According to Profootballtalk, Denver is reportedly looking for only a 7th round pick for Moss, the 17th pick in the 2007 draft:

ProFootballTalk.com - Broncos Declaring Defeat On Jarvis Moss

Moss is 6'" 260# with nice speed and a terrific first step. Coming out in 2007 he had a 4.7 40 with a 1.52 second 10 yard split, 4.18 short shuttle, and 7.06 3-cone. He has nice speed in pursuit, is quick coming off the edge, and is good at getting his hands up to clog passing lanes. He's had only 3.5 sacks at DE for Denver in 2 years, and taking on blockers is not his strength.

I'm not saying this kid is ideal, but he had a lot of talent coming out of Florida, is young, and the reported price is cheap. Possibly worth a look? I'd personally take him over TBC as competition for Crable and Redd. He has the length and the speed.

Sorry, typo: that's 6'6" and 260#.

His contract was 5/15M I'm not sure about the breakdown but I don't see us paying him 3M. As a FA if they dump him for a minimum contract then there's no risk.

Younger and cheaper than Julius Peppers!

Seriously, I agree his contract may be a bit too much to take on. But I think he's worth a look.

Moss, Jarvis

Year Team Base Salary Sign Bonus Other Bonus Total Salary Cap Value Position
2008 Broncos $ 370,000 $ 500,000 $ 2,090,000 $ 2,460,000 $ 1,600,000 DE
2007 Broncos $ 285,000 $ 500,000 $ 3,025,000 $ 1,700,000 $ 1,300,000 DE

so by my calc what is left is 3 years 6.7 million. So is he worth $2.2 mill/year

He's not worth it to Denver, which is something that should be a red flag here.

If McDaniels is shopping him for a 7th, what do you think that says to the Patriots?

vrabel wasn't worth it to the steelers........phifer wasn't' worth it to the jets.....harrison wasn't worth it to the chargers.......moss wasn't worth it to the raiders.........

Nolan may not want him and with Ayers in, Moss is out. Maybe they'll release him......

It seems not uncommon for a new regime to dump players drafted by the old one. Denver traded up to get Moss at #17 just 2 years ago. He's young and was considered raw but very talented coming out of Florida, and was compared to Javon Kearse when he came out. He may not have done much in 2 years, but that seems kind of fast to give up on the kid altogether. The low price suggests one of 2 things: (1) either Denver is convinced he is a total dud and was a complete waste of a pick; or (2) McDaniels and Nolan have decided they want to go in a different direction and that he has no place in their plans. I think #2 is more likely.

Moss was used exclusively as a 4-3 end for the past 2 years. I think it's interesting that Denver hasn't even bothered to look at him as a 3-4 OLB. It would be different if they tried him out this spring/summer and then tried to trade him cheaply rather than cut him outright if they felt he couldn't cut it. This smells more like McDaniels just wanting to pick his own guys, and Ayers is clearly his guy.

2 years ago, Moss was every bit as hot as Ayers is now. He was a popular pick for the Pats at #24 in 2007 before Denver traded up to get him. How quickly things change.

You don't know that. Perhaps McD thinks that he won't transition.

Ok, McDaniels is trying to install the Pats' defense in Denver and he isn't even willing to give Moss a chance to prove himself in the system when they are defensive player starved. Why would the Pats be interested? Obviously, McDaniels and Mike Nolan don't think he can be converted into an OLB.

Here is Scout Inc.'s take on him:

Moss has ideal dimensions for a defensive end in an even front with length, initial quickness and good acceleration off the edge going for him. He needs to work on his hand use and develop counter moves for when offensive linemen are able to anticipate his first move. He also needs to work on his strength. He has a tendency to get overpowered and out-muscled when tackles get their hands on him. He found out that edge speed alone does not mean instant success in the NFL and will have to work on a bull rush as well as the ability to use multiple moves on the same rush. He is not real quick to recognize blocking schemes and can be slow to recognize the level of the ball versus the run and needs a lot of work in that area as well.

That last highlight line if true tells me he is not going to be a good fit in a read and react defense like the Pats.

My take:

Move along, there is nothing to see here.

It's likely because Elvis Dumervil is a much better player and much cheaper. He may be as short as a tailback, but he can flat out ball. He's going to be a stud OLB for that team and they are trying to vacate the position. It's also likely due to Jarvis Moss being too stiff to play out of the two point.

When could McDaniels have looked at him? Teams haven't reported yet. They may have glotten a glimpse of him at "voluntary workouts" but they certainly haven't put on the pads and had contact yet. All I'm saying is that they can't have given him anything more than a cursory look at OLB as the basis for their decision.

And on each occasion, that was a red flag.

I'm not sure I see Elvis Dumervil as a stud OLB. Time will tell.

It's quite possible that Jarvis Moss is too stiff to play out of the 2 point. It's also possible that he isn't adept another at taking on blockers or handling the point of attack. It's also possible that he's too slow to read and react. All of those things are also true of Everette Brown, Brian Orapko, Aaron Maybin and all of the other 3-4 OLB conversion prospects in this past draft.

Whatever else, Moss is a young kid with terrific length, size and speed and good pass rushing capabilities. There aren't too many 6'6" 4.65 guys out there, as a starting point. He may very well not be worth signing. All I'm saying is that he may merit BB and company taking a look at him for themselves before making a decision.

I agree, all this for a 7th rd pick.
Risk/Reward is worth it.

Not bad when you consider we cut 4th,5th, and 6th rounders around here on a usual basis
