Can Mayo move to SILB?

Whether this season or once Bruschi retires, does he have the size, instincts and ability to shed blocks? Because, if so, that would certainly make life easier going forward. There are plenty of us who love AD at SILB, but the release of Vrabel makes moving AD there a bit more difficult.

Finding a guy to play WILB is a little bit easier. Theoretically, they are the member of the front 7 with the most freedom to operate, the guy who benefits most from the big guys absorbing blockers up front. I know, in a practical sense, that strongside v. weakside isn't always appropriate, but in a general sense, that is what we look for when talking about WILB v. SILB candidates.

At times, Mayo struggled shedding blockers at the start of the season and I remember the Dolphins targetting him, putting the TE in motion and moving them to Mayo's side and running at him. As the season went on, Mayo got much better, to the point where he was a complete beast against the Jets and was meeting blockers and discarding them as good as any strongside ILB could do. Not to mention, he is the surest tackler I've seen in a Patriot uniform in quite some time.

Hopefully in the offseason he has put on weight and increased his strength.

If so, moving Mayo - arguably, our best tackler, one of our hardest working players and most committed to watching film - over to a position of greater need, a position we've found harder to fill, and perhaps a position of greater importance - might be the best move we could.

I expect Thomas to move inside this year or next. I don't think the trading of Vrabel is relevant to that decision. What could be relevant is the development of Guyton.

I think a lot of people are forgetting about Gary Guyton and the promise he showed late last year. We should be fine at LB, barring injuries of course.

I think you are overanalyzing. I'm almost certain that Mayo and Bruschi switch positions with one another on a regular basis in game. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I think Mayo will be able to do anything by the time he reaches his prime. He not only has talent, but he has a work ethic like no one else I've ever seen on this team besides Tom Brady. If he doesn't get injured, he should be a special player.

Can he? Almost certainly. Should he? Almost certainly not. Mayo is the perfect WILB for the Pats and the likely defensive signal caller. I think it wouldn't be optimal to dilute his skills and ****** his progression at WILB by moving him around too much. I'd rather move Thomas to SILB if necessary. That combo would be fantastic, if we could find enough depth and skill to cover OLB.

No , IN strong side he needs to engage gaurds every down, Do you want a 245 LB take on 300 LB gaurd every down.

i think he will end up in IR.Last year he was explosive i assure you if he bulk up or engages gaurds every down he will loose speed his legs will take a pounding.

Last year when he was shooting the gap bru was taking the gaurds to open the lanes why would want him do the dirty work and expect another LB to do his job?

Yes. If he's put on another five pounds of muscle and worked on his hand use/speed he'll be ready to fill in at SILB as needed. Should he? It looks like his best position is WILB, either position requires him to engage OL, but finding someone else to handle SILB duty plays to his strengths and will make the defense more effective.

The NFL is a passing league these days and the teams were likely to need to win against (i.e. Colts, Chargers, Miami etc) burned us last year in the passing game not the run

Guyton is a fast cover guy and although he and Mayo blew some coverage last year they should be a lot better. Bruschi can still play in run downs if he has to

It also helps if we get to the QB a bit quicker and dont let Manning, Rivers etc have 5 minutes to find their recievers

Nevertheless, it's still a useless fact. Anyway, in some ways they're not so drastically difference. The differences are mainly in the areas of grammar and vocabulary. Speakers of Modern Hebrew can easily read Ancient Hebrew. I think that the difference between olde and modern English are greater, but I may be totally off on that one.

We are talking about a rooking here...how much of the problems with blockers and the targeting have to do with him simply being a rookie making rookie mistakes and teams taking advantage?

I don't see him changing positions this year, he is where he needs to be to be most effective for the team.

I was thinking about this and remembered where Mayo was lining up last year. Towards the end of the season, and Particularly in the Jets game, Mayo was lining up at the SILB position. I hadn't given it much thought, but I am sure that if people who still have the games go back and look, they'll find that Mayo was lining up at the SILB position.
