I was thinking today of how BB traded down twice to the second round and still picked up three quality players at DB and DL. He is going to pay his three top pick relatively good money next the the cap for the next four years. I will defer to Miguel on the numbers as it is totally his ball game on this but I would love to here his thoughts.

With BB not really having to spend money on a first rounder this year might have something to do with the economics of Football. I really think BB may be eyeing a top ten talent next year and is putting some money in the bank to do so as well as three second round picks??

From everything I know about BB he is always two steps a head of the situation and when it comes to the economic of football he is a genius. I think he kinda wanted to see how the Wilfork, Seymour, Light, Kaczer, Mankins, Crable, Woods, Wheatly, Whilite, BJEG ect. The way he loaded up on Linemen he left himself some room if a couple of his draft picks work out other then (Butler, Brace, Vollmer and Chung).

Just a though at a boring day at work up here in Canada where I look at all the people who do not understand what a first down is:cool:

I thought I would bounce if off of my buddies on this board:)

They have the second rounders to trade to swap spots, it's not out of the blue to assume he could do that especially if there is someone who won't be there at wherever they end up drafting with their assigned pick.

Belichick will do next year just what he did this year ... trade down ... find bargains and stock the depth. Any reach at a position escalates the salary structure on the team for that position ... he doesn't do that.

You're getting greedy:
- Regardless of where a prospect projects as of today, there is a lot of football to play this Fall which is likely to affect their stock.
- While 2010 may be uncapped, the cost of a Top 10 pick will not change and will be taking a huge bite out of the owner's war chest, especially with the risk of a lockout in 2011.
- How BB 'gamed' this draft has more to do with where he thought he could get the best value for the team in 2009, other than taking the opportunity to gain two extra second round picks in 2010, more or less standard operating procedure for him, he wasn't using 2009 to set up 2010.
- Have you checked the oxygen content in your workspace? It may be a trifle high. :D

I don't think that's unrealistic. Next year some amazing talent projects to make it into the top ten - fifteen, and I could see us making a play for one of the guys. I'd have to assume it would be for either a stud 34 DE (several coming out next year), an OLB like Kindle (a true OLB, not a DE conversion, though he's going to play DE this year), an ILB like Spikes, or a DB like Berry (the second coming of Ed Reed).

Let's be honest. As it stands, this roster is so stacked that choosing more than a couple players is just wasting picks. Where are our needs? Honestly? I'd rather trade up and get one impact guy next year, then roll the rest of the picks forward, and set ourselves up for the next half a dozen years. It's the second half of the dynasty, boys.

Isn't this what everyone said before the 2009 draft, when we had 12 picks, including 6 picks in the first three rounds, and everyone (myself included) said there is no way BB will use all 12 picks.

So we used 6 picks in the top three rounds and made 12 selections.

So what is different about next year?

BB will go to where the value is. If that requires trading up, he'll trade up. More likely it will involve trading around and down. But he has the flexibility to go wherever he sees the value.

I think we still need to draft a LT at some point to get some years behind Lght before he retires - but again BB will likely find talent in round 2 - esp with Dante working them out and knowing what he wants

Hence why it will be so interesting to see how Vollmer works out (over say someone like Beatty) because to me that shows just how good a judge they are

I just wonder how much depth you need as you always cannot trade down to gain it sometimes you have to pull the trigger on a game changer. Or wait for the sixth round 199th overall and take a QB like we did in 2000:D

Box,

You could be right about the air as I think I caught a drift of something foul at work....I hope not the pig virus:D:D

Your first point about prospects this year compared to next year is the thing I though about first off. A guy projected top ten this year might rip up his knee or shoulder to push his status way down. Just examples their but there play on the field could change, remember the DT from Michigan Taylor who many though would be a first rounder for sure:)

The whole lockout situation worries me even though we are one of teams who would be in a position to spend when needed and no cap. There is a whole lot of uncertainty when it comes to the labor dispute and I hope they can get things worked out so I do not go mad on Sunday afternoons in the fall:D

Your point about BB looking at 2009 more then 2010 makes sense as well in my head but for some stupid reason I always think BB is thinking a head. I realize in the NFL you live for today and to make you team better ASAP. I am just wondering about the economics of the whole thing if it was smart to trade down out of first round money this year in order to take our 32 pick and one of our seconds to trade up to grab someone who BB really likes.

The difference is we did not spend big money on a top pick just money on our second rounders who are pretty inexpensive and are great players to add depth.

This time last year Maualuga and Laurinaitis were rated the top 2 prospects overall by many of the "experts". Both went 2nd round. Lots can happen. We're well positioned to do whatever BB wants.

BB does indeed plan for the future, but he does that in a more predictable way. First, he doesn't try to do the job of his Personnel Department, they are the ones gathering the imformation and tracking the progress of the class of 2010. I'm sure they have an "impression" of where that class is headed 'DT appears strong, CB weak, etc.' that is part of the pre-draft 2009 process, but to offer more than that is gambling with the rent money.

Next, planning for the future involves investment. Yesterday NE traded for TE Alex Smith. They used a Day Two draft pick on a known commodity, "safe," Smith is in his contract year, but would be an RFA in an uncapped 2010, "flexibility," he can be retained, or he can be let go as a UFA and return a Day Two Compensation pick in 2011. The worst that can happen with Smith is you cut him (bad investment, move on). Further investment involved "banking" picks for 2010; the two thirds are in the equivalent of a savings account, in 2010 they will be withdrawn, with interest, as seconds - what you buy with the seconds may be junk, but for now you've invested those picks; BB also spent a 5th this year on a known commodity, WR Greg Lewis (same rules apply as with Alex Smith), there's a refund of a minimum 7th in 2010 that made that purchase a better value. By rolling picks forward BB gives himself future tools to take advantage of opportunities - how many times have you wished you had some ill spent money as you wave goodbye at a chance to purchase something you really wanted at a great price? BB is just better at banking than I am. :(

Those are just two ways I see him planning for the future, counting on that Top 10 value he doesn't do, trying to have the tools in place to take advantage if that opportunity pops up? He's all over that.

Having 3 2nd round picks in 2010 (Tennessee will suck in '09, IMO) is enough for me.

Looking forward to seeing an improved secondary and Brady on the field in 2009.

We have a lot of flexibility next year with 3 2nd round picks and 1 1st but there is too many questions yet to be answered from this next season of pro and college to even consider moving into top ten next year. Also you have to keep in mind we have a good amount of contracts expiring next year whether or not those are renewed or not will have a big impact.

Plenty of ammunition to secure NT Mount Cody and ILB McClain. 2010 could be a great draft if we get those two.

I'm sure BB wants a top 10 talent next season. Preferably at least 4 of them - one at 32, one at 64, and two more with our additional 2nd round picks.

Lotta ammo in BB's holster to move up for a high pick, top-talent player.
Three second rounders and our 1st is tremendous flexibility.....
BB will do what he always does, trade down and into the next year.
Don't all us draft-junkies deserve to be thrown a bone once a decade?
Come on, BB!!! Give us all a "Holy Sh*t" thrill next year..... Just sayin'

I can't see him trading into the top 10. I don't know if he has ever done that. I can see him moving up if he is a few picks away from a player he wants... but not WAY up. Just a handful of picks (like, from 21 to 16).

I GUARANTEE he will move down and pick up more picks next season.

So many free agents next year to sign. He picked 12 this season so I'm assuming he is hoping some of these picks will surprise. Unfortunately it won't be McKenzie doing any surprising with the acl. Hopefully good depth, but it will be wait and see with the 09 draft class.

I'm thinking he wants to see what happens with the contracts from our players before he decides to go get 1 guy in the top 10. There may be a lot of holes to fill.
