Peppers unlikely to be traded | CharlotteObserver.com
Barring a dramatic change, Julius Peppers isn't going anywhere.

With draft day Saturday, Peppers, a Pro Bowl defensive end, is still a member of the Carolina Panthers, albeit as a franchise free agent.

No trade is in sight and the team is moving forward with plans that he'll be back next season.

Neither the New England Patriots nor the Philadelphia Eagles, two teams Peppers was interested in playing for, have shown a willingness to surrender the mega-trade package necessary to acquire him from Carolina and give him a top-market contract.

Since Peppers hasn't signed the tender offer he received from the Panthers when they franchised him, they can't trade him under rules of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement.

By not signing the tender before the draft, Peppers was able to make sure the Panthers didn't try to trade him to a team for which he did not want to play.

So much for that.

thx B.O.R.

I love the Jackson move. Until Peppers signs, nothing happens with him.

I would feel horrible, as Big Sey is a vital part of our defense.

Agreed. Everything could go right in drafting and coaching Jackson, and he still might wind up being less effective than Seymour.

I trust they know more than me.End of story.

I'd rather have a impact LB like Curry instead of Jackson. I look at this way, how much of an impact can DE in a 3-4 have without quality LB's backing him up? DE's in a 3-4 are not expected to get sacks, but tie up blockers in order for OLB's to get after the QB/RB. The Pats have had the best D-line since 2004 but average LB's at best since then. From 2005-2009 the Pats have had major issues with depth and impact players at the LB position. But who knows, maybe the Pats feel Curry doesn't fit their scheme and believe that someone that fits their scheme can be had in the 2nd or 3rd round. In the end, I would rather have the Pats trade up for potential stud at LT than Tyson Jackson who will probably not make much of an impact until the following season. I look at this draft as players that can make an impact now, rather than looking towards the future. In fact, the window isn't going to open for ever.

Regarding Peppers, just because the Pats don't trade for him on Saturday means he can't be had. I believe I read it in the Charlotte Observer, but it said that Peppers won't sign the tender because he's afraid the Panthers would trade him to a team that he doesn't want to play for. Also, even if Peppers signed the tag, I believe the Pats would want to hold on to their draft choices this season and try to deal for Peppers around May or June. I still don't think the Panthers can keep him and they already freaked out by signing Jake Delhomme to a 40 million dollar deal. The Panthers are going to have do a couple more of those extentions or cut a few more players. If Peppers really wants out, he will get traded if he continues to hold out.

i dont like it and pepper is not better then richard seymour with the pats hes aked to play the run first and hold off OT for the LB if richard seymour was in a 4-3 as a DT and was asked to just passrush he would lead all DT in sacks if not the whole NFL hes a much better player then pepper

Just out of curiosity, why do you feel that they 'can't keep him?' And why are they going to have to 'cut some players?' For what specific reason?

Since the important waves of FA are over, how else can they improve their team besides the draft? Especially by getting rid of their best player? Who else do you see them targeting or needing to sign?

They had more space than we did, even before extending Delhomme, which I believe will free up approx. 3 million more. I believe they'll be about 10 million under the cap. They just shored up the O line by finally signing Gross, have the best rushing attack in football, have Mohammed and Smith on the outside, and just extended their franchise QB, who they have a much better record when playing. They seem pretty set on offense to me. On defense, they have arguably the best 4-3 DE in the game on the line, young stud Jon Beason as one of their LB's, and just extended one of their better CB's in Chris Gamble. They obviously have a hole or 2 to address, like most teams, but did have the 2nd overall seed in the NFC. If not for a major upset by a double-digit underdog in AZ, they probably at the very least, go to the SB.

Whatever needs they may have should be addressed via the draft, and even then, they could still make a couple plays in FA--although I really don't see who is left that they could use. They have plenty of money to sign their rookie pool players from the draft, and even then, could have plenty of money left over. (7-8 million)

I don't know if he'll come here or not, although it seems very unlikely. But I can't really see why some people still think at the end of April, that they're so cap strapped. I'm just asking, in your opinion, what else do you feel needs to be done? More importantly, how can they do this, cut their best player, and still improve their team?

I think Peppers expected a bigger play for him, and when that didn't happen, he became somewhat stuck. The best thing for him to do now, is to accept the 17 mill guaranteed this yr--and then get another 25-30 million guaranteed on the open market next yr, where the uncapped yr could possibly get him even more. That's somewhere around 45 mill guaranteed over 2 yrs. IMO--he signs the tender when he's certain Carolina won't trade him, probably over the summer, or possibly sooner--if they can agree not to tag him next yr. This way he makes the most guaranteed money possible, even more than Haynesworth over his first 2-3 yrs, and also gets his wish, being able to leave Carolina after this season, also demanding the most attention during FA next yr.

Why would Carolina trade for Seymour? He'd be a 4-3 DT, presumably, and it wouldn't really play to his strengths.

That would be a horrible move considering Peppers is not a 3-4 DE and Seymour is. How a lot of people here don't understand that is beyond me...

In fact, the window isn't going to open for ever.

The Patriots do not believe in the concept of a window. They are NOT going to mortgage the future to win in the present.

Peppers won't sign the tender because he's afraid the Panthers would trade him to a team that he doesn't want to play for.

Only if that team's willing to cough up draft picks plus $17M for one year. And if he wants to be a Patriot, BB pretty much said "Sign the #@%ing tender."

I don't much care for Peppers. But, on your other point: If Bill Belichick believed that Richard Seymour were the best pass rusher in the NFL, he would not have pulled Seymour on third downs during much of last season.

We don't know the whole story. We don't know how Seymour has responded to his knee injuries over the years. What we do know is that it is what it is.

I would NEVER trade Seymour for Peppers in a 3-4

Seymour will likely be gone next year anyways. But having him start this year isn't a bad thing if you have Jackson, as Warren didn't start much of his rookie year and ended up stepping in as a dominant player in his second. 5-technique DE takes time to learn, so Jackson wouldn't be capable of playing immediately.

If the Pats got Tyson Jackson, they might follow this up by

trading Seymour to Kansas City for a 2010 draft pick.

Why are so many fans eager to get rid of Seymour? I don't get it.
