I will now refer to mark sanchez as the dirty sanchez

Yeah, Sanchez at NYJ.

i feel sorry for you guys now. Mark Sanchez is going towards a great career and in the same division as the Patriots. Looks like it will no longer just be us as a rival but now the Jets even more.

Hurrah!

This really diminishes the effects
of their otherwise-excellent offseason.

Early nomination for either BEST SARCASM or BIGGEST A-HAT COMMENT of Draft Day!

Sanchez will be fun to root against, at least.

I was hoping the Jets traded up for him. I live in LA and see every USC game. Sanchez is not a great QB. There was still a ton of talent on that offense and he had a very good line to throw behind - all of which made him look better than he was. To take him number 5 overall is a huge stretch imo. The guy doesn't have a huge arm and a lot of alumni didn't even want him to start after putting up some bad games early on. Heck, even Carroll didn't think he was ready for the NFL.

And as for his "character"? I guess people forget that he was arrested for sexual assualt. Charges were dropped after it became a he said - she said case. The guy is known to be another Leinart "party boy" type as well.

People say that every year.

We'll know in 2-3 years if this was a good trade for the JEST... right now I'm laughing my ***** off.

16 game starter will get mentored by future HOF Kellen Clemens  The dirty Sanchez is a good nickname for the amount of times he's going to hit the dirt. I can't wait to see what the NY media does to this guy.

He's a great kid, has said all the right things and has a great work ethic. I wanted him before the draft, every time he speaks he has shown charisma yet sounds grounded. We will see in 3 yrs what happens

As I posted in another thread....

my 2 cents...Re: Sanchez & Jests going 'all in'

As other poster very well put it - going 'all in' would have been more appropriate for getting Cutler. Sanchez could very well start - considering the level of QB competition he will face. But we know how rookie QB's typically fare. Luckily he will have a good OL to protect him. But still the questions are:

1) Does he have the arm strength for those weather /wind conditions at that stadium?

2) Can he handle the pressure of NFL and NY media. I know many already thing he can - but USC played from ahead most games so what pressure is that -and with UCS's defense...(which conveniently segways into...

3) Jets Defense. Yes I think it will be improving - but they have to adapt and learn a new scheme. Plus they don't have anywhere close to the talent level of Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terrel Suggs, Nagiota, etc. We hear all the time about these hot shot 'defensive genius' coaches (Marvin Lewis, Mike Noland, etc. ) and when they leave the team with the talent - that is it. THe genius of BB is knowing how to get the talent to match the scheme. Ryan has had only one offseason and limited cap space to do this.

3) which brings us to the Jets recent drafts.
2009: 3 players
2008: 6 players
2007: 4 players

Where is the team building /developing & molding players for the future? Oh, right - they all were traded or FA to Cleveland along with Mangina. Jets are paper thin on depth and when injuries and the wearing down of vets occur in Nov / Dec - the Jests will fold like a cheap paper plate.

4) "Jests got a steal in Sanchez and gave up very little" say all the national 'talking heads'- except
a) some of that depth in point 3. They sent (lost) 3 players to CLE as part of the draft pick deal and drafted 3 players in the draft. Net sum gain = 0

b) took on a 5th pick rookie contract instead of a 17th pick contract.
2008
5. Glenn Dorsey, Kansas City Chiefs - 5 years, $51 million ($23 million guaranteed) VS.
17. Gosder Cherilus - Detroit Lions - 5 years, $15 million ($8.9 million guaranteed)

Plus as he is a starter QB and has all the leverage - you can expect close to pick 3 (last year) Matt Ryan dollars which was:
3. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons - 6 years, $72 million ($34 million guaranteed)

which leads to..
5) Having alot of $$$ tied up in high draft picks Gholston and now Sanchez. Not too mention the big FA draft spree 1 year ago with big contracts to Fanaca, Calvin Pace, our old friend Damon Woody, etc.
Jests are becoming the Colts of the AFC East with having a very top heavy (capwise) team with little depth. At least the Colts usually draft well.

I don't like this move for the Jets - I LOVE it. They had a decent STARTING QB 2 years ago in Pennington - threw him under the bus -because he has a weak arm (does Sanchez have a rocket arm? - No!). Then not walked but ran to be close to his lordship Sir Favre. And there was great rejoicing- Yeah! Ooops - we forgot to watch tape of him the last 3 years.

Now have to gamble it all on one roll of the craps dice to hopefully come up lucky '7' on the new one year boywonder from Southern Cal - or they are screwed. (in a very weak 2009 QB class no less)

Oh and I almost forgot the best- who is this California BoyWonder going to throw the ball to ? Jests must be California Dreamin because they forgot to check the depth chart before the draft.

Tannenbaum is desperate and instead of team building is just trying to get some big spash player to sell the expensive PSL for the stadium. It is all or nothing for the franchaise for the next 3-4 years for this 'great' move in trading up.

And I know as a Pats fan - I am sure the Patriot players (Seymore, AD, ) are just waiting to give Sanchez a nice big warm welcome to the NFL Sept 20.

P.S. David Carr, Joey Harrington, Alkai Smith, Brian Griese, Byron Leftwich, Alex Smith, Vince Young, etc.....say hi

Excellent post. The choice of Sanchez was just as much a desperate ploy to sell PSLs via "the big splash" as it was to actually improve the Green Beans. You've got to wonder how he will grow and improve in years to come with things disintegrating around him. This team lacks depth and a solid foundation for the future. Add the Tubby Wrecks "X" factor and you can't have much faith that coaching will pull things through. Sanchez is the second coming of Opie Pennington.

Bottom line for the Green Beans: Poor ownership, and a GM who lacks the balls to educate him on how best to mold a franchise. (Assuming Tannen-bomb actually has a clue, which he hasn't demonstrated so far.)

Thanks for the feedback. I don't post so often as don't have the time for flame wars with fans (even our own) that are an egg short of a dozen.
I agree wholeheartedly what you said about Tannenbaum and the incompetance. First with the Favre thing and now trading the whole draft for 2 'headline' players (when already stocked at RB but no one at WR to catch the ball). You can get away with trading many picks for 1 or 2 players - but they have done that too many years in a row and now have to scrape up JAGs faster than roadkill at a busy highway diner.

I am sure a few of our camp cuts will make it onto their team or PS.

I think Woody is a good owner, under his ownership the Jets have become a top 5 (#5 I think) revenue producing team, with a new stadium scheduled to open in 2010. Loans out his private jet and helicopter to help influence FAs, does not meddle with Tannenbaum.

Tannenbaum is far from clueless and with out skills. He has had 4 drafts, D-Brick, Mangold, Revis, Harris, Kellar, and now Sanchez are his first round picks, 5 starters, 2 pro bowlers and a potential franchise QB. Not bad. At the same time he has not gotten the Jets much depth in draft, that is a legit concern. Tanny is also very good with the cap and contracts, remember the cap hell all were predicting last year.

How hard is it to make a team in New Jersey, I mean New York, a top 5 profitable team? Is that really an accomplishment?

As a Bills fan, it jsut funny to watch the Jets chase another QB. While the Pats* have had one great QB, the rest of us, besides a 5 year period of Chadwick, have just chased QBs. The only thing special about Sanchez is that he came out in one of the worst years ever for Qbs. If Bradford or perhaps ever Tebow came out, Sanchez may have been the 3rd or 4th Qb in the draft.

Personally, instead of throwing away picks every year on a QB, maybe you should have actually given Clemens or Ratliff a shot & build a team around them. Clemens played on a crappy 4-12 team that had little talent. But alas, and I think to the benefit of the rest of the AFC East, the Jets fell in love with the shiny object. Time will tell I guess.

Bah, nothing but trash talk, Jets have drafted a QB in the first round 5 times in 40 years. last one was Penny at 18, although I would of been fine if they passed on Sanchez.

The most special thing about Sanchez is that he has the It factor, that I know, whether he will be a good NFL QB is yet to be seen.

Not sure about Woody - I don't enough about him to make a valid critique one way or another. But it does seem he doesnt meddle with team which is always a big plus.

As far as Tannenbaum - I completely disagree. He is part of the Jets problem. I give you that he has drafted some good players in the first day (first round especially) - but he does this by 'cherry picking' ie. trading away multiple draft picks to move up to target one player. Sanchez, Shonn Greene, Keller, Revis, Mangold (I believe) and others. Has done this for several years now including this year (so I can see this is his strategy and not Manginis).

'Cherry picking' the creme of the crop makes you look good as you land that 'WOW' player. It also gives you a better success ratio on hits VS. busts as the high round draft picks have a lower washout factor than lower round picks.

However, there is several problems with this strategy- especially when this is done year after year:
1) You are paying higher (labor) costs for those players (instead of letting the draft come to you),
2) you are sacrifycing draft picks (the cheapest building blocks of your team long term),
3) you had better be spot on on that player you targeted LONG TERM. When you change head coaches every 3-4 years, is that player going to fit into the new HC's schemes?
4) where are the other players going to come from to fill out your roster? off other teams practice squads and street free agents?
5) is your team only 1-2 players away from the next big step in its deveopment? If NO, then maybe not worth the sacrifice of all the other points outlined above (and my previous post about Jets now being a very top heavy Cap team like the Colts. But the Colts draft well year after year and don't have small drafts by trading away 1/3 of their draft picks each year.

Plus adding the fact of big free agent splurges on marquee players on the downsides of their career and you set yourself up for failure. Where is the young talent to learn from the old vets who are decreasing in skill (when you trade away your draft for 1-2 players). A team is 53 players. And you better have not only a marquee QB but some good WR and RB and OL. What is the point of a good QB when your WR'ers can't get separation and therefore the QB must scramble or hold the ball too long.

Show me where Tannenbaum trades down - and picks up a good player as well as pockets a few extra picks in that draft. Show me where he trades out of the draft for a next year pick and thereby moving up a round which increases that picks value (in next years draft).

It is all about TEAM building not about getting just the next 'star' player to sell jerseys and PSL for the stadium. Oh wait - in Jetsland it IS about that (Favre) and now Sanchez. If Sanchez doesn't have a strong set of supporting cast - he will fail simple as that. It happens time and again, year in and year out. (Carr, Harrington, Jason Cambell, Kyle Boller, Alex Smith, Byron Leftwhich, Alkai Smith, Ryan Leaf, on and on. ) All of those QB had 'IT' when they came out of school and were chosen in the first round. And many of those had a stronger arm and more years starting experience in school than Sanchez - and yet they still couldn't make it let alone carry a team (which one must do if you are paper thin in depth). Being top heavy in talent (not to mention cap) - means that the inevitable injuries to starters leave you in a very vunerable position (as few capable backups). So the starter is rushed back into the mix before their bodies are healed. They dont play up to their talent level (as they are still hurt) and the chance of re-injury is multiplied.

As a Pats fan, I am HAPPY the Jests mortgaged your future and rest of your draft (once again) on just one player or 2 to 'save the franchaise'. But in a physical team sport where injuries and depth play a crucial component to winning, it just doesnt work that way. Maybe in basketball where there are only 5 starters. A MJ or Bird or Lebron can carry a team on his shoulders. But in football - the ultimate team sport - only future HOF'ers can possibly do that.

Sunydenmark, thank you for your well thought out response.

The IT factor = the guy that walks into the room and everybody turns to see him, think of Elvis, Sinatra, or even Joe Namath, It's a cult of personality.

Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, Jason Cambel, etc never had IT.

The IT thing has nothing to do with arm strength, ability to read a D, or athleticism, IT is what makes people want to follow you into battle.
