Have at it, gentlemen! My contribution: Hey, we didn't know who Logan Mankins was, either!

It's not that big of a shock. Certainly not a Michael Mitchell type. He's a reach and it's unfortunate that he's already 24, but the guy has skills. He'll probably need a year to get coached up, but they compared him to Michael Roos. Which is fine by me!

I love him already.

He's now my adopted rookie:D

I watched this mountain play at Houston. First off he is nasty, a true mauler type. He played on the left and right side at Houston but he projects to ROT in the pros.
He has not played the game long so he still has a lot of upside.
As a pass defender, he will struggle with speed rushers but once he gets long arms and his huge hands on an opponent, he usually win, game over. He is almost impossible to bull rush because he does a decent job of sinking his hips for such a huge man.
As a run blocker, he is not a flat backed drive blocker (because he is 6'8" tall), but he is a decent mauler that will blow DE's and DT's off the LOS.
And again he blocks to the last echo of the whistle and is NASTY!!!!!!!
I think that once he gets coached up, Pats fans are going to love the kid.

Does anyone know the official arm length measurement for Vollmer and have a link to it? I've been searching for this tidbit of info.

I'm really seeing a left tackle steal with this guy. He has very quick feet and uses his arms to frustrate speed rushers it seems. I don't see how you could get around him cleanly.

Of course that video is a scrimmage, but i see left tackle tools.

Vollmer is a fine pick. Gosselin had him at #76 in his value chart within about a half round of where he was picked. He was the highest rated player not invited to the combine. Belichick has contacts at Houston and knew all about Vollmer. He is a raw RT.

BTW, for Gosselin bot Brace and Chung were half round reaches, same as Vollmer. Butler was clearly a bargain, a first round talent at 41.

He had an excellent pro day from all reports. 5.1 40, 36.5 vert, 32 reps.

6'8", 36" vert, long arms...Try kicking a 50 yd FG over an 11 foot wall 20 feet in front of you

Played some TE early in college...Goal line TE?

He probably won't see regular tackle snaps until he graduates from Dante's OL School, but he could be a gameday active as a swing tackle and specialist.

This doesn't help as a compliment. It's like saying your the smartest kid that is not in the honors society. Wouldn't you rather be in the middle of the pack of the honors students as opposed to the smartest kid that is not in the society?

I don't question any of this and he very well might develop into a solid starting RT or he might not. Bottom line is that regardless of what he can be, he was taken a tad early don't you think ?

I mean crap, we do have 4 - 3's, do ya think we could have used the last 3 to take this kid.

maybe, maybe not.

I see a lot of this kind of commentary, and I don't understand any of it.
the smart thing to do is to get your guys -- not get them to line up w/some analyst's mock.

let me ask you this:
who is it we should have drafted instead of vollmer, and why can't we use one of our thirds to draft that guy?
you have no idea whether or not we would have gotten him tomorrow.
get your guys.

"Get your guys regardless of whether you can get them much later on in the draft ?" Are you related to Al Davis ?

I guess it's never wise to argue w/a guy who has a crystal ball up his ass.

who should we have taken over vollmer?

Well, with all the ammo and the picks, why not a small trade up for Max Unger or Connor Barwin, don't you find much more value there ? It would only have cost a 5th or 6th to do it. How about the much higher rated Beatty at that point ?

Could not agree more. This is as inexplicable as TRADING UP for Matthew Slater last year. What the F?

"He probably won't see regular tackle snaps until he graduates from Dante's OL School, but he could be a gameday active as a swing tackle and specialist."

Right - so why the F draft him in the 2nd g-damn round???
