Jason Williams, LB
Joe Burnett, CB

Zach Potter, DE
Kevin Huber, P
Thomas Morstead, P

Actually, the more I look at it, the more I hate it. It's as bad as the Sporting News drafts. Matthews and Butler aren't horrible picks (not my choices though), but after that it totally falls apart. Rashad Johnson and Cody Brown are not good value at 47 and 58 IMHO. And the 2nd day is garbage.

Consider the players he has going undrafted or after 200 who would make up a quality draft:

Devin Moore, RB (214)
Mike Wallace (208) or Austin Collie (206), WR
Chris Baker (238) or Terrance Knighton (210), DT
Zach Potter, 3-4 DE (UDFA)
Jason Williams, LB (UDFA)
Joe Burnet, CB (UDFA)
Kevin Huber or Thomas Morstead, P (UDFA)

I'd be pretty darn happy with that group as my entire day 2 draft. Much happier than with what McShay had us getting.

How in the world does he have Rey Maualuga falling to the Titans at 30 ? C'mon Todd, you're better than this............

I expect Maualuga to go before #30 but there's many viable opinions saying that he won't; Mike Lombardi, for example, has him out of the first round.

Does he honestly think that the Pats are going to draft a LONG SNAPPER in the 6th round (and with the Tom Brady slot)???

Southerland is a decent FB.

You are right, this draft would be putrid!!

You gotta cut folks doing these mocks some slack after the third round. Anything after that is even more of a crapshoot than the already crapshootastic process of one round mocks.

I could live with those two first round though.

I'm fine w/ the 1st two rounds if you get rid of both LB picks. I do like Johnie Knox in the 5th as a wr/ kr.

We will take a lineman or two on the new Day 1. One on each side of the ball.
I wouldn't be shocked if we take 2 ol. I'm a charter member of the Gerald Cadogan Fan Club. I'd be thrilled with him at 3a.

What amazes me is that Jason Williams could go undrafted in a McShay mock draft.

Clearly, he is shooting up draft boards, and there's no way in hell he goes undrafted, let alone fall past the fourth round (I see him going mid-third).

I'm seriously getting tired of hearing Clay Matthews and the Patriots in the same sentence. I'm telling you, Clay Matthews is the next Bobby Carpenter. He hardly played at USC and this guy is getting the undeserved hype. I don't care that Belichick coached his dad, Clay Matthews will not be a Patriots just like Carpenter was not a Patriot. Darius Butler is the only good pick out of McShay's draft.

Maualuga's pro day pretty much saved him from being a sure second round pick. However, I still think there's a chance he may slip into the second round. That is where I would love the Pats to steal him at #34.

Butler and Mathews. I cringe every time "one" of their names are mentioned as 23 or 34. And worse yet "they are both our picks 23 and 34."

Butler to me is athletic, fast, a pretty good prospect. Malcolm Jenkins is a superior CB that has faster acceleration with much more fluid hips who has played at a big time program. Jenkins is the only CB that earns first round consideration imo. I like 4 safeties and Alphonso Smith better than I like Butler.

To me, Mathews is an upside player. Didn't start enough, didn't have big time production and may of benefited imo by having played with a bunch of college All-Stars. Excellent specials teams player though. If they are going to go with someone with "limited" experience and upside, I'd much rather go have them take Barwin who's ceiling is cathedral compared to Mathews. Versatility is the key and Barwin fits the bill.

I'm not saying go draft Barwin at 23. Truthfully I like a couple of other players better at that slot. But I love him at 34.

I pretty much agree with what you said word for word. I'm not sure about Alphonso Smith vs. Butler, but I certainly like Jenkins, Delmas, William Moore and Sean Smith better as DB candidates.

I think Matthews is a nice player who is getting way overhyped and who doesn't have a clear position for the Pats. He moves nicely and is a good athlete, but I just don't see enough to warrant him at 23 or 34.

I am completely comfortable with the Pats taking Butler. He has quick twitch, ball skills and speed. Drafting Butler upgrades our secondary.

Second I could see ReyMal falling into the second round. Two down LBers are not worthy of first round grades.

Sure Butler has some upside but I don't put too much stock into quick twitch muscle fibers. I'm assuming your referring to his insane vertical of 43 inches and his 11ft long jump? If thats a big part of the criteria to draft him then I'd rather wait until the 3rd round and draft the other CB out of Ohio State, Donald Washington.

Asante Samuel had half of the measureables coming out of college of Butler and he did alright for himself and the Pats. At the time I didn't think too much into the drafting of Samuel. I pretty much thought he had practice squad written all over him. Imo it all comes down to coaching, systems and instinct. Premier athleltic ability is a huge plus but not a requirement in making a great player. I'm not comparing Butler to Samuel, I'm just using him as an example. I could bring up at least 20 if I had more time.

Again. if I was going to grab a CB in the 1st it would be Jenkins with a tradeup.

Samuel was, and remains, a quick twitch CB. He was also an incredibly good gambler which may be why BB let him leave via FA.

I don't hate this draft as much as you do. I don't like Mathews at 23 for the Pats, but I do like Butler at 34. Rashad Johnson is a guy I think is a boom or bust and not based on physical ability, but if he be the same type of cerebral player in the NFL as he was in college. I could see him being a poor man's Ed Reed in a best case scenario and an undersized washout in a worst case scenario. I don't like Brown as our pass rushing OLB, I'd hope we could do better. Cadogan intrigues me as a RT prospect, so I am fine with him but neither Peerman (great speed, but fumbles and small hands worry me) or Beckwith are high on my list. I like Knox's speed and he showed good hands at the combine, I'd be happy with him there. The last few picks make quite a bit of sense as LS and FB are two places where a late round guy has a great shot to make this team. Overall the only two pics, I feel are truly good value are Butler and Knox.

I like your undrafted or past 200 list better than McShay's second day because Wallace and especially Williams more than any of our picks in rounds 3-7.

It seems like people are jumping on the Malcom Jenkins bandwagon. Im just curious as to why? He played in a weak passing conference in the Big 10 and his defense that he played on was a college scheme defense. He played mainly man cover 2. The pats play more cover 2 zone schemes; which is similar to what UCON Played thus the pats are interested in Butler who is comfortable in zone coverages.

I never focused on him when I watched Ohio State so I can't address the performance part of your question. His measurables are okay by me. I did find it interesting that BB had him into Gillette for a visit. He was originally projected to Top 10 status by a consensus of pundits/draftniks, that BB even took a closer look says he sees a role for the kid. IBBIT. :confused2:

Matthews, Barwin and Butler seem to be constants in Patriot mock picks. They seem to be brought up so often that I have grown to accept the likelihood of their selection after wavering dissent early on. To get Butler and Matthews is almost exciting because I assumed it would only be one or the other.

Wouldn't complain if the Pats landed Cody Brown, Cadogan, and Knox. All three would make for interesting competition over the next two years and provide solid "roster fortification" for the future. Only complaint: no tight end (Nelson please).

I always thought that McShay was better than Kiper, but now im realizing that they are both the same!! Thats BSPN for ya!!
