King: Pats explore moving up

Or, maybe one of the LT prospects.

There's extensive discussion of this rumor on the draft board:

I don't think Orapko is a good fit at 3-4 OLB for the Pats, but if BB thought differently then it would make sense. But I think that Aaron Curry, BJ Raji, Andre Smith and Michael Crabtree could all be targets, or possibly Tyson Jackson. Either way, at #8 BB would be guaranteed to choose between some of these guys.

Interestingly, BB talked in his press conference last week about the "old days" of trading picks in advance of the draft and how he was comfortable with it, but most teams weren't.

If Curry were there at 7 or later, I'd do whatever it takes to get him.

I like Raji OK, but I don't think he has as much value to us since we have Wilfork, though I generally will defer to Mayoclinic who knows much more about these prospects than me. I just feel that since we can control Wilfork w the tag next year and the 2010 draft promises to be a deep one at DL, and even 3-4 DL, that I don't see the value in making a move right now for a 3-4 NT.

If Jenkins reaches 15 or so, I'd try and trade up for him.

I think no doubt he is looking at Curry who is expected to drop down a bit since he is not excel at rushing the passer, but in this system hopefully that can change, but if you ask me I think Curry is the main target here and by far the best overall LB in the draft.

Just what I've been saying all along. Better to bundle a couple of picks and move up.

Could also be looking and moving up to get a shot at Everette Brown as Seymours successor in 2010

Seymour is all but gone next season unless he has an incredible season this year and the team feels it must do all it takes to keep him, anything less than incredible nd I think the team will feel the need to spend big bucks elsewhere in 2010.

Brown may be the best DE in this draft

A 256 lb replacement for Seymour?

Brown would be a LB in a 3-4...

Crabtree or Curry maybe, but would Curry really be a "surprise"? The big surprise would be Sanchez, but wtf would we do with him?

Trade him. Trade Sanchez and #89 (or even #58) to Washington for #13 and a 2010 1st round pick. Then take Malcolm Jenkins at 13.

I could see the rationale of that. We've seen in the past how quickly an OL can degrade - and we've also seen Light get beat, somewhat routinely, by speed rushers.

We also know that it would be a waste for the Pats to draft 11 guys - and we also know that at a certain point, it makes less sense to leverage 2nd round draft choices for higher picks in next year's draft and more sense to use them on a sure fire "player" than multiple higher risk picks.

We also know that there's a lot of teams looking to trade down in this draft - therefore there might be more value to be had in trading UP this year.

That being said, this is the time of year for misinformation - I tend not to trust much of what I hear - though if BB is truly engaged in conversations to move up, that IS likely to leak out if true.

PFW is talking about the feasibility of such a draft and trade deal rumor for Sanchez. Problem is Washington gets no 1st round compensation in it's rookie cap because they didn't draft in the first. Makes it tough to get Sanchez signed or makes it impossible to sign any other picks...

When SD and NY did their deal each had drafted a first and were trading those. Each still had a rookie pool # based on drafting a top 3 first.

Would the pats take advantage of snyder's need for a big name qb and draft sanchez and try to get landry and a high pick :)

The #23, and the #47, are not enough to jump 15 spaces, into the top 10. It's too far a drop to #23, from #8 for the Jags, and too little compensation regardless. The generic chart shows a 640 point difference between 8 & 23, with the #47 pick being worth 430. Maybe with the 560 point #34 pick, we could wiggle our way into #8, but who wants to give up the #34? I certainly don't. I think the #34 is going to be where a handfull of first round talents slide. Plus, #34 is where teams will be willing to move a 2010 1st rounder for.

BTW, picks 8-12 is where I would think teams would want to be in this draft, with the parity in talent at the top.

Mike Mayock has said that the old draft value chart is obsolete as far as the top 10 is concerned. According to the chart, #8 is worth 1400 points. Last year Jacksonville traded up to #8 by giving 1130 points worth of value according to the chart (26 + 71 + 89 + 125). 23 + 47 would be worth 1190 points, so we would be giving Jacksonville more for #8 than they gave for the #8 pick last year.

Exactly, perfectly explained. As far this rumor goes, King speculates Tyson Jackson or more likely an offensive player but I think it will ultimately be one of these two: Aaron Curry if he slides and more likely Malcolm Jenkins, both in my estimation are two of the four safest picks in this draft along w/Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith. Two other options could be BJ Raji or Andre Smith. But if King is hearing it's an offensive player I think it's more likely a defensive player.

I think it's one of 6 guys: Curry > Raji on defense, with Tyson Jackson and Malcolm Jenkins as alternatives. Or Andre Smith or Michael Crabtree on offense.

The only reason I don't see Jenkins as likely is that I think he will be available at #14 and we could trade up with NO for him more cheaply, using #23 and #58. But he's be a safe pick.

Waiting for the "Why does'nt NE give Carolina 23 and 34 for Peppers" debate coming soon to this thread ....

Aside from the salary cap issue (which is probably insurmountable), I wouldn't put it past BB to trade 23 + 47 to Jax and draft Aaron Curry, and then trade 34 + 89 to Carolina for Peppers, giving us an LB corps of Peppers-Curry-Mayo-Thomas. Then draft a safety at 58. That would certainly throw the league into an uproar. The Commish would have to find an excuse to take away another 1st round pick for doing something which must obviously be illegal. :D

Maybe BB shocks us and trades up to take Kwonshon Moreno and trades Maroney for a 3rd rounder in 2010 ;)
