more time to react."

It would seem Wifork and Brace could clog up the middle by themselves.
Safeties and Corners stay in coverage The DE's and OLBs either stop run
or get to the Passer. Still got middle LB who reads play and adjust as needed.
I would love to see what these two huge guys could do together.

I seem to recall that NE went with a 4-3 look in the rematch, so you could be right that two road blocks in the middle will free up Mayo to play a roving MLB and hunt down any rambling kitty cats.

that first game against Miami when they revealed the wildcat was the most confused I think a BB defense has looked in his 30 yr career. I hope I never see anything like that again.

I was at the game and couldn't agree more.

I was stunned at how confused they seemed.

Brace is going to sub in for Wilfork and improve our defense greatly on plays where Wilf is typically resting. I doubt he was drafted specifically to improve defense of the wildcat formation.

The defensive plan is written by Bill Cowher. You don't need any special formation to defeat the wildcat. You just need special preparation. BB obviously found a way to do it in the second doofies game.

the pats were caught off guard the first time against Miami and got killed.

i'm not worried about it at all.

it seems pretty simple and i'd be shocked if BB is worried about it.

It's not hard to defend against. If it was some brilliant formation NFL teams would have continued using the Wing-T or "Wild Cat". But they didn't. The only reason teams struggled against it (at the beginning of the year mostly) is because no one bothered practicing against it.

I found it interesting that Miami drafted Pat White so early....but the fit is obvious. If White were 6'4, HE'D have been the first QB drafted. Quite frankly the "Wildcat" is the perfect offense for him to be involved in.

I would agree with the previous posters that in its second year, the wildcat (which is merely a derivation of the single wing offense that was popular 60 years ago.) would pose little to fear for defenses that had a year to prepare for it.

HOWEVER, none of the previous incarnations of the wildcat have had a true legitimate passing threat. This year Miami will have that true passing threat, and THAT will INCREASE the flexibility of the offense exponentially, and make it more difficult to defend. It will also pose planning problems for the opposition who has to prepare 2 completely DIFFERENT styles of offense.

I have no doubt that was the thinking behind signing of Edelman, who is sort of a poor man's Pat White. Also I wouldn't be surprised to Kevin Faulk lined up as the single wing back, because he has shown some passing ability.

For an old cogder like me, the "wildcat" only proves more and more, that there is really nothing truly new in football. I'm sure people will gush about it and about how inovative it is, but in actuality it is nothing more than the reincarnation of an offense that pretty much was dead by the 1960's.

I remember when I was coaching in the 70's we played N. Quincy HS, which at the time was the ONLY team in the state that still ran the single wing. I spent a lot of late nights THOSE weeks we played them.

BTW- one of the advantages to the single wing is that there is a lot of action going on in the back field, which makes it very difficult to find the ball. It is even more effective now, since for the past 2 decades there has been literally NO deception in the NFL running game ever since teams went to the I and one back formations.

The wildcat is not a new paradism, it's option football, which is almost dead even in the hs ranks. I think Pat White could have a future as a QB in this league, just because he was drafted by
miami does'nt mean he's there for the Wildcat. It does however give them an opportunity to get a great athlete on the field sooner rather than later.

Yes, Thank you. I am truly a poor speller, ok, p*ss poor speller. My wife is a savant speller, so if she's around I ussually ask for her help, thus empowering her and strenthening the relationship. But don't worry all of these tips will be in my book, "Three shell Monty's Flying Circus".

I agree, everything old is new again. Many of the "innovative" offenses like Florida's & WVU/Michigan are just hybrids of the Single Wing, Triple Option etc.

The Single Wing is making a big comeback in HS.

i think thats because some of the LB that where playing for him 30 yr ago where starting for us that day lol we have the best front 3 in the game we will be younger and faster at LB now if that dont work move to the 4-3 and let mayo run free and stop it the ravens made the wild cat look like a kitty cat last yer any team like the stellers eagles and ravens who blitz a lot and have fast LB will stop them the wild cat will be a dead cat this yer
