Mayock on OLB's for the Pats

I'm plenty happy with Meriweather and Welker.

Griffin has been better than Meriweather so far... and we didnt trade that second first rounder for Wes, we traded a second and seventh for him. That traded pick (to SF) did eventually land us Mayo in '08 though.

not so crazy after all eh' boys? :)
Oh you're still quite crazy, but Woodley was a good pick-up for Pittsburgh...right where I had him valued. :D Meriweather is coming along okay, I've not written him off yet. The 28th pick traded to SF netted Moss, Mayo, and Crable. We can ignore the Welker trade because that pick was too late to draft Woodley, so just using the two firsts: NE got Meriweather, Moss, Mayo, and Crable vs Woodley and Griffin. I'm content.

We wanted a safety badly. I wanted Griffin also, with Nelson as a fine second choice. Beason was the linebacker of choice by many, Posluszny by me. However, both Griffin and Nelson were gone, so Meriweather was a fine choice, once Belichick vouched for there being no character issues. Meriweather was the last of the top safeties.

Woodley may have been you binky, but he was much lower on most team boards. Belichick could have drafted a linebacker at 28, especially with the second already gone for Welker. Instead he ended up with Moss, Mayo and Crable for the 28th pick. Belichick could have taken Woodley half a round early and gotten a fine LB. Even with 100% hindsight, I like his results.

Good posting.

I remember the year Woodley came out. He was my binky. I desperately wanted the Pats to take him and Mike Griffin with their two first rounders that season. We ended up drafting Meriweather and trading the other pick (I think).

Some on this forum thought I was crazy for wanting to take Woodley in the first round.... not so crazy after all eh' boys? :)

I too wanted Griffin over Meriweather, and would still prefer him. But I was happy to get Meriweather at 24, and am still happy with him.

Woodley and David Harris would both have been solid picks at 28, but we did much better the way things worked out. And give Crable a chance. He may yet end up being special. It really depends how hard he is willing to work to get stronger and fill out his frame. The basics are there.

Speaking of Crable, does anyone know if any recent pics of him have surfaced, or news of him adding some weight to his lower body? Of all the things that are going to interest me going into camp, Crables physical appearence will be right there near the top of the list.

The only thing I've read was someone at a party last Fall reporting on the huge plate of pasta he was carrying. :woot:

Worry about the 7th if you must.

We got a 4th and a 1st for the 28th pick. For the fourth we got Moss. For the first we got the 7th pick of the next draft where we traded down and ended up with Mayo and Crable.

If Laurinitis or Maualuga arent available at 23 or Malcolm Jenkins isnt within reach to move up I pull the trigger on English at 23 no hesitation.

Sounds good to me

As am I, but I wanted the Patriots to draft him. Going into that Draft I wanted Meriweather and Woodley with 24 and 28, and thought David Harris was a strong possibility with 28 as well. However, I'm sure we're all happy with NE's eventual use of that second pick.

Getting back to Larry English. I've noticed a few board members referring to him as slow, and mentioning his forty time as a supposed cause for concern. From the tape I've seen the man isn't close to being slow at OLB, and has a good burst off the edge. Also, while his Combine forty time wasn't outstanding, it wasn't alarming either, and seems people are forgetting he posted a 4.62 at his Pro Day, which is a very good time for the position.

Yep. I like English too. My only question would be does BB want an OLB that badly. Else id look to take the BPA or an OT/OG in the first and get Barwin in the second

I wanted Meriweather ahead of Nelson myself (Griffin wasn't in the equation as he was a SS) and was delighted when we drafted him at #24. I was disappointed when we traded out of #28, but I'm more than happy with what we've ended up with from that trade. In fact I'm now glad we did.

My big board when #28 came up was the following:

1. Alan Branch, DE/DT - I really thought he was going to be the 2nd coming of Richard Seymour. My bad. One of my worst all time misses.
2. Joe Staley, OT
3. Lamarr Woodley, DE/OLB
4. Davis Harris, ILB

I was a bit disappointed when we traded out of #28, as no one at that time expected that SF's pick would end up being #7. Obviously, I'm ecstatic with how things turned out.

Mine was:
1. Robert Meacham, WR
2. Anthony Spencer, OLB
3. Ben Grubbs, G
4. David Harris, ILB
5. Josh Wilson, CB

I'm not sure who's is worse.

Ah yes I had Meachem going at #24.

Meriweather was my pick at #28.

Good to hear from you, Sebman, esp. so close to D-Day.

If the Pats had kept #28, I would've seriously considered RG/RT Justin Blalock, as well as Harris/Woodley/Staley. He would've solidified our right side at either position.

And I still don't get the love for Stomper. He wasn't even the best FS available - Eric Weddle was, and still is. If you are drafting a FS at #24 overall, he should have #24 overall ball skills. Stomper only has #24 overall kicking skills.

If I remember correctly, mine was:

1. Anthony Spencer
2. Lamarr Woodley
3. Joe Staley (still love the kid even with his problems in SF)
4. Jon Beason
5. David Harris
6. Chris Houston
