The National Football Post | Notes From Lombardi: Mock Draft

Some observations:

He predicts a run on tackles and QBs in the top ten: 4 OTs and 3 QBs selected.

Has the pats taking Vontae Davis. I don't see it. Also has the Dolphins getting English at 25.

No Rey Maualuga in the first round. Interesting. Cushing goes right before 23 to the Vikings.

Has the Jets taking a TE at 17 (BB gets really really jealous).

Has the Broncos taking 2 DL Raji and Jackson, which would be a coup for them.

Has the Browns taking Crabtree. I don't see it, I expect them to go defense or QB.

Moreno falls to the Colts at 27.

Jarron Gilbert to the Steelers at 32. I'd like to see him last to 34, but it would also mean we could probably get the top interior offensive lineman in the draft at 34. No guards or centers go in the first round.

Lombardi has Moreno going 27th.
Nawrocki of PFW has him going 4th.

Are there two Knowshon Morenos out there?

Denver fans should be very happy with Raji and Jackson, what a steal for them.

I'm still hoping BB makes a move to #13 or #14 (all three second rounders) to steal Jackson out from under McDaniels nose.

#13 or #14 = DE Jackson
#23 CB Butler
#89 OLB/ILB Kruger
#97 FS Bruton

I think that is in part due to the depth of this draft.....probably also in part how they rate the top 3 RBs

I think Lombardi is correct about the OT's and QB's - I see all 4 top OT's and all 3 top QB's being gone by 13 at the latest. I also think 2-3 WRs could go by then.

I think Raji falling to Denver at 12 is quite possible. Tysoh Jackson would have to get past San Diego, who could choose between him, Malcolm Jenkins, Rey Maualuga and Knowshon Moreno.

Out of curiousity, why would you think the Chiefs wouldn't draft Raji?

They might, and it wouldn't be a bad move. My thoughts why they won't are (1) Raji's character concerns, which are much bigger at #3 bonus money, and (2) the amount of money they invested last year in Glenn Dorsey. But I suppose it's possible.

Dorsey and Raji in a 4-3 could compete with Minnesota for strongest interior line. Of course I expect them to go 3-4, but I can't help but remember when the Pats didn't even bother trying to run on the Vikings. Add some pass rush to that and it's a strong foundation for a top defense. Interesting idea.

It's a very interesting concept. But Kevin Williams is 6'6" compared to Glenn Dorsey at 6'2", and Pat Williams was not a top 5 pick. It's a lot of money to spend on the interior line. Not impossible, or even a bad idea - but very expensive.

Well, it's less money, but the fit's the same in New England with the 3 D-linemen already there, and in Minnesota with the two mountains in the middle. I guess the question would become whether or not K.C. thought Dorsey could play DE in the 3-4 and move about in "hybrid" formations.

I would think that a D-line with Raji and Dorsey, combined with having Thomas and Vrabel for linebackers, would be a good start for Pioli's first solo season. Combine that with Cassel Throwing to Bowe, Engram and Gonzalez, and Johnson running the ball when he's not abusing women, and K.C. could show some real improvement even if it doesn't translate to wins immediately.

On the other hand, if the Chiefs think Dorsey can hold up at NT, then putting Curry next to Thomas and Vrabel also makes a hell of a lot of sense, as Curry could learn from two of the very best in the game. To me, the K.C. pick really comes down to 2 things:

1.) Do the Chiefs think Cassel is the long term answer?

2.) Do the Chiefs think Dorsey can play NT?

If the answer to question #1 is no, look for them to draft Sanchez and let him sit for a year to learn the game. If the answer is yes, look for them to decide between Curry and Raji based upon question #2.

Of course, since I think I've got a feel for the K.C. situation, they'll trade out of the pick or draft a wide receiver.....

Vontae Davis is a good player, but I don't see the Patriots getting anywhere near him due to his negative character issues.

New England Patriots: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois — The Patriots would love a rusher, but with their age in the secondary, it might be hard to pass this talented athlete.

"Age in the secondary"? Really? :disagreement:

I am hoping we grab either Rey Maualuga, Larry English, or Robert Ayers.

Some days Mike Lombardi is a disciple of BB who really has a bead on what Bill thinks. Other days he's Mike that guy the Raiders fired who hasn't had an NFL job since. Today was a Raider day. Next week might be a BB day. Like Mayock he may have a little birdie chirping in his earpiece so he appears to be genius...

Nice.

Right now I'm kind of focused on 6 first day guys (in approximate descending order of interest):

- Malcolm Jenkins, CB/S
- Connor Barwin, OLB
- William Beatty, OT
- Louis Delmas, S
- Jarren Gilbert, DE
- Donald Brown, RB

I really would like as many of those 6 guys as possible.
