This is really worth highlighting as an example of Patriot excellence. EVERY commentator and media analysis of Tyrone McKenzie had rated him DOWN because of having transferred twice. It was seen as a sign of instability and/or immaturity. I read two evaluations that said he would be a second round pick if he'd stayed at a single school.

Rather than just make that superficial and quick assessment, the Pats interpreted this 180 degrees differently:

“I would just say of all the players that I’ve talked to and we’ve interviewed this year and even through the years, that Tyrone is amongst the most impressive,” said Belichick, who took him with the 97th overall pick. “Maturity, intelligence, what he’s done with the opportunities that he’s had or that he’s had to overcome, how he’s approached them, how he’s dealt with them, how he’s made the most of them.

“It hasn’t been easy. Yet, he’s continued to excel, jump over hurdles and overcome obstacles that I think would have derailed a lot of other people and/or football players. I think he’s a very impressive, mature, humble young man.”

Good point. But I think you must mean the media analysis as opposed to team analysis. I don't think BB would have jumped at McKenzie in the third if he wasn't afraid of the possibility that other teams were on to him as well.

If you listen to the post-draft conference call on the patriots website, you'll come away with the same feeling about him. He sounds like BB described him: a thoughtful, mature, intelligent guy who has adapted to adverse situations and played productive football everywhere he's been. In short...a "Patriot"

There's an angle I had not thought about.

This was the way I looked at it. If he has picked up three different defensive systems (all DC have their own philosophy) and excelled then for him to come in and pick up our complicated system might not be too hard. Again I am getting excited about his pickup the more I do my homework on this kid. Before we got him I though he would excel in a 4-3 but after do more research he can be versatile enough to play inside and out for us.

Tyrone Mackenzie is going to be a good ILB reserve and near starter. Think of him like James Sanders. Not quite big enough, or talented enough, or fast enough, to be a clear cut starter. But still a valuable addition to the team.

His 4.8+ speed doesn't compare to Mayo 4.55 or Guyton's 4.50. they are the starters.
