This link is for the USA Today's version of NFL quarterbacks, sorted in order of CAP hit. Once there, you can resort based on 2008 salary.

Last year Matt Ryan was drafted third and got a 6 year, $72 million contract ($34 million guaranteed). Sanchez, at 5th, will probably get something a little less than that from the Jets, but not much.

Where would you rate Sanchez in this list, in terms of value, over the next few years? How many QB's would select from this list rather than him, given the ratio of cost to probably performance?

And I know, we are all just projecting his performance.

Sanchez isn't going to be decent for a few years so his contract is horrible value.

Players overpaid:
Carson Palmer
Eli Manning
Jake Delhomme
JaMarcus Russell

Players underpaid or great value:
Aaron Rodgers
Kyle Orton
Jason Campbell

I'd have to say the most outrageously overpaid QB list should include Marc Bulger and David Garrard. They both make more than Drew Brees - so I'd add him to a great value list for the Saints - though I guess it's more likely he's just appropriately paid, and that it looks like value because of the overpaid albatrosses out there.

Problems with this statement

(1) How can Eli Manning possibly be underpaid. He won his team a super Bowl. Yes, he wasnt great but good enough to justify his salary
(2) Carson Palmer, in my opinion, is a great QB. He has been injured. I am fairly confident there are about 15 teams would do anything to pay Carson Palmer that much to be on their team
(3) I agree with Delhomme and Russel
(4) I could not disagree more about saying Kyle Orton and Jason Campbell are great value/underpaid. They are horrible quarterbacks. Absolutely terrible. Aaron Rodgers, maybe he's ok, so I agree that he is a great value.

I stopped reading right there....

actually he was in the grasp, the refs made that moment "great" for Eli.

Agreed. I wouldn't be able to sit and do my desk job with some of the injuries that guy has suffered, let alone play a physically demanding sport. When he's healthy, he earns every penny.

im sorry, but a close call on one play does not justify any of us discounting the fact that the final score gave the giants the victory. did anyone go through the entire super bowl and count the should-have-been penalties against the patriots? it's just bitter grapes at this point.

as far as sanchez is concerned, his unjustified to-be salary is just a result of the flaws of the overall system. there needs to be a limit on rookie contracts in the top ten, period. the sooner they get that done, the better the draft will be.

sanchez would have to win a super bowl in his first contract to be worth it. i seriously doubt he'll ever be worth the amount of money the jets pay him.

I know he makes alot of money as is but the most underpaid is Brady. What he has done with the franchise is unfathomable. If you can put a price tag on brady he should be making like 25-30 mil a year. If you think that A-rod can make that much, Brady should make more. He is the man.

Dirty Sanchez will be a bust!!!

I agree with a lot of the players you listed, but you really can't judge whether a player is overpaid or underpaid based on a one year snapshot of their salary and cap hit. I can judge a lot of these players based on their overall deal.

Aaron Rodgers deal puts him pretty high on the list of compensation. He is just in the second year of his deal so his base salary and cap hit are still low. Eli is at the tail end of his deal where his base salary and cap hit will be at their highest. The guy won a Super Bowl so eventhough I agree he is overpaid, I bet Giants fans feel they got their money worth.
