He's the guy who made listening to the group in the booth fun for me again after Cosell, and I'll always appreciate him for that.

He had definitely lost something off of his fastball, but he was still occasionally hilarious, intentionally or otherwise. What will become of EAs flagship Football Game franchise once he goes, I often wondered. The name "Madden" will always be an icon. I admire him for knowing when to retire. He had begun to slow down over the last few years. And even though he traveled in relative luxury on that tour bus (he had a fear of flying), all that time on the road must've gotten tiring.

Wow, I hate to hear that. I love listening to the guy, I would agree that he's lost a little over time - But his knowledge of the game and history of the game is unparalleled in my opinion.

Good for him that he gets to go out on his terms.

Some fond Thanksgiving memories always include his voice booming from the TV in the living room while sitting down with the family to eat dinner and one of the ladies in the family always had to have it turned down only to have my uncle coax one of us kids to sneak in only to crank it up again. He is an institution for football.

I love John Madden, and don't agree that he's lost much, if anything, in the last few years; his enthusiasm was always the best thing about him, and he still had that in bucket loads. Reading his quotes it definitely seems like he's retiring for all the right reasons, so good for him.

I totally agree that they need to replace him with another coach. He is an icon in the business with a .750 winning percentage as a coach (still the best ever I believe). I loved his early years with Pat Summerall and I wished Al Michaels had of worked with the younger Madden.
