Patriots select OL Sebastian Vollmer

Let's hope the Sporting News was wrong about him:

"Vollmer has been a two-year starter for Houston at left tackle, but his NFL prospects look slim. He lacks athleticism, flexibility and the lateral mobility to recover well. He also plays top-heavy, lacks strength, and ends up on the ground or getting beat quite often. The best Vollmer can hope for is to be brought in as a training camp body because of his tremendous size."

For a tall guy Vollmer has rather short and stout legs ... Belichick had to be drooling when he saw this. Had to be ... :rolleyes2::rolleyes2::rolleyes2: no, Bill was drooling ... good pick. Some say it was too high ... then again Bill had to know that perhaps Pioli was eyeing Vollmer ?:confused2:

Oh ... I forgot ... he can play TE

There's hope because the SN did a lousy job on the draft.

I'm optimistic, too. By pick #3 of the first round, already a player was drafted that SN didn't have going in Round One. I immediately switched to Rick Gosselin.

I agree with this statement. There are other, very recent recent graduates of BB University making personnel decisions at this time. I also expect this sends a message to those graduates, and perhaps they will start reaching a bit more for players they think are likely highly valued by the similar systems. Perhaps that is part of BB's intent. Expect to see other graduate's teams making reaches in the near future. BB is not a fool, and it wouldn't surprise me if BB performs a fundamental transformation in defense in the near future. The game is changing, and BB changes with it, empowering him to change the game.... if only a little ;)

I have thought this for a while now, while others try to catch up and replicate, BB is heading in a different direction.. it may be subtle or it may be a complete change. This is the first year in a long time that BB has had a lot of free time in Jan/Feb, I also suspect he is pissed for not making the playoffs... one thing I know for sure is that the Pats will not be close to the bottom in Red Zone D in '09.

That's interesting because he only allowed one sack last year in 600+ snaps.
