Who needs a good belly laugh? Brad Childress

It was Garrett Mills, but I can't remember the exact problem between BB and Childress.

Last one...

Mills was originally a fourth-round pick by the Patriots last season did not play and finished the season on injured reserve with a thigh injury. Bill Belichick was hoping to sneak Mills through waivers to keep him on the practice squad, but the Vikings foiled their plans in claiming him.

In fact, Belichick even reportedly called Vikings coach Brad Childress to try and talk him out of claiming Mills, but to no avail.

Did anyone see Childress on ESPN sat? He was giving an interview about why they chose Harvin.

Childress was asked about his vetting process of Harvin. His reply I went down there sat with his family & looked him in the eye. He went on to say one of the things he likes about Harvin is "he has a great smile"

I'm not making this up!

I don't see any problem with Childress doing that... the waiver wire works the way it does for a reason: so good teams (like the Pats) can't stash players off the roster.

Wasn't Childress still the QB coach for Philly when they lost the superbowl?

OC, in fact.

FWIW, though, the border war apparently goes back before Mills: remember the 2006 drubbing @Minnesota? (That was the game where the Patriots actually did provide the blueprint for beating the Vikings D—just throw over them!)

That was also the game where the Patriots forced a three-and-out by sacking Brooks Bollinger on three consecutive downs.

That's really funny. After the first round, I thought there was only one team worthy of an "F". I mean, the bottom line is we don't really know how these players will turn out... they are still young and none of them have played in the NFL with all the pressures and the speed of the game. So why does Minnesota get an "F"? They made their pick about one minute into their allotted time slot. What on earth could you be thinking? You are so arrogant with your below average team that you don't even want to listen to other offers? How did they know that, within the next nine minutes, a team wouldn't call them and offer them a really sweet deal? You spend months and months evaluating value and these investments are for millions of dollars. Minnesota stood out to me as the only team arrogant enough to think they had stolen a player, with the impatience of knowing they had won with this guy, and not even entertained late, desperate offers. In contrast, the Patriots rand the clock down every time to leverage great value in next year's draft and got two extra second rounders without giving up a second in return.

As far as Harvin, Pro Football Talk reported yesterday that he had "worn out his welcome" in Florida. How many times does a National Champion football team look back and say "I hope this guy isn't with us next year" when referring to a star receiver? My guess is Harvin is one of the biggest prima donnas in the draft, and I was glad the Vikings chose him, as the Pats had most of the guys I wanted available (although they passed.) I didn't want to see Chad Jackson II on this roster. Meanwhile, Bill Parcells told Darius Butler he would draft him in round one. The draft is full of ruses, broken promises, and changes of philosophy based on more information, contract value (Stafford's deal inflated everyone's salary), etc. Childress is obviously a chump for drafting a guy without fielding other offers, and a bigger chump for trying to thump his chest at a guy who is re-writing the book on how to play the draft.

I like the Chung, Butler, Brace picks, but Harvin is a game changer who could have been the next Kevin Faulk for us.

It's probably true but it is ******ed of Childress to say that this was a cat and mouse game.

If the Patriots coveted Harvin to that degree then they would have seen the value in trading for him over other teams that clearly needed a WR.

It's hardly a MASTERFUL STROKE OF A MASTERMIND OF FOOTBALL MASTERY to pick ahead of another team.

Looks to me like Childress got played like a stradivarius. Not only does he not realize it, but he actually believes he outsmarted Belichick. Self confidence is one thing, but that is flat out delusional.

"New England was right in there. They were right behind us [with the 23rd pick]," Childress said. "No, they didn't think we'd take him [because of off-the-field] issues. Remember, they have our receivers coach there now. So they thought they could hold ... and he'd come to them.

Okay Brad, if that makes you feel better about yourself, you just go on and believe it.

The Patriots worked out Harvin the day after Vikings coach Brad Childress visited him and indicated to Harvin they would draft him.

pats say that to everyone .doesnt mean they would take him or take him in the first round.
somehwow childress always mentions BB or Pats even when they are not connected.now he throws it out there that pats have their receivers coach -the key to our success

See, I thought the Vikings would take Harvin, and I'm not as expert in this as Belichick. If some relative nobody on a message board could figure it out, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that BB probably had a notion that it could happen.

We did also take Tate, but that was in the 3rd round, not the 1st. No doubt we would have taken Harvin at 34 if he was there some how though.

Nope. I really doubt that. Patrick Chung was our target. D was a huge priority in this year's draft. We took 3 defensive picks in a row to get it started. We get someone who may be as talented as Harvin with a bit of an MJ issue in round 3. That's much better value than Harvin in round 1. From what I've heard Harvin has some TO ego type issues in addition to the drugs.

It's especially frustrating seeing as how badly we are struggling at WR right now. Then again, if we had Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosencopter it would have merely been a luxury addition for us.

I liked this comment:

Don't know where you get your stats but according to ESPN "Rand Moss with 4.25 speed in the 40 and a 39-inch vertical leap." But I do laugh at the idiots out there compairing Percy to The Freak. If Harvin and Moss had a 100 yard race Moss would leave him 20 yards behind. Laughing all the way. You are correct about Harvin being a gimmick player and Chilly will not have a clue how to use him.

And this one:

God I hope nobody outside this state reads this article. Makes us look like bush league idiots. Want to know why the rest of the nation cracks on us for our intelligence and naivity? Why Hollywood makes movies like Fargo? Because of the moronic drivel spewed by Sid, Chilly, and a large number of my fellow fans. How amateur is it that our goals revolve around outsmarting Belichek (an AFC coach) and winning a "division title". Yep. I'm willing to bet the Pats organization wishes they could be just like us. They need to start by throwing away their championships then. As for the cat and mouse game, there was an article on the Trib site just last week stating that Professor Chilly was visiting this dope-head. The only team to show their hand worse was Detroit, and that's because they owned the top pick and signed Stafford before the draft. God Chilly is an idiot. Harvin would have fallen to the 2nd round (most likely to us) and my guess is that Reid and Belichick baited Chilly into a reach. dumb dumb dumb. And we are idiots for constantly eating this crap.

As talented as Harvin? Tate? Not a chance in Hell. Tate was a kick returner in college, he didn't even start at WR.

2-3 years ago (the same season we played Minny in Minny) before the season, BB set Childress on fire for some FA transactional move on a player whom I forgot. It was a big to-do for Childress at the time and he complained bitterly during some preseason press conference.

I think it all started there. I'm not sure who the player was, or whether it had to do with an oral agreement to make a trade, etc. Anyone remember?

Garrett Mills

WHa? Wha?

Tate was their best starting receiver. He was considered the go-to guy. Better than Hakeem Nicks. He was featured early in the season as the big threat on that team.

I'd rather have Tate for a 3rd than expend a 1st round pick on Harvin. With guys like Moss, Welker, and Galloway as the Pats starting WR trio, getting a versatile and talented young WR who can also return kicks for DEPTH is a better fit than expending a 1st round pick on a guy who does nothing to improve the Pats defense. And Tate WAS considered a very good WR prospect until he came down with injury in his senior season.

And I'm not even going to get into the Florida WR bust pattern, since I'm sure that doesn't factor into your evaluation of Harvin. To me Harvin isn't even really a receiver, he's a poor man's Reggie Bush and should be used in the manner that the Saints use Bush.

With his 16 receptions for 376 yards as a senior? OR his 25 receptions for 475 yards as a junior?

Before getting hurt Tate averaged 75.2 YPG receiving. Harvin (in the games he played) averaged 58.5. Harvin had all his running too, but you're talking about receiving here. Of course I would take Harvin over Tate given the ACL injury but I like Tate in the 3rd over Harvin in the 1st and if Tate hadn't hurt his ACL there's a really good chance he'd have been drafted ahead of Harvin.
