Re: Pats get more props on draft.

Nice. Thanks for posting this.

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

I guess KFFL liked what the Pats did this past weekend.

- The Patriots easily had the best draft of all and didn't even use a first-round pick!
- It never hurts to gain two second-round picks in 2010 along the way, either.
- The best draft of all; Chung Brace and Butler excellent picks. Tate, Meredith good choices - plus two 2nd rounders next year.

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

I guess mentioning that we got two 2nd rounders next year twice was for affect. :p

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

I cannot for the life of me find out what picks the Pats have next year. Didn't we trade our 1st to Baltimore? What did we get for that pick? Does anyone have a list of our current picks for 2010?

We received the 2nd rounders from Jacksonville and Tennessee.

We will have our assigned picks + two 2 rounders.

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

NCPatriot......We traded our 1st round #23 to Baltimore for there first roung #26 and a fifth round pick. Then we traded #26 to GB for there 2nd round pick #41 and 2 third round picks. Then we traded 2 of the third round picks for
2nd round picks in 2010. So we have 1 1st and 3 2nd's for next year plus our picks in the other rounds.

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how did we get 2 2nds (Titans and Jags) and gave up our first to the Ravens? 3 way trade? It seemed like every time I looked at the board we were moving down. Just seems like we should have had more to show than 2 2nds considering we traded out of the first round with 2 trades.

Picked up a couple of thirds from the Packers plus their second pick

when they traded out of the first round. This gave the Pats four third

round picks. The Pats traded two of the third rounders for second

rounders next year.

They still have the 2010 first rounder, the 26th pick and a fifth round pick was traded to Green Bay in exchange for a 2nd round pick(#41, Butler), a third round pick(#72) and a third round pick(#83, Tate). The team then traded the third round pick at #72 to the Jaguars for a 2nd round pick in 2010 and a 7th round pick in 2009(#232, Richard)

The Pats went into the draft with 11 picks including one 1st, three 2nd and two 3rd picks. The Pats finished the draft picking 12, no 1sts, FOUR 2nd, two 3rd, and an additional two 2nd rounders next year. Considering that at least two of our second round players we netted are considered steals, I'd say that this was a very good draft... when looking at initial value.

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

Got it, thanks for the clarification

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

Trades in order of appearance, no wisecracks.

1. Pats trade 23 to Ravens for 26 and 162
2. Pats trade 26 and 162 to Packers for 41 (Butler), 73, and 83 (Tate.)
2a. (see below) Pats trade 73 to Jags for 232 (Edelman) and a 2 in 2010

- Ultimately for #23, we get Butler, Tate, Edelman, and a 2nd in 2010.

3. Trade-up to get Ron Brace. Pats trade 47, 124, 199 to Raiders, for 40.

We get Brace, who evidently was targeted and we feared would fall elsewhere. We swap 2nds, and give up 124 and 199 (a 4th and a 6th.)

4. 2a - the trade with the Jags. A third (#73) for #232 plus a 2 in 2010. More or less a double quarter pounder in 2010 for a hamburger today. Happens all the time though. It's the big luxury of being "rich": You aren't desperate now, and someone else always is... the pick NOW is worth a way, way higher pick next year.

5. Pats trade Pick 89 (third) for a second in 2010. See 4 above.

6. Pats trade Ellis Hobbs to Eagles so Samuel isn't lonely, receive two 5ths (137 and 141), which become a 4th and a 6th rounder (see below)

7. Pats trade #137 and #141 to Ravens for #123 (Ohrnberger) and #198 (Jake Ingram)

Ohrnberger was targeted. Obviously the Pats felt Ingram could be had sometime way low in the draft, and 198 is where he fit in their scheme of things.

So yeah, we did what we usually do, getting some 2010 picks while we're checking off the items we want. You have to believe Brace was in danger of falling too early, and he was either targeted, or the last of a targeted value group, so the trade was necessary. You have to believe that having given up 199 to the Raiders, the Pats felt they needed something in that neighborhood because that's where their new longsnapper would go. I personally think Hobbs was a money/expendability move but gave us the ammo to do the deals.

So what we got for our 1 might not look like an amazing haul (a bunch of picks this year, a second next year.) But remember a lot of guys had us picking Butler at 23. So we moved down from 23 to 41, 18 spots. We got Butler, obviously the guy we wanted but at a lower value than our 23. We got Tate to go with. We got a 2010 second rounder. Oh yeah, and we got Brace. Don't talk to me about Edelman... they must have liked him pretty well as a late round guy but he sure wasn't anybody's pet project.

I think that kind of rounds it up.

As I said I think in terms of drafts that in general, "it is what it is." As always the Pats treat picks like currency. There are some guys with a Red/Silver/Blue bullseye on their foreheads like Brace and Butler (I think.) Other guys it's sort of a best-bang-for-the-buck approach. Some guys go out blind to a store, not knowing what they specialize in, with a list the wife made. So they get meat that's close to expiration date at a place that's basically a discount mart, then move over to the gourmet store and pay 100 bucks for sandwich fixins. Other guys check out the store, see what looks good at a good price that particular day, and swap some coupons around when they realize they don't really have any need for light mayo (not to be confused with Light or Mayo.) I hope the point's taken. I fear it fell apart when I attempted to explain the draft in terms of how to grocery-shop for one's wife, proving myself a colossal wuss. But she messed up her leg, okay?

Hopefully this will clear it up:

Pats traded #1.23 to Ravens for #1.26 and #5.162
Pats later trade both picks
Note the Pats still had a first round pick

Pats trade #1.26 and #5.162 to Packers for #2.41, #3.73 and #3.83
Pats pick CB Darius Butler at 2.41, WR Brandon Tate at 3.83 and trade 3.73 to Jacksonville for a 2nd in 2009
Note the Pats are now out of the 1st round but have moved up from the 5th to two additional 3rds

Pats had previously acquired #2.47 in 2008 trade to Chargers for their #3.69 2007 pick
This pick is used later in a trade to acquire DL Ron Brace at #40:

Pats trade #2.47, #4.124 and #6.199 to the Raiders for #2.40
Pats pick DL Ron Brace at 2.40

Pats trade #3.73 to the Jaguars for a 2010 2nd and #7.232
Pats pick WR/QB Kent Edelman at #7.232
Note this is the first of two additional 2010 2nd round picks

Pats trade #3.89 (3rd) to the Titans for a 2010 2nd
Note this is the second of two additional 2010 2nd round picks

Pats trade CB Ellis Hobbs to the Eagles for #5.137 and #5.141

Pats trade #5.137 and #5.141 to Ravens for #4.123 and #6.198
Pats pick OG Rich Ohrnberger and LS/DT Jake Ingram

edit, looks like others beat me to it, sorry for the double post

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

The only trade I didn't like was giving up a high 4th(124) and a 6th(199) just to move up 6 spots essentially since we already had 41.

Getting 2nds from Jax and Ten was highway robbery considering there's a good chance they'll both be middle of the pack at best next year.

BB explained it as they wanted Brace and Butler, and didn't feel both would be around at 47. So they traded two picks that have low success rates (historically) for a guy they liked.

well, we used a bunch of second rounders this year. Chung, Brace, Vollmer, Butler.

Re: Pats get more props on draft.

I think they did some manuevering that's worthy of attention, mainly getting both their high seconds. They seem to have gotten one of them way lower than people assumed they'd go for, but kept an eye on what was falling, who had which need, etc., and calculated both the high 2s would be available at those spots. Then they traded up to lock down the second of the two.

Probably they were entertaining other offers when time expired on 40 but decided not to press their luck.

$124 is not a high fourth. It is near the very bottom (28th pick of the round).

We got #40, not #41. We had #47

Trade values:

47 = 430
124 = 48
199 = 12.8

500 = 40

We gave up 500 trade 'points' and received 490.8 points in return. That's about as close as you are going to get it.

Getting 2nds from Jax and Ten was highway robbery considering there's a good chance they'll both be middle of the pack at best next year.
Well, it is standard if you trade a pick this year for a following year pick, you get a pick one round lower. We gave up a pick at the top of the third round ( #73) and the bottom of the third round (#89).

It seems equitable on the surface. The bad part of the trade becomes apparent when you realize that our picks will be better if the Titans and Jags lose both their division games to the Colts ... Go Peyton!!!!!
