From Tim Kawakami (the guy who go into the famous videotaped argument with the Raiders' front office staff) with of the San Jose Mercury News:

The Raiders are so secretive that the rumor mill sort of works against them–I don’t think Al Davis is ever in the mood to spread flash or any information, so if anything major hits the chatter box, there’s usually something to it.

So I took it seriously when I heard ESPN’s Chris Mortensen report on “SportsCenter” that the Raiders are shopping DE Derrick Burgess–their only proven pass rusher, in a contract year–and that the Eagles and Patriots may be interested.

Al D. isn’t a big Mort fan, but if you toss out Mort’s reporting on any major NFL subject you’re crazy. He’s not always 100% right, but he’s more tapped in than anybody.

And, if history is any guide, when you start hearing about the Raiders shopping vets, whatever the tone of the denials (or the silence), it usually eventually leads to a departure.

So we’ll see on Burgess. I’m thinking that if the Patriots want a Raiders veteran who used to be a star, maybe Al had better hesitate on that one, judging from the last deal he made with Belichick.

My two further questions:

1) What would Burgess be worth? He’d demand a new contract, I’m sure, he hasn’t had a great year since 2005, he’s not young (turns 31 this summer) and was hurt and recorded only 3.5 sacks in 2008.

If future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez was worth a 2010 No. 2 pick moving from KC to Atlanta, I’d figure Burgess, slightly younger at much more important position but no HOF-er, would be worth something similar.
I’d say a mid-to-late No. 2 or early No. 3 this year. Might be wrong, but that’s what I’d say.

2) I wonder if the thoughts of moving Burgess are predicated on the Raiders landing a quality DE at No. 7 (LSU’s Tyson Jackson?) or maybe even the second round (SJSU’s Jarron Gilbert comes to mind).

Now if the Raiders don’t move Burgess, they obviously could take a WR, and have been attached to a WR with their top pick for a while. I have Jeremy Maclin going to Oakland for a few weeks now, and I still think he’s the most likely option.

But what about super-fast Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey?

I'm cool off burgess.

To play what position? Hasn't he been a 4-3 DE with his hand down his entire career?

So hasn't Peppers but it hasn't stopped all the 3-4 OLB talk about him. McGinest was a 4-3 DE for most of his career uuntil the Pats switch to the 3-4 part time in 2003 and fulltime in 2004. I don't know if Burgess can make the transition, but that is where he would play.

Are the Pat's going to be rumored to be involved in every trade this weekend? :D
It just seems like a trend is developing here. Secondly, I don't trust ANYTHING REPORTED by ESPN. If this is reported by another MORE CREDIBLE network, I'll start to take it seriously.

Burgess might be more suited to 3-4 DE than Peppers. Peppers is a more athletic, a far better pass rusher... but Burgess has always been more stout against the run. I think he'd be better at setting the edge. Watch the 2003 Super Bowl - the Patriots run at an over-rushing Peppers far too often. That's not a 3-4 OLB.

And he won't cost nearly as much.

31 year old coming off an injury-plagued, 2.5 sack season for a second round pick? Pass...

He's a 30 year old defensive end (in his prime), four years ago he had 16 sacks, three years ago he had 11 sacks, two years ago 8 and last year four. He has not suffered a major injury (I believe). Although He has not been as good the last two years as the previouse two, I think he will be a VERY good player for the pats. We have seen this before with players from the Raiders: Moss, L Jordan. Im excited if we can get him.

Why bother..........

Yeah, and there was that WR...oh wait, nevermind. Tried to reboot Starks career thinking it was just the desert that didn't agree with him. Sometimes they are just fading. BTW Lamont missed half the season and produced the kind of numbers Maroney gets lambasted for here... 16,11, 8, 4...do I sense a trend? If he wasn't injured that's really scary.

They can't all come here. We can't sign every player rumored to be on the market.

Why not just pass and take Gilbert with a 2nd rd pick?

I say pass. unless they take a 3rd for him.

I think it's more likely that this is a ploy to drop the asking price for Peppers in a trade and for a contract.. or maybe the opposite..... Peppers trade is stalled and this is plan B.

Ahhhh heck! who knows... is it saturday at 4pm yet?

The difference is that Jordan was a trash-heap pick-up who was nothing more than a committee back and Maroney was a 1st rounder expected to be a workhorse super-stud and home-run hitter, an aspect the Patriots' running game never had.

I like Burgess quite a bit, but it all depends on a) what the raiders want and b) what kind of contract he'd want. If the raiders want more than a third rounder, I'd definitely move on.

Moss TD's 13, 8, 3....we get him, then 23....
Burgess led the league in sacks and was a probowler two strait years, hes 31 now. Worth a look, and im willing to bet hes a patriot tommoro.

Exactly, he's trending down. No reason to give up a 2nd round pick if a guy is trending down that badly. Now if we have a really successful first 4 rounds, then maybe I'd give up a 5th for him but anything more than that is silly. We need to get younger on defense, not older.

I would pass on Burgess. However I would listen if Oakland is talking about Huff.

There ya go. I was high on Huff coming out of the draft, don't think he's doing too much out there though, so it's hard to tell if it's him or the wrong scheme, etc
