No it's not the latest Clancy novel, but sounds good,,

Anyway I was hoping for some interior OL help in the draft and this is the guy. Rumours are about how high they are on him, tough, strong.

I find this pick facinating because of what BB went thru to get him,

Were there a lot of "highly ranked" players slipping??
Who were the others? Was it solely Ohrnberger??

So right after they got CB Butler, they got the trade going with Philly?? or did it happen at the tail endf of round 3 / top of round 4??

Seems like something like trading Hobbs would take some up front leg work,, but could it be done on the fly?? Per BB press conference it sounded as a last minute developement.

My understanding from what BB said is that they the thought of trading Hobbs had not crossed their mind prior to draft weekend. That it was Philly that approached them about the deal. I would think that BB would have immediately gotten on the phone about trading into the 4th round for Ohrnberger.

I doubt that, Hobbs said he knew something was up from this quote:
I had been telling my family members for a while I just had a feeling . . . You see how the organization is making moves throughout the offseason. You figure that something is going to shake.

They were planning on moving him for a while, they needed someone to lose out on a CB in the draft and the Patriots offered him at a price that was not so bad for the new team...Philly bit.'

To me what really was the nail in coffin for him with the Patriots was when they drafted both Tate and Butler- two guys who filled his role on the team. They didn't need him then and Philly came along with a need and had a reasonable offer and doesn't play in their division or their conference so they shipped him there.

At least 20 minutes between Hobbs being traded and the trade of their picks...they waited to see who was left on the line before they took Ohrnberger, they knew he wasn't going to stay on the board at 137 and they had a good offer from the Ravens to get up above those they knew would take him...and considering that the Broncos, Chargers, and Titans all took linemen it's easy to assume he would have gone to one of them before the Patriots could get to him.

My own suspicion is Green Bay drafting Lang at 109 was the catalyst to finalize the moves so they could get back into the fourth round for Ohrnberger.

Box, the draft is now over... Slowly step away from those binkies.;)

So, basically you are calling BB a liar because he said that he had no intentions of trading Hobbs over draft weekend.

Except that Butler also returns kicks and Tate is probably going to be on the IR this season.

Good idea checking the other OL draftees

Noticed center Luigs went at 106, and 3 more OL went between 132 and 135. There was an early report on how they were interested in Luigs.

So if the picks are at every 10 minutes, total guess on my part, they had almost 3 hours from Luigs to Ohrnberger, to make the trade.

Is that the time per pick in the fourth round??

Also, only Ohrnberger and Brace were guys we moved up to draft. I think they really wanted some interior line help. Not so sure if Brace was a target, he may have fell into "range", and was too good to pass up.

Money seemed to be a huge player in this draft, in general.

Wait a minute... Bill IS a liar ! That's why we love him. Remember him bragging up those 2-10 in the middle of the season as the Pats steamrolled them ?

Keep on makin' believe BB !

He says stuff so it doesn't come back to bite him in the ass. Not because it's actually true. The truth... you can't handle the truth !

Rounds 3-7 are five minutes, from the time Luigs went at 107 until NE traded with Baltimore for Ohrnberger was two hours.

I haven't read anything I'd hang my hat on as far as when Philly & NE first started discussing a trade involving Hobbs, or who initiated the conversation, but it seems like teams looking for a veteran CB would have started doing their homework after Day One when they looked at their board for the next day. Philly needs insurance if Sheldon Brown holds out, NE just drafted a top CB and already has three long time starters under contract, plus two 2nd year kids who saw starting time as rookies, and Philly is very happy with the starter they got from NE in Free Agency...let's talk.

Those were Hobbs' words, not mine.

Except that Butler also returns kicks and Tate is probably going to be on the IR this season.

One source I'm reading has him being groomed for 2010, which would make sense for them with how many wide receivers they have on the roster.

Adding that not about Butler made my point about him no longer being needed with Butler being a returner. Hobbs had his role filled, he was expendable.

With all these picks, it is really a case of "we will find out". A couple of my draft guides rated him a "priority free agent" type, but I also read something listing him as the number one most underrated offensive lineman in the draft. It will come down to who was correct.

Ohrnsberger is the proverbial head scratcher.

He is undersized, at about 290 lbs, and does not have nearly enough size to play OG in the NFL. Casey Hampton, Jamal Williams and Hoagy Ngata types are going to plow him onto the IR in about two plays. If Orhnsberger plays as a rookie.

Ohrnsberger is technically sound, football intelligent and understands angles and leverage.

Just a hunch, but I think BB grooms the kid as a backup Center who plays OG in times of desperation.

Nope, they were your words. Go back and read post #3. See what statement you were responding to, and how you responded to it. I was also surpised that you would discount what BB said because Hobbs said he had a feeling.

A Philly beat writer said Philly opened talks because the draft didn't fall right for them to draft a CB, a position of need for them.

I read what Hobbs said after the fact, and he may have had a feeling he wasd going to go away, but nowhere does he say he was in on trade talks. He had a feeling.

Sorry, sneaky as BB is, I have to believe him and the Philly beat writer on this. I doubt there were trade talks before hand.

You can dismiss Hobbs sensing something was up, I won't. I don't believe a word that comes out of BB's mouth about any moves, they are never the whole truth especially when it is contradicted by the words of one of his players.

If it wasn't Philly it could have been someone else with a better offer(higher picks?) but Philly was the one that came along with the right combo after things were already set in motion beforehand.

.

Mankins: 6'4, 310
Neal: 6'4, 305
Orhnberger: 6'2, 297

Other than being a little shorter, I don't see a whole lot of difference there. He's denser than the other two. IIRC, Neal was only about 285 when the Pats started trying him out.

I think Ohrnberger will be used in a Russ Hochstein like way--as a top interior reserve. He obviously fits their physical profile, as he is just a few inches shorter than those guys. If his arms are long enough, he can play on the interior. He also has a pedigree as an award winner playing in a conference known for offensive line play. I can see him being groomed to be Koppen's replacement, a solid backup at 3 spots who could start if he develops properly.

I found this selection facinating for several reasons,,

Last year without a decent back-up for Neal the OL was terrible, Koppen got destoyed by the big NGs in this league, we definately needed some help. Eeek, Why are we waiting till the fourth round???
(Is Johnson that player, maybe.)

I was hoping for one of the power centers, Mack or Wood. Makes me wonder if either were there at 40, we could have gone for one of them?? ((Cudda, wudda, shudda been Brace and a center and Hobbs is still here))

Anyways, seems like you all have figured out the trade,,in that Philly instigated it , probably Sat nite. BB had that option during the Sunday picks to see if it was worth picking another player,

So this "unkown" 4th round pick in BB's eyes is worth more to the Pats than an experienced player that has produced and laid it all out the for the team for last few years.

Can this guy back-up Neal, more power than Koppen??

Interesting,,

Interesting,,

He's not a huge guy, he probably has problems with bull rushers who outweigh him by 40 pounds too....he was projected as an UDFA by many, so this guy better be good or they really screwed up.

I read a NFL blurb that said Philly started it...
