Even with the Browns, Eric Mangini is still cherry-picking Pats castoffs

Amazing..............

Has there been a player we let go he hasn't picked up?

Browns Claim LB
by Adam Caplan of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, April 30, 2009 at 7:43pm ET

The Cleveland Browns were awarded LB Bo Ruud off waivers from the New England Patriots, the Browns announced Thursday. In addition, the Browns announced that they released RB Allen Patrick.

Ruud was a sixth-round draft choice of New England last year and spent his entire rookie season on the Patriots’ injured reserve list. The 6-3, 235-pounder played in 46 games with 33 starts in his career at Nebraska and totaled 216 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 25 stops for loss. He also intercepted five passes, three of which he returned for touchdowns, tying a school record.

Ruud's experience practicing in a 3-4 defensive scheme should help him win a roster spot with the Browns this season.

Good for Ruud.

Mangini runs almost an identical D as the Pats do, I honestly expect him to pick up at least 2 of your 09 draft picks that don't make the team.

Interesting that the Chiefs didn't bother with him either. That says something to me about Rudd's likely future in the NFL.

Dont worry Ruud wasn't even good enough to make our 80 man roster for training camp. Mangini feel free to pick up the pats garbage.

If Belichick throws away a half-eaten chicken sandwich, will Mangini claim that off waivers too?

We need to pick up the 3 Stoogies and let em go so he can grab them as well. Nothing wrong with picking up some players to make your team better but here's an Idea.... try scouting and drafting some yourself!

He may have claimed him but they don't have to keep him...a few weeks or months and he could be back on the market again.

It's just comical at this point

Ruud was on the Pats 80 man roster. The fact that he was on the PUP and then the IR doesn't change that.

Rather than pointing fingers at Mangini, is it not even more comical that we are so focused on what team picks up Bo Ruud?

It's not Mangini who is being obsessive; that title would belong collectively to us: Pats fans.

As Gunnails pointed out, Mangini runs a similar defense, so it stands to reason he's going to pick up fromer Pats players, if for no other reason than for warm bodies in training camp that will understand the system.

I know it's the off-season, but come on, let's not sensationalize every minor news story - I'd rather leave that to the experts at espn.

The guy was cut prior to training camp. Before his underwear was packed, Mangini had already picked him up, continuing the "get a former Patriot" trend he began in New York. Why you would possibly expect this not to be noticed is quite curious, really.

Almost as curious as your need to question anything I comment on.

Not really, since I do nothing of the kind. But, whatever works for you.

I think its both hilarious and sad the condition that Mangini has that team in currently - it's so bad that a 6th round pick coming off of an injury with no experience at all playing in the NFL, is declared as a front runner to win a roster spot on the Browns.

It's annoying, but it makes sense for Mangini to pick up Patriots defensive players. He runs the same system and because the learning curve is steep in this particular system, why not get a guy that already has a head start? The Browns are gonna need all the help they can get. I predict a 2-14 type of season for them.

Didn't they just cut him? If they cut him from the 80 man roster so they could sign an UDFA, doesn't that mean he couldn't make the 80-man roster?

What am I missing here?
