Let's Add Two To The Secondary

Unless we get Jenkins, my choice would be to draft two safeties. My choices are Will Moore and Rashad Johnson. BTW, Gosselin has Johnson as the best kick coverage guy in the draft.

I'm fine at corner with Bodden, Hobbs, and Springs for 2009 (with Wheatley and Wilhite as the injury replacements and dime back).

For 2010, we're fine at corner with no CBA with Hobbs, Springs, Wheatley, Wilhite and 2010 free agents.

For 2010 with a CBA, we would need a couple of free agent corner additions as we do every year, and perhaps a draft choice.

I like S Smith as a hybrid S/CB. 2 in the secondary would be fine with me.

I don't think we need to add 2 players to the secondary, but we can add up to 2 if the right players fall. I think we are fine for 2009 at CB with Bodden/Hobbs/Springs/Wheatley/Wilhite. We have Meriweather/Sanders/TWilliams at safety, which is actually an improvement over 2008. I see us probably carrying 9 DBs (possibly a 10th with STs, but it will be hard to find the roster space).

I would ideally like to see a future starting S opposite Meriweather drafted. Since it is unclear whether Meriweather will stay at SS or FS (or even what that means in BB's system), there are a lot of options as to the type of player that might complement Meriweather: an in the box guy like William Moore, Patrick Chung or Chip Vaughn; a hydrid SS/FS like Louis Delmas; or a more mobile FS/CB hybrid like Malcolm Jenkins and Sean Smith. All are possibilties. It's possible that BB could draft 2 of those options, but there are other needs and it would depend on how the value fell.

From what I've read Vaughn would be a better cover guy than a run stuffer, therefore I would classify him similar to Delmas.

Really? Here's 2 profiles on Vaughn.

First, from NFLdraftscout:

Positives: Looks the part. Rare size and upper-body development for the position. Aggressive defender that attacks in run support. Reliable open-field tackler. Heavy hitter that can separate the ballcarrier from the ball, resulting in forced fumbles and passes broken up. Appears to have at least adequate straight-line speed, good balance and a low backpedal. Good leaping ability to battle for the ball. Has developed a reputation for game-changing plays over his career. Came to Wake Forest as a wide receiver and is still an ascending player.

Negatives: Better in run support than against the pass. Questionable instincts. A step slow in recognizing the action and has a hitch in his turn. May lack the agility to mirror routes. Better facing the quarterback. Loses track of the ball and has only marginal hand-eye coordination for the interception. Surrounded by a great deal of talent at Wake Forest.

Second, from NFLdraftcountdown:

Strengths:
Terrific size and bulk...Superb tackler...Real tough and physical...Will deliver the big hit...Very active and aggressive...Good range...Does a fantastic job against the run...Smart and instinctive...Very productive.

Weaknesses:
Just average speed...Doesn't have great hands or ball skills...Gets too high in his backpedal...Hips aren't real fluid...Will struggle to match up with wideouts in man coverage...Isn't very quick...A little inconsistent.

Notes:
First name is "Clarence"...Actually arrived at Wake Forest as a wide receiver...Saw extensive action as a backup early in his career before taking over a starting job in 2007...Led the Demon Deacons in tackles as a junior...A blue-collar prospect who certainly isn't flashy but has adequate physical tools and even better intangibles...An in-the-box run supporter whose best fit at the next level will be as a strong safety.

Sounds more like Moore and Chung than Delmas to me.

I'd like to see three DB's taken. These have to be hybrid players that can cover and tackle. Safeties that can play man coverage is prefferred. Take a CB late that they can stick on the Prctice Squad and develop. They have the draft picks to do.

Well just from the combine alone I wouldn't classify speed as Vaughn's weakness.

And going by Sporting News Draft Guide it's just the opposite.

Strengths: "Shows quick, compact backpedal...shows sideline-to-sideline range in deep pass coverage."

Weaknesses: "Does not fly upfield in run support. Struggles to move through traffic Launches at ballcarriers looking to make big hits, causing him to miss some tackles."

Bottom Line: "Vaughn's failure to standout in run support is a big concern. However, he shows the athleticism and instincts to be effective in pass coverage."

I'm fine with drafting 2 safeties, but I don't think you draft the second one before the 5th or so, if you're going to draft one in the first or the second.

If they are looking for a second safety in this draft, they could do far worse than picking Otis Wiley in the sixth or seventh. Hell, Wiley might go undrafted after being injured most of the offseason.

He never really put it all together at Michigan State but he has all the tools necessary to become a really nice SS as a pro.
