ProFootballTalk.com - Pats Looking To Get Out Of Round One?

Oh my goodness. I'm so disillusioned to think that rumors of trading up in the draft may have been a ruse.

If you can't trust a football coach to tell the truth leading up to the draft, then who CAN you trust?

Did Florio really say this......"we’re wondering whether coach Bill Belichick might be trying to spark a little fire under the fanny of Randy Moss, whose incredible talents from time to time need a lawnmower-style cord pulling in order to fully engage."

YES he did, what a moron!!

Trade up...trade down and out. Gotta luv the sports mediots. Issue so many predictions that all the possibilities are covered. Multiply by 32 teams and each mediot is guaranteed to ba able to cite their prescience to some audience.

Well, in all fairness, for some undetermined reason that no one at PFT can fathom, Moss' production last year was a LOT lower than in 2007.

Its not that farfetched. With all those teams needing receivers, that'd be a half step down, gaining likely a 2nd round pick for next year- and at that point, its only another half step to be out of the round completely. If BB could net a couple 2010 picks for minimal steps down, he'd do it. Perpetual disclaimer: It all depend who's around at 23.

And oddly while the JAGS offered less than the old trade chart to trade out of the 8 hole last year it annoys the crap out of some people to think BB would try to pull off his own value move at parameters they set at their expense the following year...

When was the last time Mort or anyone at ESPN had a clue what BB was thinking? Mort's old school connections can devine who we talk to, why generally remains a wild assed guess unless we want a rumor started...

Anyone who thinks Moss didn't have some 'concentration issues' after Brady went down didn't bother watching the games. It wasn't just Moss, but it got bad enough that BB publicly fired a shot across the bow after the Chargers game.

I hope we don't. There is some good talent in the first round.

I can't see that trading out of the first round being feasible unless it included a player. The Pats can't afford to acquire more picks this year (they aren't keeping 11 rookies, nevermind 12 or 13) so they won't trade for multiple picks this year. I guess it is possible that they trade it for next year's #1 and a high pick this year like a low 2, but I see that as unlikely since they could potentially trade a second rounder to get a first next year. Also, this draft is supposed to have upwards to 40 players with first round grades (many years it doesn't reach 15). I don't see the Pats passing up on a first round grade player at 23 unless it was a great deal for them.

I am guessing the Pats are just checking out contingency plans to see if someone will give up the farm for their pick. Most first round trades start negotiations before the draft happen and are executed if the target player for the team trading for the pick is available.

The only thing sport journos can be certain of is that the Patriots will be at the draft. :D

Hmmm... Let me think about that one??? *cross his arms, putting his hand to his chin and looks up slightly*... Let me get back to you... that will take some research:D

I watch every game most at least twice and he certainly had a few drops but to say it was something about his effort is wrong because I watched a player he stepped up his effort in run blocking and leadership to make sure this team didn't cave in the loss of Brady.

I THINK IT WOULD BE NATURAL FOR ANY RECIEVER TO DROP A FEW MORE PASSES IF THEY WERE BEING THROWN FROM SOMEONE LEARNING ON THE JOB COMPARED TO ONE OF THE BEST THERE EVER WAS.

This just in... I'm hearing, in my head, that the Patriots and Saints are considering a move. While Peter King thought the move involved the Patriots going up and the Saints moving down, the option of the Patriots handing the pick over to the Saints for their 2010 first round pick is also out there. The condition of the trade is that the Saints targeted player being there (Cushing - targeted by Miami, Beanie Wells - Ravens/Colts).

Moving out of the first round for the Saints one next year is interesting...what he doesn't have enough later picks already?

If he goes out of the first I think there would be something else to it.......

yeah that.. and Cassel wasnt throwing a very competent long ball. I thought Moss always tried hard.. looked that way to me.

I have a very hard time believing anything any GM and/or coach has reportedly said or has directly said about the draft and potential trades. The NFL is a highly competitive dog eat dog business where the only goal is to win. Posturing, planting false information and being downright sneaky to gain any advantage is probably as common as a three leaf clover. Coupled with a media that will say anything in the hope that it may be proven correct and it becomes impossible to predict anything based on what we hear.

"I play when I wanna play", let's just pretend that never happened.

The idea that Belichick would draft a player to send a message is stupid, but let's be real.

Belichick PUBLICLY talked about his players needing to step it up. It happened. Whether people like to admit it or not, the focus wasn't where it needed to be.

yeah I remember that comment which was before he got here and I am confident he wants to play for us and wants to play to win a ring and nothing I saw last year looked like lack of effort or want in fact just the opposite. The guy gave everything he had to a team that lost the best QB and anyone who saw any different is an idiot.
